hi. my friend JR F. told me a hack to change the root password on any computer easily without logging in. ALL CREDIT GOES TO HIM
load single user mode (command+s)
wait for everything to load then type /sbin/mount -uw /
wait a while for everything to load then type sh /etc/rc
then wait a while for everything to load and type passwd root
make sure the above step is spelled "passwd root" not "password"
then type the new password you want for root
confirm it then youre done
once everything has loaded type logout

Insults are against the rules. Thanks for closing your own thread. :D
Google is good for finding out what macros are, and facepalms are good for pointing out silly mistakes.

I just tried this on my 1996 BeBox, and it failed utterly. What am I doing wrong? I must be mistyping. I'll try my old Dell Pentium 2 PC next. I have high hopes.
Edit: damn, no go. I'm trying really hard to type in the commands, but I can't seem to get the computers to accept them at all. I'm now going to try my Nokia N800. It runs a version of Linux, so I'm sure it'll work on that.
Edit: Still no luck, but I really want root access (whatever that is), so I'm gonna try it on my daughter's computer:

Sad that didn't last as long as I had hoped....
