Please help me. I got 28K $ from at&t. I live in the US. I took two mobile connections under family plan. One is thru iPhone and other one is using other phone set. Last month, I exchanged the SIM cards in these phones. As I had unlimited data plan in one connection, I thought that there would not be any problem. Further, I didn't get any call or mail from AT&T at that time when I did the same. Recently, I got a call from AT&T mentioning that I am not supposed to exchange the SIM cards and asked me to pay the huge amount I used for the internet access. Please suggest me what I should do now.

Try pre-paid.I applaud your helpfullness.

Op: you need to be rather specific here. It appears you used the Internet while on another phone but were you teathering? You kind of need to look at how you got to $28k then discuss how you can cut the cost of that bill and take out a second mortgage to pay it.

If you have 2 phones with the same provider, the SIM should work with either phone. It's your name on the contract for both phones and you were still using the same data allowance whether it was on one phone or the other.

I'd definitely seek legal advice on this if I was you. I think the way AT&T are treating you is disgusting.

Sounds all to fishy...
Man hit w/$28k bill for watching Football game (http://www.suntimes.com/news/zimmermann/1444692,CST-NWS-Fixer23.article)

Are you aware that unlimited is not unlimited from AT&T or most other wireless carriers. Most limit it to 5gb and reserve the right to charge/discontinue service if they feel you are misusing the service (P2P)

If that were me, I'd be taking it to court if they didn't recall the bill. I would think it would be impossible to use that much data in one month.

Seriously. Did you download 50 movies while overseas?

Really, it is going to take the OP to pony up some additional information. Seeking legal advice may be the way to go, but we know nothing more than this supposed $28k bill from swapping a sim card (something I have done a number of times).

The U.S. is not the U.K.

Capitalism (read: the telecoms) reign supreme, and AT&T couldn't care less if you go over, as long as they get the money when they bill you.

28K in charges is quite insane to be honest. How much data did you use, have you called up AT&T to see if this can be worked out. 28K is a over the top for AT&T, do they really expect their customers to have that kinda money lying around anyways?

We'd need more information.

I've switched sim cards between phones dozens of times without problems with at&t and these phones range from a Razr to some phones at&t would never consider selling.

It doesn't make sense.

Unless this guy put the SIM which didn't have an Unlimited data package into his iPhone and then ragged it for all it's worth with tethering, but, with the way this guy types it doesn't seem like he'd be good for JB'ing and setting that up.

I dunno, I vote troll.

Considering the original poster has yet to respond hours later I would let this thread die, it sounds like a big fat lie. I'm not sure about anyone else here but if I got tagged with almost a 30 THOUSAND dollar bill from a mobile phone company, I would be contacting my lawyer long before I brought it to macrumors........but I guess maybe that's just me.

Agreed. Or call ATT and threaten bankruptcy. The mere mention of Chapter 7 will get enough attention that they will take a good hard look into the fees. My guess is that if there is some mistake, they will clear it up immediately.

On the other hand, if the charges are legitimate, this debt is definitely unsecured. Seek legal counsel regarding bankruptcy proceedings.

i'd have to agree with you..

if this is all true - something will be resolved. it's a cell phone, not a new luxury car.

The UK has the most open telecommunicatioms market in the world. They can call here for something like 1.5 cents a minute. I can't call NYC for that. Their system of caller pays, especially as it applies to mobile phones makes it hard to do direct comparisons. Generally speaking, their nondata rates are pretty good and they handle international service much better - ie, they actually know people go to other countries and don't see it as a profit gouge opportunity.

Unless there's evidence, I vote troll.

If there is evidence, then I vote "foolish person who didn't read the terms and conditions of the service."

On the off chance that this isn't trolling (since there is at least one confirmed case of this happening), the OP is certainly welcome to come back and try again, in a new thread, with more details....
