I am thinking about buying either a mac tibook/ibook or a windows laptop. I prefer the ease of use of the mac os and well as apple's designs as opposed to bland pc laptops. However, I hear that svcd playback and native divx playback is impossible on the mac platform? Is this true? The ability to play these formats will be one of the factors that will influence my decsion in which platform laptop to get.

hi taeclee!
don't worry, it's all possible with ease... just go to www.divx.com, download the mac os x alpha divx plugin and you can see avi's and stuff on quicktime.
for vcd's make a google search (plenty sites available) or just take one of these:
http://www.mireth.com/pub/mxme.html ($20 :-( )
http://www.moviemac.com/articles/players.html (a list of players)
hope this helps!

Hi Hobie,
Thanks for the reply.
I am glad to see that there are divx playback options for the mac os. Unfortunately, the other players that you mentioned only play mpeg 1 vcd's not mpeg 2 svcd's. Maybe I can play svcd's through virtual pc. I dunno.

Videolan.org have a player for OS X which plays MPEG-2 media. It's free, stable, good.... i like it ;)
You can download it from here (http://www.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/0.4.1/macosx/vlc-0.4.1.dmg).
