Bittorent for Mac does not do anything.

Ok so for a long time i have known about bittorent. It has always been there whenever I tried to download anything it would always be a torrent. I have downloaded bittorent around 10 times over the years and have always got the same error. It just doesn't do anything! I download bittorent and I download my torrent then I open it with bittorent and... Nothing! it says looking for firewall or something like that. It has just never worked. I have tried many different sites and I have left it on all night to see if anything would happen. Please help I want to download some family guy episodes for my ipod touch but I can't find anywhere to do it but a torrent! Please help!
