This should help Apple make its way (hopefully) into Pixar.

Pixar has already switched over to G5s running Mac OS X.

Do you think Pixar is being given priority for G5's and/or XServes? This could add even more of a delay for everyone else.

Hmmm....how many would Pixar need? I mean, Apple sells what, 200,000 PMs a quarter. Would a few hundred or even a couple of thousand (which is more than Pixar needs iirc) really hold things up?

Since Apple is making a big announcement at the National Association of Broadcasters' Convention next month, could this have something to do with it? Since NAB is a meeting of broadcasters, perhaps Apples will be announcing a Renderman/XServe package...

The shipment to Virginia Tech held things up, didn't it??

Now that Renderman Pro Server is realeased and the G5 XServes are being delivered Pixar can start working on the post-Disney projects, whetever they may be. The Incredibles and Cars films have been announced for months now so they have propably allready set up render-farms with non-Mac hardware. Maybe I am mis-calculating and Cars will be the first project made on a Mac. NAB will hopefully provide some answers.

We don't actually know if it did. Apple does have a history of underestimating demand as a rule, and this was no exception. I don't think it was VA's fault.

Yeah it did delay the g5 to customers. Steve jobs said it himself. They moved vt up in the queue and gave them the 1100 g5s that they had.

The renderfarms at pixar don't need to be made up of 1100 g5s although i'm sure they'd love it. who wouldn't.

VA also probably helped delay the Xserves as well since they did get them as replacements for their 1100 G5's...not sure if they got them in same specs or quantities however.

Pixar will get the new G5's no doubt about it and who knows what other companies have the new G5's on pre-order or some gov. agencies.

If Pixar were to migrate to mac it would be a good day for Apple. Can you imagine every Pixar movie ending or beginning with a little *made on a mac* sign (I'm sure Jobs can get it to happen). Every creative professional would be that more likel to buy a Mac. The migration is almost imevitable.

Urgs, don't. Sounds pretty unprofessional to me (like the websites featuring a spinning Apple logo).

Great news. Yay.

In a week of news about product delays and others being pulled from the mac platform, it's good to hear something like this. Double yay!

How does one get Renderman? I looked all over the Pixar site and couldn't actually find out how to purchase it or obtain it.

One has nothing to do with the other.

Why would they wait to start a project just tohave it done on a Mac? That's wacky. The tools are the same, they dont care which hardware its run on. Im sure that Pixar will be a mix of Linux and OSX boxes for years and years.

Cars is the last Disney/Pixar film BTW. They re-negotiated the deal after the success of the early films and it includes Cars. Ratatouille will probably be the first non-Disney Pixar flick.

Really, I'm just curious - but a client of mine (local TV station) might beinterested for commercial development. Thanks - where did you find that?

Unfortunately, the renderman Artist Tools is NOT available for Mac! These are the programs that are the front end to Maya and allow seemless integration of Maya with Renderman, so this is not really very good news at all...

go to https://renderman.pixar.com/

then click "Renderman Products" on the right side
then click "Price List" on the left side

The URL doesn't change when you hit the clicks, must be using frames in their html

Aren't there third party plugin's for OSX that output RIB's (renderman files) from Maya? I'm 95% sure there are.

Besides, if you are able to run renderman, you are able enough to make your own rib outputer.....renderman aint no walk in the park...Its really for serious power users and C++ whizzes and big studios.

agreenster, if you read all the info on pixars web page about MTOR, SLIM, and other Artist Tools, its clear that normal users can achieve results with RM without programming or being a total geek...WITHOUT these tools however, the opposite is true...

Here is a blurb from SLIM's description:

"Slim is a capable tool that provides automated and customized solutions for shading workflow. Slim also functions as a shader generator, allowing RenderMan shaders to be generated interactively, without programming."

And MTOR provides a seemless connection to RM, translating Maya's geometry and shaders into RIB readable format, etc.

So, I guess this is yet another one of those things Mac users will go without, just like Unlimited...

Wow. Nice info. Must say I've never heard of that. :D

EDIT

Wow again--just read the info. This is all new stuff they are churning out over there. This must have all been announced recently.
