Jailbreak != license to pirate.
Sooo... Is that the only reason people Jailbreak their iPhones? What other advantages are there to hacking the firmware? (maybe it's not really hacking?)
Fireproof!

You do realize that "!=" stands for "does not equal" right?
People don't jailbreak their phones to pirate software.

Not sure I understand the question. JB does not equal piracy. You are not stealing anything. What I am saying is that JB does not give one a license to pirate or steal other software.

Now that you have Cydia, just get out your credit card and buy the apps you want through iTunes. :p

OK..
Then what do people jailbreak their iPhones for?
Cause it's nothing todo with network unlocking, I know that much.

Ohh... I didn't even think someone would not understand that. Now the question makes sense....

In order to iinstall custom themes, add apps (both free and paid) from non-AppStore sources -- generally treat the phone as the small computer it really is.

I'm no expert on jailbreaking. But one reason is to get to "developer settings" and mess with the phone in ways that you would not be able to otherwise. Another reason would be to run applications that are not "apple approved".

To get apps not available through the app store, like mms and video recorder and winterboard.
Basically it is a way for people to tweak the phone more than what apple allows on a non jailbroken phone.
OP: It is a violation of the rules of this forum to discuss pirating software.

Themes, lower-level access to the OS, applications that Apple won't allow in the App Store because of their taking-advantage-of-ness of this lower-level access...
Oh, I did get the "I Am Rich" app, though. I'm such a bad person; getting for free a $999.99 app... It's such a pretty picture of a jewel. ;)

Hmm... Interesting.
I've only recently adopted an iPhone, so the concepts of what could be done after freeing it, is still a little alienating to me.
I simply brought it cause it's able to receive emails that ain't in english... I find windows based mobiles to be clunky at best, then there's a lack of language support due to annoying localization.

In light of the topic of this thread, I think it might bear mentioning that the app you really got was called "Am I Rich". Not the same as the $10K AppStore app... so you didn't steal a thing. Whew. There. Now I feel all better...:D

Cydia is like an alternate app store. Some apps are free, others you pay for.
