Doctor Q
Apr 1, 2004, 11:11 AM
Note from Doctor Q, to people reading this thread after the fact: At the time I started this thread, the MacRumors moderators were Mr. Anderson, eyelikeart, Rower_CPU, and Mudbug. Others who later served as moderators, including edesignuk and bousozoku, were not moderators then, and I wasn't in the moderator list either. The left side of this post (where the avatar appears) looked like this:http://att.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=39739
And now, on to my original post...

decorum:
n. Appropriateness of conduct or behavior; cooperative or polite actions within a group; propriety

In the interest of keeping the MacRumors Forums an enjoyable community for all members, I'd like to remind everyone of some of the rules.

* The primary purpose of the forums is to allow members to discuss Macintosh news and rumors. The rules are designed to support that purpose.

* Posts that purposely provoke an argument or taunt other members are not permitted and will be deleted.

* Posting when you have nothing to say (spamming) is a disservice to other members. Spam for the purpose of padding your post count is not permitted.

* It's easy to fool the profanity filter by using misspellings. Don't.

* Having an opinion contrary to someone else is fine. Using personal insults, character assassination, threats, or profanity will detract from the point you want to make and will likely get you banned from the forums.

* You may not discuss illegal use of software, places to obtain software illegally, or ways to defeat licensing systems.

* If you start a thread, give it a relevant title so that other members know the topic from the title. Titles such as "Look what I found" not only waste the time of other members when they are not interested in your topic, but they can prevent those who might have an interest from finding your thread. For the same reason, a title such as "Help!" wastes the time of members who can't help you and keeps members who can help you from knowing about it.

A couple of pet peeves of mine:

* If you are eligible for an avatar (members with 500 posts or more), please don't use one that's very similar to that of another member.

* Don't quote the entire text of a large previous post. Edit it down to the part you are replying to. If your post immediately follows the post you are replying to, you may not need to quote it at all.

I'm sure I could go on and on with suggestions, but that's enough for now.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Doctor Q

Thanks Doctor Q, but aren't these points already made in the FAQ?Yes, but a reminder now and then never hurts. People probably look at the FAQ when they are new, and may not remember all the rules months later. Plus some of the recent violations bugged me.

I do think I can be of help, reminding people about the rules. I've been a forum member for 18 months, and I've contributed over 3,000 posts, some of them pretty thoroughly thought out. I may not be a 601 like some of you guys, but I've contributed a lot.

Remember when Doctor Q called himself "Brew"? I think it was in the

Well, look at the profile of member "Brew" over at vbulletin:

Compare the join date with Doctor Q's profile here:
http://forums.macrumors.com/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=12149

Doctor Q joined MacRumors the same day Brew joined vBulletin: 19 Sept 2002!

We already know that Doctor Q is a programmer, and Brew's title at
vBulletin is "coder". And in this thread:
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?p=319196#post319196
he's apparently talking about breaking into vBulletin.

I get the password box and am able to login to the thread but if I try
to post a reply or start a new thread I get this:

You do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one
of several reasons:

1. You do not have permission to access the page that you were trying
to. Are you trying to edit someone else's post or trying to access
administrative features? Check that you are allowed to perform this
action in the Forum Rules.

2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your

Dr. Q couldn't be continuing to abuse powers he doesn't have, using a new account, could he? That be really uncool.

This is an intensely interesting thread, by the way ;) -- seems weird that someone with over 3000 posts would "risk it all" by hacking the forum, though -- you sure it's not a very elaborate April Fool's? Or could someone have hacked the Dr.'s L/P, or be spoofing his IP (if the security alerts are all from his IP range)? Of course, maybe he really did snap because Apple's taking so long to update their pro hardware . That's basically the main reason I'm here, I guess -- but I plan on sticking around after updates :D

Okay feel free to delete this post, now...

just my 2 cents. You called it, übergeek. April Fools!!!

To everyone: No, I'm not banned and I didn't hack into MacRumors. I became a moderator earlier in the month, with the full permission of arn and the moderators. I hope you enjoyed our elaborate April Fool's Day surprise! Quite a performance by our moderators, don't you think?

I'm actually a "mini-moderator", a moderator with a forum-specific assignment. I'm in charge of keeping an eye on the Community Discussion forum, although I can help the other mods where necessary. I hope you'll all help me do my new job by following the rules without my help. Thanks!

Now, to confirm that I'm not fooling you any more, I hope the other mods will confirm my new status for you!

I'll see you all in Community Discussion!

ah, hello, what in the hell are you talking about - two spaces below what?

and how does having a 'dr.' in your forum member name equate with anything serious?

D

I'm note sure why you are using that kind of language with me. I was kind in my post as always. His ( moderator) isn't located in the exact same position as yours, that is why I commented.

I wasn't talking about Doctor Q. I was referring to arn as an MD. Happen to have a lot of experience with physicians. My father-in-law is a physician.

It was my thinking that something was off, meaning a joke when I saw that the listing for moderator was off. I don't remeber the situation but there was also a clever April Fool last year. Was it eyelikart of someone else?

Just don't be stereotyping doctors as "serious", though -- my parents are both docs (so's my step-dad, actually) and I would hardly accuse them of being "serious" people... actually, my dad is exactly like Alan Alda's character from MASH... (looks like him, too)

This could be Arn's idea of an April fool...

I wonder how long it took Dr. Q to convice him?

Guess I was right (almost) all the way.

Haha. Nice prank. :D

It is good to be light hearted. When it comes to the working environment though it does make a difference. Even on Mash when it came to the welfare of the patient they did their job.

wdlove, I want to personally thank you for being a good sport, and also apologize for picking your post to edit while pretending to be a hacker. It was part of the story that the other mods would discover I edited somebody's post. Rather than giving publicity to a post that wasn't appropriate (i.e., one that really was edited for content), we used a post of yours. Anybody who thinks one of your posts really had to be edited for "profanity, personal attack, insensitive remark," as the edit notice says under your post, doesn't know you at all, and that's why we made you part of the joke, admittedly without your permission.

For the record: wdlove's post had no second paragraph and was perfectly polite as always.

The April Fool's joke you are remembering from last year was about the kidnapping of eyelikeart and moxiemike's efforts on his behalf.

edesignuk, you are hard to fool! You kept us on our toes today. Glad to have you around.

I'll leave my "fake-moderator" avatar and wdlove's supposedly-edited post around (if you don't mind, wdlove) so that people reading this thread tonight or tomorrow will understand how the joke progressed.

To all those who continued to think I was of good character as the evidence against me mounted: thanks!

To the rest of you: You're all banned! :)

you need to make yourself a little more succinct sometimes - you have a tendency to say quite a few things that don't make much sense at first while assuming everyone understands the context - that's all.

As for the language, I'd almost like to say what language - I didn't think that it would bother you so? No offense intended, I've used it before.

And like JamesDPS said, you fall into a nice trap by stereotyping anyone. There are so many people out there, you can always find an exception to any tendency if you look hard enough. That's why I base people on individual merit and not a social or professional basis.

Your comment goes nicely with your avatar! Please send my dancing monkeys by Fedex. You wouldn't happen to have any lemurs too, would you?Nope just monkies, bananas, pickles, a pepper, and a drunk penguin.

I could probably get them all in one box, but I don't think you're going to want to open it when it gets there.

And you're right, the phrases "Bite Me" and "Have a drink on Me" will probably be ruined until I switch back to Count Blah -- especially if they view the 250x250 version of the tar in my signature.

I wasn't online much today (3 hours in line at the DMV, freak storm severing my online connection, etc., etc.), so I just read this whole thread from start to finish. I read too quickly to suspect something was amiss with one of wdlove's posts, but I was very upset for a while that Doc Q went postal and got himself banned. I was going to miss him. So I'm glad it was all a joke. I like that MacRumors keeps it off the front page but doesn't abstain entirely from April 1 hijinks.
