I'm thinking about getting myself a black Powermac 5500 (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac/stats/powermac_5500_225.html) off eBay...

I'm looking for a machine that I can play all the abandonware games for os8/9 on and that might double as a nice surfstation via LAN in our student appartment...

does anyone have experience with such a machine? how well does the TV-part work and is upgrading the box with a G3-card later worth it? do 3rd party wireless PCI cards work in there?

I really like the black design and the all-in-one concept, plus my loaded SE/30 needs some company ;)

Its a great computer to use for what you want to use it for, but upgrading it is worthless. The upgrades start at (I believe, last time I checked) $199, and that is a G3 500, for that amount you can pick up a Beige G3, or with a little more a B&W G3 off of eBay.
