slashdot had an ask-slashdot on purchasing computer in the U.S. and bringing it back, taking advantage of the weak dollar. this is also a fairly popular topic at MR.

i do not know the validity of this page, but it seems to be a good summary of policies for people living in the UK.

what's interesting is the "personal effects" tax free allowance. i don't have any further information, but i believe this allowance can only be applied for goods purchased during foreign residence, i.e. NOT for goods purchased during a weekend shopping spree trip to NYC. ;)

basically, if you went the "honest" way, you may not save much in the end, especially if you don't get the U.S. sales tax refunded.
