I like how you took a photo of just the metal so we can clearly see what the problem is.

where is this item being used? what is your work environment like? if there is no fluid in the machine it is reasonable to assume that either you or the moisture in your work environment is causing the corrosion to happen. this is not impossible and could occur in areas where humidifiers or salt rich air (seaside) can be found.
