View Full Version : Ha! My Dad's Friend Can Give Me Any Program I Want!

dannyboxer
Dec 9, 2008, 02:22 PM
My Dad's friend has allot of Macs. He also has loads of copies of Mac programs (Final Cut, Aperture etc...) He is very interested in my recent purchase of my first ever Mac and has offered to give me any software I want for free!

Seeing as I might take a career in film making and graphics work, I am going to ask him for Final Cut Express 4, Aperture and iWork for school work.

Just thought I would share this with you. Any programs you recommend. I don't really want to ask him for too much though, that would be rude, I'll probably ask him program by program. :D

I think the software can be used on more than one Mac can't it? In that case they will be legit copies.

Maybe I should start a similar thread: My dad's friend works at BestBuy and he can steal any TV I want. Which one should I ask for?

Yep, won't get much respect with a thread like this.

Might as well start the short countdown to wasteland.

Within the same household, perhaps. Outside a single household? No.

No, not legally. It is licensed for a single user. Some packages are licensed for two machines as long as there is only a single user (so only one copy in use at once). You and he are both breaking the law.

Aperture is over rated, and you don't need it. Troll around osx.iusethis.com (http://osx.iusethis.com) and see if anything jumps out at you.

Humility is shareware. Get Humble 3.14.

Sure, it's in beta, but it's more stable than the retail versions of Jerk Pro and Liar Studio.

I can't believe someone is stupid enough to brag that they can get stolen software, and then ask everyone to help them choose what software to get.

Oh I didn't know, maybe he is pirating then. Or he could just have more than one copy for some reason.

If he's actually letting you keep the installation cd, then it's not illegal. He's giving you ownership of it. If he's letting you borrow it so you can install and then you have to give it back, that's stealing.

it wouldnt be pirating if he sold you the licesne and ceased to have a copy of the program himself

if he keeps the program and gives you a copy, thats pirating

It would be very ironic if you ended up becoming a filmmaker, made a film, and people pirated it.

Save up your paper round money and buy the copies, yeah it sucks and it's legit (which isn't cool with tha brap brap biggitup homie kids dese days I know) but it's rewarding to have a propper copy, and a god send when things go wrong...

Don't get into pirating at an early age, it all goes down hill from there. Speaking from experience here.

It's possible that this is legit. The Dad could be getting a volume discount on software purchases and ending up with more installer disks or licenses than they have machines to install on.

Depending on how the software is distributed and how the license is worded, there may be no restrictions on who can use the extra CDs or licenses.

However this, on the surface, sounds like the dad is taking advantage of the lack of DRM on Mac software to allow you to pirate a copy of the software.

http://guides.macrumors.com/Help:Forum_Rules#Things_Not_to_Do I think this also means talk about pirated software. I've seen threads get wastelanded for this.

Do not post software serial numbers or keys or refer people to specific websites or software whose purpose is to break or bypass software licensing methods, distribute cracks, or obtain or use commercial software or media in violation of its license and/or for copyright violation. Do not ask for or give such help.

I think everyone is going pretty easy on you dannyboxer tbh. I've seen some members who start threads like this get slammed pretty well. Anyway, chalk it up as an education. You can learn a lot around here.;)

You should ask the friend if it would be pirated. See what he has to say. It's possible that he has software that was legitimately purchased that he doesn’t need and that he is going to give you. In which case, take it and be very grateful, because you are talking about a lot of money.
