I have been trying to connect to my buddies afp address to send him some files, how come I can't connect to him? I have all the sharing buttons clicked on and we both have addresses to place in the network address when we try to connect. But nothing happens, we get the never ending bar that never connects. Can I get some help here?

I am using a wireless router, does that have anything to do with it?

cheers/bnkr

you can sftp to transfer files , if thats all you want..at the terminal
sftp ip_of his_computer
it would ask for a password though..
once connected, 'put' to place a file.. 'get' to take a file
hope it helps..sorry dont know about afp..

Make sure that both of your IP addresses are global, and not local. I can't connect to my home computer for example because it's behind a router that assigns its computers individual static IP addresses that are not real to people outside of the LAN. See if your friend is behind a router as well, as even if you are behind one you should be able to connect out.

If you don't want to futz around with IP addresses, use iChat to send files.

I use a D-Link wireless router, which has a static IP. I set the router to pass throught to my desktop so the user can log on and access my public folder. Even though internally I use DHCP, there are no issues as far as access. If your ISP uses DHCP, I really like the iChat idea. If you're a .Mac user, it's easy that way too. I'm finding .Mac indispensable. I start a draft at work right from the Docs folder in .Mac, get home, there it is, right where I left off. Bottom line: There are other, simpler ways to accomplish what you need besides the IP or FTP thing.
