Dilemma: Need To Reinstall OSX, but no Optical Drive

ibook ppc g4 btw.

so i obtained a dmg of osx tiger, followed online tutorials to erase and format my ipod and install it there, then attempt to boot via firewire, but just got a folder icon with smiley and "?" upon reboot...so it went back to normal startup.

what other methods should i use to install this dmg on this computer? i have external hd devices but all usb (g4 won't boot from usb). can i create a new partition on the internal hd and install there?

but in short, via apple dl...it's about a 2.7gb file

which way did you format your IPOD, when I went to the disk manager I was given 3 options for formatting the MBR. One was to boot intel mac's, one was for PPC macs, and one was for pc's

I just upgraded to Leopard using an external hdd (15gb laptop drive in a usb enclosure)

The tutorial I read said to use the first option but that didnt work so I went back and actually read what the screen said and chose the 2nd option. Worked perfectly.

I'm assuming yours would be the same way since the IPOD would just be seen as an external hdd.

87vert: i think the problem is my ipod...it's had some hd reading issue but has been working fine for a while, i guess a task like booting an OS is too rigorous for it
