Hello everybody! Well my stupid friend dropped my brand new 3G yesterday and it landed face down on the street. I even had the Agent 18 case on it but lo and behold, that thing popped right off! I mean the minuet the phone hit the ground, the case exploded! Well anyway, I can't have my baby be all scratched up after only 2 days of having her, so my question is does anyone know a good excuse to tell the Genius bar people that my phone is broken so I can get a newer, less scratched phone? Thx

I doubt it... You've dropped it and its scratched / busted....

Don't think they will buy any excuses!

The warranty doesn't cover accidental damage, so the warranty wouldn't help your situation. When you say does anyone know a good excuse to tell the Genius bar people that my phone is broken so I can get a newer, less scratched phone? are you implying that you'd like to lie to them to try to get a new phone? Why do you deserve a new phone? You damaged it, why is that Apple's problem? Do you have any morals?

Does the phone still work? Did the glass crack? If it's just a few scratches, you won't be able to get a new one unless you buy it yourself.

Even if its more than a few scratches - and the glass is cracked - its still the same answer...

fraud = good :(

search = better :rolleyes:

why delay the inevitable? if you are passing the phone around like a $10 hooker to all your friends, it is bound to show some wear and tear. who is dumber, your friend for dropping your phone, or you for giving him the opportunity?

hell, you will probably encounter more problems with the refurbs. (try searching for refurb problems)

The phone is not broken it still works, it is just cosmetic damage, and I am a freak about cosmetic damage. I have gone through the replacement process with my old iPhone and know how it works. What I was trying to say was does anyone know a "problem" that the Genius bar will accept and then give me a replacement phone?

Woah, easy there. Didn't know I stumbled into Sunday school...:rolleyes:
But anyway, my friend more or less took my iPhone rather than me giving it too him. So can anyone answer my original question?

That was my plan B, but I want to try the "problem with my phone way" way first. That way no restocking fee or activation fee.

Well I'm not really looking for an answer rather than an excuse. Like "my phone crashes" or "it gets really hot when charging" stuff like that. I just want to know which one sounds more believable. Any other suggestions?

i dont believe there is a genius playbook for what is a legit complaint for a return and what isnt, just think of something that they can not prove wrong right in front of you.

I can't believe you can actually come to a forum asking people to help you lie about some 'problem' with the phone so you can get a new one because you AND your friend are dumbasses. Do you ever take responsibility for your actions, or do you always try to lie your way out of things and let others take the hit?

If you have a problem, they generally try to fix it first, so you can't claim it's a software issue as a simple restore would fix that. Hardware failures in small electronics are generally hard to fix, thus it can result in a replacement, but it is pretty hard to scam a hardware failure... you can't drop it in water because they'll know due to the indicators changing, you can manually break it because they'll definitely notice that, in fact, if you claim a problem they'll either call your bluff or say the problem was caused by your negligence and charge you for a new phone. Basically, not only is it a bad idea, I'm pretty sure it's also illegal.

Well being a Junior in college at San Jose state, I have realized that life aint fair. It's an ugly world and im just tryin to survive. So big deal if Apple is out ONE iPhone. They can always make more. And who gets hurt in this process? :confused: Not me, not the Genius, and not Apple because their too busy counting all the money they have made off me and all the other iPhone owners.

No matter what "problem" you tell a Genius about, as soon as he/she sees your scratched-up phone, they're likely going to know you're trying to scam them. The best advice is to make your dumbass friend pay for a new one.

I seriously doubt they'll call my bluff. That would be stupid on their part for questioning the customer. I have replaced my old iPhone before, twice, and never have they called my bluff.

So as long as it's a big business, it's alright to be an underhanded scumbag? (I'm a junior in college as well, with higher morals and values than you will ever have)

As much as I do not want to help you figuring it looks like you are trying to completely lie to Apple just to get a new phone, but one easy way is to check the screen for dead pixels, if there are a few then bring it in and ask for them to replace it, although I hope in your case they just take it for a week and just change the screen leaving all the scratches.

Too much work. I like to say work smart not hard. And that is what I plan on doing. Plus my warranty is good for a year, so I can just get the whole phone replaced. And until September 15th I am still under the 14 day no questions asked return policy.

I doubt you'll be back, unless it's to bitch about how "rude" Apple's employees are once they refuse to replace the phone you (your friend) messed up. No matter what problem you have, if your phone is really scratched up, they are going to refuse you. Hopefully, they'll prove your fake problem is a lie, first.

Maybe my description was harsh. It's not like the phone was stomped on and thrown in the street. It was dropped and my case flew off once it hit the ground. The scratches are mostly around the headphone jack, corners, and some on the chrome. The screen is still fine. Plus the phone is black so its hard to see the scratches.

Well clearly the OP didn't learn anything from any classes he took (assuming he took geography). He claims to have received an A and B in ethics. Based on his desire to lie to and scam Apple to fix what is so clearly his fault, he learned nothing from his ethics course as well as learning nothing about honesty and integrity as he was growing up.

your only chance is to pull off some serious social engineering and make the mac genius feel like you are his/her new best friend. Personally I think you should make your buddy cough up the cash to pay for yours or sell it on eBay. You should be able to get something decent for it considering the condition. Good luck on the scamming.

Good point. On my 1st gen iphone, I dropped it while drunk and cracked the screen. I lived with it no problem until my battery started acting up. I stayed with the geniuses for a good while showing them that my battery was going dead in just a few hours and they replaced it. I didnt want it replaced due to a cracked screen and eggmclovin wants it replaced due to a few scratches. He really needs to grow up and learn, yes, life isnt fair but you take the cards your dealt and due the best with them. Join the military and as soon as you are being shot at youll learn there are more important things in life than a few scratches on an iphone. Sorry for the rant, but im a little drunk(seems to be a pattern) and dudes complaining and cockiness set me off.
