View Full Version : iPhoto Printing in Europe
MacRumors
Mar 19, 2004, 08:54 AM
According to one reader report, Photo and Album Printing have been activated in iPhoto for UK customers (and presumably most of Europe).
These features allows iPhoto users to turn their pictures into prints and photo albums for enjoyment away from the computer.
Originally available only for U.S. customers, Steve Jobs announced (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2004/01/20040111181201.shtml) in January that Photo Books and Prints would become available in Europe in March.

I just ordered my first iPhoto's directly from iPhoto.. works like a charm... Only thing that bothers me that the pricing is almost double compared to the other online services in The Netherlands...
Is this the same for different countries??

I can vouch for Arn (not that Arn needs vouching for ;) ). The iPhoto book is very nice, especially the cloth binding. The print quality could be a little better in my view--it's not as good as printing on my Canon on nice photo paper--but it's also not inkjet printing; it seems much more like your standard four-color print process. Much more durable than an inkjet print. We gave them as Christmas presents last year and everyone loved them.

I also have one. Very nice. Just be sure the pictures are arranged the way you want first, obviously. Make sure the album photos are in the proper sequence before making the book, and also plan on spending some time redoing the "auto" suggestions iPhoto does for you ("why did it put one picture on this page and four on that one?"). However, if it looks OK when you order it, it will arrive looking great!

Yes, I've done a few and they are amazing. After my mom passed away, I took all her family photos, scanned them and had them printed into hardcover books that I gave all my siblings at Christmas. They were beautiful and well-received.
A word of advice on layout: there isn't much layout control, you basically get to choose between one and four pics per page, and they don't always line up perfectly, sometimes they bleed, sometimes they don't; i haven't quite figured out why this is, possibly having to do with resolution or something. Anyway, my advice for better layout control is to assemble complete pages in Photoshop and import them into iPhoto.
Good luck, you will be pleasantly surprised. I have been a design pro for 15 years and have a good eye for print quality, so I wasn't expecting to be blown away but I really was very pleased with the whole thing.

I agree with you on the level of control, but you are able to achieve some control by reordering the photos in the library. I even showed my kids how to do this (aged 9 and 11) and they made entire books for their great-grandparents. Another point--sometimes it crops photos as well. Take a close look before you send it in and make sure nothing important is cut off. On a couple of occasions I resorted to cropping the photos in iPhoto to make the auto-cropping work the way I wanted.

Sorry Apple, thats FAR too expensive for regular prints.
At the smallest size, the prints are 0.33 Euro apiece. *plus* 16 % VAT *plus* shipping (starting at 2.99).
I did a small conversion for our US friends. Including tax, this is $ 0.49 per print. At the SMALLEST size.
The books are only good if you want something for a REALLY special event - else it would be too expensive too. When would you pay 78 Euros ( $ 100 !!) for a photobook with 24 pages?
All I can say:
I will choose other services, thank you.

There was no iPhoto 3. It's either iPhoto 2 or iPhoto 4. If you have Rendezvous album sharing in your version of iPhoto, then you have iPhoto 4. If not, then it's likely you have iPhoto 2.

The price for prints throught iPhoto in the U.S. is coincidentally $0.49 USD. You can get them cheaper through something like walmart.com however ($0.29 if my brain remembers correctly). Yes they are sort of expensive.
The books... I spent a few hours putting a book together and it was about 20 pages or so. I was the price was around $60! I'll make my own photo albums for the time being thanks you. They are extrememly nice (I've seen them in the Apple Stores) but unless it's a really special event (wedding or something of that nature) I think I'll stick to glue and paper.
But I guess that's why there are alternatives. Apple can price things however they want (or Kodak if that's the case) and we can choose not to purchase it (sometimes... :))

I won't do it until they print on acid-free paper, as most other photo services of this type do.

They are actually $.39, but wouldn't that be about the same price as in Europe, once you account for the v.a.t.? I've never ordered prints, but it seems like a reasonable option if you didn't have a good printer.

The books I have made have been shorter than that--usually around 10 pages, for $29. That doesn't seem too bad to me, given the quality of the book and the binding. You'd pay almost that much for a decent photo album plus printing costs, but this is much nicer.

Apple's photo books are printed on acid-free paper as stated on the iPhoto Book web page (http://www.apple.com/ilife/iphoto/books.html):
Professionally printed on acid-free glossy paper and bound in an elegant linen cover, iPhoto books become treasured keepsakes that others will enjoy for years to come. We hope you enjoy yours.

I've done 2 books and am working on two more. I think they are fantastic and hope Apple continues to expand the program.
I don't consider the books an alternative to printing photos - they are more of a project to me and can be a lot of work (with scanned OLD pics) and a lot of fun.
In terms of options, there are several styles and you can select 1 through 4 pics per page with the style establishing how they are arranged. Much faster to order on a DSL/cable line as the larger file you have for a pic the better it will look.

Also, as someone else pointed out, Apple does claim to use acid-free paper.

The price for 4x6" prints is $0.39 each. Not $0.49 each.
Try going to a printer and asking them to print and bind you one book and see what price they give you. They are not something that you routinely purchase, but for $80.00 for 24 pages you can have a bound book that is very nice. The reaction when people recieve or see one of the books is usually astonishment followed by how did you do that? On a Mac of course!

prints are priced correctly, as they follow the street price quite well; however, the books are way too expensive - for a 34 page book thy ask 100+ euros (including shipping) and i couldn't think of anything else than wedding album i would buy for that price. for half the price i'd order a book for every vacation trip album as well.

Thirty four pages? That's incredibly long for a photo album. What are you taking pictures of? Remember you can put up to four pictures on a page, and the pages are very large and print all the way to the edge. I took a month long vacation to the Western U.S. and only came up with about 80 photos worth sharing (out of 200 shots)--that would be only 20 pages. If I was going to make an album, I'd probably trim it down to 10 pages--just $29.

Just a nit to pick -- it would be "endlich" in German. "schließlich" is more like "eventually". Anyway, the photos can be sent to Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain and the UK -- according to iPhoto.

Since there are better alternatives to making prints in the US the only time I have ordered prints via iPhoto was when I was in Japan and had prints made and sent to my mother in Idaho. Yeah, I second the notion for iPhoto in Australia. And I seriously think we should get iTMS now. I mean, I realise all the problems they're having in Europe, but I highly doubt that same thing would be happening here.
Anyway, my main reason for this post it to ask - how long does it take to receive your book once you've ordered it? I'll be in NY for a week later this year at the end of a holiday around Europe, and I wouldn't mind getting a book of some of the photos of the trip.

Cool, I learned something today. I'll have to try and keep that in mind. Now, if I can ever understand the proper usage of studieren versus lernen.
For the person who mentioned that there should be an iTunes Canada, I agree. That seems like the next logical place where iTunes should seek support. Since the US and Canada are fairly close, it seems like something of a mystery why Canada isn't supported, unless there is some province which is having problems. Or maybe they need to get record company authorization from the Nunavut territory, but they couldn't find anybody. Perhaps Australia would also be another place to target for the iTMS.

Most digital cameras take 4:3 ratio images, which would be 6x4.5" prints.
The Kodak service is only offers 6x4" prints which will mean images are cropped, and I see no settings in iPhoto to setup prints pre-cropped, so you could end up with some odd results.
I always use http:www.photobox.co.uk which allows 6x4" and 6x4.5" prints, so it's your choice.
I once got some digital prints done in Jessops (UK Camera high street store) and did not check to see if they did 6x4.5" prints (which they don't) and ended up with 120 prints, many with parts cropped which ruined the photos.
Oh well, I suppose this is Kodaks fault, not Apples, do Kodak cameras not use 4:3 ratio image sensors?

I keep reading posts referring to this as apple's book printing, when the books are actually produced by mypublisher.com (http://www.mypublisher.com). Same service, but with fewer options than used with a PC, and no " made with a mac" obviously. I guess tight integration with iPhoto is the trade off. Same pricing structure, i think.
Also, I wonder who is printing for Europe?

I've just ordered my first book. 12 pages and £30.39 all in. Regardless of whom actually produces the item, I am glad that this internal functionality is finally available to us Brits (and fellow Europeans!) and am tremendously looking forward to receiving my order!

If I was going to make an album, I'd probably trim it down to 10 pages--just $29.
well, you know the wives :) we took about 500 photos over a week-long trip and after a trimdown there still is well over 100 pics to be printed. there's an option to put six pics per page, but that's not always a usable option. in average it seems to be three per page, but varies a lot.
i did some math; however, to better understand the price. the thing is, if we took the old-style solution we'd end up paying a good 50 euros for a nice-looking empty photo book and about 40 euros for printing the photos. that's 90 euros and every photo would be the standard size. come to think of it, 120 euros for printed book (including shipping and taxes) is only about 30 euros more expensive and i could guess the printed book would be of amazing quality. i could justify 30 extra euros for that, and having the option to get variable picture sizes.
go apple!

Hi,
We are a Kodak Express store in Australia and I have set up a register for expressions of interest in making an iPhoto plugin that will allow iPhoto to print to our store. We have decided that to make it worthwhile to invest in the development of the plugin, we will need 350 people to express interest in it. I plan to make it a bit better than the current printing plugin so that you can choose matte or gloss finish.
If you are interested in this service for Australia, please go to here (http://www.framedphotographics.com/iphoto.php)

I think us Brits should be used to paying premium prices for things by now, especially macs. Apple's USD--->GBP conversion rates are horrendous.
I would pay 20p (~$0.35) more for prints straight from iPhoto rather than any other online printing thingybob, simply because of the convenience factor, and also the 'ooh, isnt that cool' that I will get from relatives when they ask for a print :)

Apple does use acid free paper. So pony up the bucks. ;)
I misspoke. Yes, Apple does use acid-free paper, but the books are not printed with archival ink, and are not archival quality. I've been told they'll last about 10 years before browning.
As for alternatives, there are some, but mostly PC-based. Unfortunately, all are better.
mypublisher.comcreates a photo album that is 11 inches wide by 8 1/2 inches high. Depending on the layout, you can fit up to four pictures per page. The pictures are printed using archival ink, on acid-free archival paper. The book should last 100 years or more. It does not work on a Mac.
Snapfish (http://www.snapfish.com) also produces these books. Its format is 11 inches by 9 inches. Each page can hold up to three pictures. The pictures are printed on a high-grade, glossy bond paper. Snapfish states that this will easily last 100 years or more. Snapfish is for Windows only. Each book is $29.95.
All services sell extra pages. MyPublisher charges $2.95 per extra page. Snapfish's rate is $1.99. Extra pages are $3 each at iPhoto.
A good reason to get Virtual PC, I guess (as long as you don't have a G5), or use Windows Services for Macintosh to network to an XP Pro machine.
Any way you look at it, Apple's offering is lower quality and more expensive. That, quite frankly, sucks.

I'm glad to see Apple expanding its business more overseas and internationally. Now they just need to continue to expand iTunes to international markets as well. Though I'm sure they are working on this. :)

thanks wendy - ok - i wish i could use the other book making services to make my folio but i don't have a pc and virtual pc suck :( s in terms of speed and is too expensive for a (poor) student to buy.
- so does anybody know how big the iphoto books are cos i heard someone say they had one and if they r printed double sided or just on one side - also just incase iphoto gets buggered - is there a way to save iphoto books in iphoto (cos this workbook is gonna take hours to make)
thanks folks

I love the way when Apple does get round to doing something, iPhoto books, processor bumps etc, people immediately find faults.
The books may not have archival quality paper, but hey, you can have a book of your pics for £30 straight from your computer.
Thats cool.
If you're that bothered about longevity I hope you have all your photos on slide film, as in 10 years your digital files are going to be screwed more than likely.
Anyhows....
Looking forward to the iTMS coming over here. Soon.

i would also like to know if the iphoto books are printed in both sides. i guess the books are one-sided because the page numbering seems to always be in the lower right corner and that would not be feasible for two-sided printing.
hard facts, anyone?
(i don't actually even have decided if the two-sided printing is better than one-sided; it might be that one-sided book would be better 'cause there would be plenty of room for notes and other stuff my wife always likes to include in photo books ;) and one-sided books will be thicker also, which looks nicer.)

Actually digital is totally different from slide or any other format as you can make perfect copies in sconds. The only thing you will have to do with digital is to update the storage method as new methods come on-line.
(Oh and check they are not deteriorating.)
Creating a complete and 100% accurate copy of all my digital photos (I've been digital since 2001) would take me only 2 DVD Ram disks, and however long it takes to burn them.
You cannot make a 100% accurate copy of a slide. and I hate to think how I could catalogue 13,000 slides!

FYI, I immediately ordered some test photos. The quality is rather good, and the pictures come in a nice Apple-branded envelope :).
Interestingly, the pictures say "Printed by Ofoto". Ofoto's "normal" prices can be seen here (http://www.ofoto.de/HelpPrice.jsp?UV=248068776469_78321384633). So even on a 10x15 (cm) print, Apple already adds €0.04...

So, the 4 cent are the bonus that the nice Apple envelope costs extra :D

My first set of photos arrived today.
I found ordering nice and easy and the service quick and average price. The quality of the prints seems excellent and the packaging good - however, there was no way to determine where an image would need to be cropped in order to fit a 6x4 print - and quite a few photos have been ruined because of this.
In other software (Jessops for the PC springs to mind), you can see instantly what portion of the photo will be printed, rotate it, zoom or crop as necessary. All very easy.
So, nicest way to order on the Mac I've seen yet, but still way behind the PC - something I don't often say :(

Yes, they are printed only on one side. The difficulty of laying out a good two-page spread, in my view, makes this a good choice. The books are pretty thin as it is, so you're right--printing double-sided would also make them seem rather insubstantial.
