If you get to choose ONLY ONE device back to 20 years back,
would you say iPhone right away?
Iam working on school project and need your opinions!
Thanks ! Keep it Apple ! :apple:

LOL, of course I wouldn't. Who in their right mind would? First of all, it would be pretty useless without a network. Secondly, it would be horrendously useless without itunes and the computer where itunes were installed. It's far from a "stand alone-device"*–*in fact, if it were less of a stand alone-device, you would have to buy and download any and all contents in order to use it for anything.

I'd say true laptops, or even modern computers in general were significantly more valuable. The iPhone is a abridged network capable extension of computing.

That depends on your definition of "greatest."
Greatest impact on the most people?
Greatest impact on the person answering the question?
Greatest impact on civilization?
I'd say that there are very likely to be many contenders in the medical field that could qualify for that title.

I forgot to mention: The iPhone is NOT an "invention". It's merely yet another product in a long row of TYPES of products. Not an invention in itself.
Someone is way too much of a fanboy, and perhaps should focus on something else to write a school paper about.
If you were my student, I'd flunk you in heartbeat if you figured that the iPhone was an "invention" and used it as a premise for your paper.

Tosser--
To be fair, it is an invention. Every device is, even if it simply introduces a new way of doing the same thing as other products.
Great? Definitely. The greatest? I have to say no.

Invention usually means something else than just a variation of what is already available.
The telly was an invention. Going to other screen sizes using the same technology is hardly an invention in and of itself.
The same can be said of the iPhone: Although there are many variations of what is already available, it is no "invention", but merely variations.

i would take an Joint strike fighter or the latest aircraft carrier or something useful like that. Imagine the power you could have we just one jet fighter that could blow all others away. You could even force Steve Jobs to create the iPhone earlier and make it with copy and paste and mms and all those other things people never seem to stop bitching about.
Oh yeh, don't forget the nuclear bombs strapped to the fighter/carrier, that might help to persuade people. And btw i know these things were around only 20 years ago just not as refined or as sophisticated as they are today.
whilst your back there you might want to tell people to lay of the oil cause i'm sick of paying $1.40aus for 1 lousy L

No it doesnt:

Neither of that is true. What did they actually "invent"? Bringing features together (some crippled, but still) already present in other similar devices is not an "invention".
3. anything invented or devised.
See above.
4. the power or faculty of inventing, devising, or originating.
See above.
The rest of your copy/paste has nothing to do with this sort of product.

No I wouldn't say it's the most important thing invented in the last 20 years. Besides the fact that it relies on preexisting technological architecture and a host of other devices/systems to function, I would think there would be something more important than the iPhone that's been invented in the past 20 years, although I can't put my finger on it off the top of my head. My advice - look into medical R&D. I can guarantee that something more important than the iPhone has been invented in that field.

Everyone is entitled to their own ideas here. Would be nice if you would at least proofread your post before pushing the "Submit Reply" button. Almost impossible to understand what you are saying.
Anyways, the answer to your question, no. iPhone is great when I am on the go, but when I am home I am on my computer, watching TV, etc. Many better things than an iPhone. And Times said invention "of the year", not of the past 20 years.

Ah, yes –*well, I don't really care for how long you have owned an Apple-product or whether it's your first, but you're posting on a public forum, and if you cannot take critique, but only want to have people cheering your on, perhaps you should go write your school project instead. "Wtf!?".
Is there anything wrong doing project on Apple's invention and their creativity
Nope. But your premises is showing fanboyism, and I'd still flunk you if I had the chance. Simply because you seem to think that some idiotic consumer product is the "greatest invention evar!!" – a product that has existed for many a year – only this time it's your favourite company doing it, which, apparantly, makes all the difference to you.

Of course you should "keep it simple". But that doesn't mean that any "simple question" or "simple premise" is as good as the next.

Well, it all has to do with context. Debating what the definition of a word is is the basis of defining what we're talking about. When you get older you will learn that if we cannot agree on the terms, it's hard to debate the contents.

Right away, I wouldn't say so. Takes more than an instant to think of all such things.
I know it was around before 1988, but the router is more important because it makes the Internet possible. Without that, most of today's devices are rendered much less important.
I would also say the affordable gas-hybrid automobile engine has the potential to do a lot more good than an iPhone, even though it's not a "device."
I guess you could say the iPhone took a lot of prior devices and converged them as well as anybody has done. The PDA was a great invention, but who the heck enjoyed writing in graffiti or using monochrome itty bitty displays?
If my rambling has proven anything, it's that I can't say for sure that the iPhone is the top device.

First thing first. Half the functionality of the iPhone would fail since the modern internet didn't yet exist 20 years ago. Imagine awing crowds with GPS... oh wait Google Maps didn't exist yet so it would be nearly useless. Imagine taking a video and sending it to your friends... oh wait it still can't do either of those things :D

OP, I can't really understand you. If you can't write the English language, try to avoid using online language translators. They are difficult to understand (just like your posts).
What is your native language? Maybe someone here can help you.

No it's not saying a computer is useless without internet. Seriously, do you people think the computer was invented for the internet? Or were you all born in 1995?
The reason I'm saying that is that the iphone is "an internet capable 3G phone". Without those two types of network it's pretty much useless. I had computers before the internet. Hell, I worked as a journalist before the internet (!!) – Yes hard to fathom, even to myself - Neither network was reallly that widespread in 1988, to be honest.
