I'm stoked... it looks like tangible updates to me. I hate doing things like security updates and most other updates for that matter I guess. I rarely notice anything different. I'm always excited when they list programs I use in the update... although sometimes it's just background stuff that I'll probably never notice. Oh well...
Last night I turned off my iBook (which I normally don't do). I only turned it off because I had had it encoding video since Monday and I felt bad for the poor thing. So I let it rest.

iPod at Home??
Something that was mentioned on Apple's web site for Panther but never showed up and was removed from the web site. In short it let you store your home directory on your iPod and then you could log into your desktop by plugging your iPod into a Mac and logging in with your username/password....

So the description has the same details as 7F34? what was fixed or changed in 7F38?
The new graphics drivers are apparently 15-17% faster than those included with 10.3.2.

heh, one of the updates is that iTunes will recognize iPods plugged in with USB 2.0 :P
Personally, I think iDisk should work a little better when you don't have it stored locally. It seems like it's killing Finder when you're using it, even on a T1 connection. If you scroll too much it often requires a Finder relaunch. not everytime or anything, but i mean compared to the overal Mac experience, using iDisk kinda lags behind

aha i think the change will allow you to put an alias of your network drive in your sidebar. right now, the volumes only appear after you log on. you can't simply drag them to the sidebar to save them for one-click access.

I wonder that when they do release this latest build, if they will put it out to CD like in the past and replace those initial 10.3. The reason I ask is I'm still using Jaguar and it would be a drag to buy the Panther and go thru the updates one by one after changing the OS.
Besides, wasn't the initial Panther release buggy?

Has anyone else had problems with email since the last update to 10.3? Windows colleagues no longer can open my Office documents, although they could before the last update. My workaround is to zip them first. Sometimes they say two documents come (Mac's invisible companion files and some kind of MIME conflict?), but in call cases they cannot open them any more.

Shares accessed by going to the Network autodetect thing don't show up on my desktop or in my sidebar even though I have the appropriate preference enabled (as in your picture). They do show up in both if I access them via Connect To Server... in the Finder's Go menu, which is probably what you did to get that share mounted.

Currently volumes do NOT appear on the desktop if you browse to them via Rendezvous. That's a fix I'll welcome. Esepcially if you can connect AND disconnect reliably without messing with IP numbers.
And USB support for iPod is good: now it can work with my pre-Firewire Mac maybe! Not vital, but nice. (Only USB 1.1, but still ought to work.)

That happened to me in Jaguar. I sent two word documents to my office, and they came in as a MIME file that was the real file, and the original .doc file which was bad. I had to rename the MIME file to the original name and it worked on the Windows side. Not sure why it happened, I haven't tried it again yet.

That's not true. OS X still respects type/creator codes, which are stored in the resource fork. Some apps put these in automatically (Word) but many rely only on extensions.
Image previews are also stored in resource forks. Resource forks are NOT dead and gone.

Not only that, but resource forks on the Mac won't die completely until we switch to a filesystem other than HFS (which is the only filesystem I know of that supports multiple forks), and thus have to abandon Classic.

I think the issue is that you can currently only return to the most recently used server via an alias. After I connect to a second server, the alias to the first server (in my dock) no longer works until I reconnect again through the "Connect to Server" command.
Hopefully this update will allow permanent aliases.

Yes, I had some problems with attachments sent by mail. I figured that checking 'send windows compatible' in the attachment dialog fixes that.
When simply draggin and dropping into the mail it can cause problems.

As it turns out, zipping files also strips them of their resource forks, which explains why zipping files before sending them works like it does.
FYI, zipping does not necessarily strip resource forks. If you use the "Create Archive" contextual menu item in the Finder, it preserves the resource forks in the zip archive it creates. MacZip and Stuffit also preserves them. It may be that they transparently do a MacBinary flattening on the file first, but still it is possible to maintain resource forks in zip files.
I don't know what happens if you use gzip on the command line, that may not work correctly. And of course if you use a zip program on some other platform, like Linux or PC, then it probably won't preserve them.

I forgot about those; anyway, I read somewhere that the zipping process strips resource forks unless the resource fork is stripped from the original file and zipped separately, then reassembled by a program that understands resource forks (Windows zip programs obviously won't do this). Therefore resource fork preservation in zip archives is essentially a hack.

When you browse the network and log-in to a remote computer, there is no icon on the desktop. The main problem is, how do you eject / put away the network connection, or how do you know if you are still connected.
But when I use apple script to log-in the icon does appear on the desktop.

Whack in a Pioneer DVR-106 (native 4x burning in Panther) or a DVR-107 (8x burning, works in Panther with an easy hack - supposedly native in 10.3.3, possibly indicating this drive will be used in PowerMac G5 revisions).
For a Rev A. Powerbook 17", update the firmware to go from 1x to 2x burning.

There is something called the AppleSeed program, in which they seed pre-release software to fairly normal end-users (as opposed to developers [members of the ADC]). I can't recall anyone on a forum ever admitting to being an AppleSeed participant--either there aren't very many of them or they sign a pretty serious NDA (or maybe both). Also, last I checked Apple wasn't seeking any new participants. I would like to be one of them, though... :)

http://www.thebigreason.com/signatures/nw.jpg
In Panther, there are two ways to connect to network shares. The 1st way (the way I always do it, and apparently you as well) is to use Go -> Connect to Server, and give it a URL, or choose from a list of recent/favorite servers. This will place the network share you just logged into on the sidebar and/or on your desktop, depending on the way you have your Finder Preferences set. The other way to connect to a server is to browse the network using the handy dandy Network icon in the sidebar. The results are currently somewhat unmaclike in that once you connect to a server, there is no obvious way to disconnect from the server, short of logging out of the local system, or pulling your network plug. Interestingly, if you Change out a couple of the terms*, Windows works in the exact same way.
My interpretation of the new feature, is that when you connect to a server from the Network icon, the server will show up on the sidebar/Desktop just like if you had connected using the Go menu. This would make me happy, and i'd probably even use the browsing method more often if that was the case.
*the terms to replace are Go -> Connect to Server with Right click on My Network Places and chose Map Network Drive, and handy dandy Network icon with My Network Places

I sent a "Windows-friendly attachment" (just a picture) with an email to my mum's PC and she couldn't open it. So I always make sure I DON'T check the box.
10.3.3 sounds so good. And the OS is already so good. I really like Panther and the way Apple is developing it. Hopefully the fix should stop the Finder from crashing or hanging for ages when browsing networks. And yet another Safari update?

To ^, there is both a Safari and WebCore update in the 10.3.3 release :)
I'm hoping it comes this Tuesday, I'm getting a little impatient!
I also hope it fixes the Finder crashing when you drag a load of pictures on the desktop when icon preview is enabled. That's bloody annoying.
As I keep saying, I'm really really glad it sorts out application launch time problems caused with 10.3.2. Safari used to open in one bounce, now it's three :(

Yeah but do you think theres an essance of a chance you could like contact apple to say you are willing to help out and get an update sent to you, think i heard they do similar thigns with beta testers on game formats.
I wouldn't on my G4. We do have a spare iBook that I would be willing to be a beta tester.

*the terms to replace are Go -> Connect to Server with Right click on My Network Places and chose Map Network Drive, and handy dandy Network icon with My Network Places
yes that is what happens, click on network in the sidebar, log into your local server or wherever and when you log on the server mounts and the icon appears in your sidebar for easy ejecting.

[QUOTE=Macrumors]Apple seeded Mac OS X 10.3.3 7F38 on Thursday to developers. Key enhancements are said to include:
- iPods connected via USB 2.0 are now recognized by iTunes and iSync
Just usb 2 or will it work on usb 1 as well?

It will work with USB1, but it will be very slow. Basically, Apple is conceding by allowing Mac users to use USB instead of FireWire. USB 2 was seen as a rival to FireWire but, now that Apple includes USB 2 on all its computers (ok except eMacs), it is conceding for ease of use. The USB 2 option was originally to help shift more iPods to PC user because many PCs still foolishly do not ship with FireWire.

I'm ready and waiting for those graphic driver updates...Halo could use a serious boost on my computer. The SMB networking will be a welcome fix as well, I've become rather tired of having my entire computer come to a halt when I try to connect to an SMB share...

So the description has the same details as 7F34? what was fixed or changed in 7F38?
The new graphics drivers are apparently 15-17% faster than those included with 10.3.2.
My new faster graphics driver likes to do this when I play my favorite games:

I'm just happy to hear the update has USB printing improvements. Hopefully I'll be able to use my HP LaserJet 1200 now. It's been dead ever since I upgraded to Panther.
I'm having the same problem with my HP LaserJet 1200. I've downloaded 10.3.3 but still cannot print? Any words of wisdom? Ugh!
