View Full Version : Friend got wrong iPod for Christmas!

So I have a PC-using friend who I've been trying to sway to the Apple way for quite some time. His latest computer is relatively new, so I don't see him trying out a Mac anytime soon, but I at least wanted him to get an iPod! He has a MP3 player, but it's this really ugly, really big, low-capacity piece of crap that I can't believe was ever made. My boyfriend and I call it a "potato," because that what it reminds us of. He's always seemed sorta/kinda curious about Apple products, but acts scared of them too -- like he's not meant to use them, or they won't "work" in his life.

Well....today he texted me to say he finally got an iPod for Christmas from his mom!!
BUT...

....it's a 120 GB Classic.

Better than his potato, that's for sure -- but there's no WAY he needs all of that space. He has MAYBE 8GB, tops. But it's probably a lot less.

He would have been much better off with a Touch or a Shuffle. I want to convince him to switch for one of those, but (A) he's the type of person who wouldn't want to offend his mother and (B) what's the best way to do that anyway? Try and sell it? Go to Craigslist? Does Apple accept returns?

I just feel like he'll NEVER have enough stuff to fill his Classic and that it's wasted on him. And he's not getting the BEST Apple experience he could get, and I want him to be be "wowed" (which a Touch would have done, or even a Shuffle for being so small). But should I just forget it, and just be happy that he has SOMETHING Apple?

i dont think its any of your business to be frank

seriously...

sometimes the thought of the gift is more important than the gift itself. i know i would lose a lot of respect for any of my friends who tell me to return a gift because they dont like it.

*shakes head*
How is this at all relevant to anything? It's not the wrong iPod, hell it is a great iPod.
I hope he is happy ... clearly you're not. :(

He has an iPod. That's enough really.

Don't make him feel bad about his present, I'm sure he'll be perfectly happy with it. Besides, he could always purchase a large amount of music now safe in the knowledge that his iPod will always be able to hold it.

So in a way I guess it's future-proof for a good few years of music collection.

I'll add a Nano to your list..
And Apple DOES accept returns.
anyway, if he doesn't want to offend his Mom, he better start listening to more music and watch some movies on his iPod, I agree an iPt would have been the best choice or an iPhone for that matter, but now that he has quite a responsive iPod he can start loading more and more music, and I think there are some games for Classics too.

Yeah I know exactly what your saying and I feel you. My family is talking about getting a Mac Pro when a Mac Mini is really all they need.

I think you should try and convince him into talking to his Mom, not about exchanging the iPod, but getting another iPod that better suits him, and if he doesn't want to then just let it go.

I AM happy he has his iPod. And I DON'T want to make him feel bad for getting what he did. I was very excited for him, and made him feel great for it -- and told him I'd help him to use it and that it would change his life.

It's just unfortunate he'll never use it to its full potential, and I doubt he'll ever have more than 16GB of music in his lifetime.

He COULD fill it up with movies (he's got a big collection), but I don't think he's the type of person who would spend all that time adding them to his iPod (and would never have time to watch them there anyway -- except maybe once or twice a year when he flies somewhere).

I guess I should just keep my feelings to myself and let him enjoy it. Thanks for the responses!

EDIT: How did I forget the Nano? That would have been great too!

how do you know it doesnt suit him?

this thread is about what the op thinks is suitable for him. its not the op's place at all. period

the thought behind this thread disgusts me

Mind your own business. Sorry for being outright rude, but honestly, it's the guy's opinion. If he likes it, it's none of your business. If he doesn't, it's also none of your business. Let him enjoy it and when he thinks it's overkill for him or has a problem, he can come asking you for help. Now does that make you feel a bit better?

Oh op...how is any of this your business. There are starving people in the world. He has an ipod. Just let him be thankful he got something at all and leave him alone.

What the hell, the Classic is a brilliant iPod. My sis got one today and even though her iTunes library is a smidgen over her previous 4gb Nano there is plenty of room to expand. Maybe your friend will want to put videos on his iPod and then be thankful for all that space, or maybe his music library will bloom.

Wrong iPod my arse.

Wow - some of the venom expressed here it a little dramatic and over-the-top, no? Some of you guys are acting like I slapped your mothers or something.

I haven't done anything here but express an opinion. And that's ALL I'm doing here. I didn't make my friend feel bad for getting a Classic. Quite the opposite. I simply told you what I was thinking internally, and asked if I should just forget it and move on or what? And I know you're just expressing your own opinions back, but seriously...is it not possible to do so without making it sound like I'm the worst person ever to have an opinion? You know, it IS possible to get your point across without THIS kind of melodrama:

Sigh.

Anyway...Merry Christmas everyone!
