"okay", harddrive fail is very normal especially on laptops, as apple use same harddrive brands like dell and hp it should not be a big difference in hdd failure rate. AND every company take back the broken harddrive, that's a policy I think every company have. So that's not anything strange with that.

And about how he said people say that mac is much better I don't think ppl say that the technology in the macs are better, just the software and design :P

So summery: that guy is a complete idiot, and will soon realise that they got the same rutins on the pc side when it comes to hdd failure.

What is it, a MacBook?

Buy a 2.5" HDD.
Take off battery.
Unscrew L-shaped thingy.
Pull out old hard drive.
Take out of tray.
Put tray on new hard drive.
Slide back in.
Reassemble.
COMPLETE IDIOT.

and software like diskwarrior lets you rescue most of your data that would have been lost forever if in a different computer as I know Windows software of that kind doesn't work as well.

So inappropriate. First he personally attacks the genius bar workers. (I actually have never seen any genius that smells bad or anything, but I guess that's different outside of my Apple store area) But that was totally uncalled for.

Second, if he is a "computer" guy, how hard was it to get a replacement 2.5" HDD himself? How much are they anyways? Well, not that expensive!
Besides, opening the BOX to take out the laptop, is already agreeing to the user agreements and stuff. And it's consumer's responsibility to read all the documentations (although I never do, but then I never blame anyone but myself for that) before using the actual product. And I'm pretty sure it's written in the user agreement that if there are any problems with the computer, and they need to replace a part, they'd have to take it back, and they're not responsible for any losses of data or some sort.

Anyways, totally inapproriate, his attitude is going to get him nowhere anyways.

By the way: not the same case, but when my MBPro arrived with the 320GB 5400rpm drive, instead of 320GB 7200rpm drive, they shipped me a brand-new shiny 320GB 7200rpm to my door, didn't ask me to return the 5400rpm at all. No questions asked, no accusations, whatever. That's called being NICE to people. All I did was to take back my MacBook Pro back to the shop I bought from, showed them the receipt and my system information. But I did that in a manner where I didn't think anyone was smelly, and even if they were, that should never be affected in deciding of their technical skills and skills to follow a guideline from the company they work for.

WOW that guy is an idiot. They are offering to fix it and the guy gives him a hard time? When I 1st started reading it I was thinking maybe they are going to give him a hard time.
And paetrick is right, Apple doesn't make the hard drive and you always need to back it up.

WOW WTF. First of all, if he had that much important info on a hard drive, a prudent person would back it up. pc's and macs use the same hard drives, so the hard drive failure is not the fault of apple. this guy is a complete idiot. and im not sure what genius bar he went to, but we have some strapping young lads at ours, no girls though for some reason, that kinda blows...

Since this guy obviously isn't familiar with computers someone should tell him to always make backups, no matter if one uses OS X or Windows. What will he do when his pcs hd dies, use Linux? :)

This guy is a total idiot. Some people just want to be breast-fed, despite them being 30+ years old. If hes a technician or an IT guy - its not rocket science replacing a hard disk - a 10 year old can do it.

Oh and, every company has this policy. My previous Dell machine, my hard drive went bust, they were quick to send one out (phoned Dell up, new hard drive came next day via UPS) and a few days later Dell did indeed chase me up and say to send the old one back (which I did).

I believe they take the duffed ones back in, repair it, wipe it and then sell them as refurb units.

Woah, the first thing I did with mine was switch the hard disk for a 160GB disk and bought 2GB RAM from crucial.

How can he say he was a 'PC Guru' when he's too scared to switch a Hard Disk.

Apple should sue him for defamation of character.

Exactly, I believe the problem was giving away his personal information contained in that HDD
