What, to fix Windows, to install Windows?
Neither will work, and it's not R on a Mac.

Let me understand...
You are trying to use the system restore disks that came with an old Gateway computer (which had Windows pre-installed) to install Windows on a Boot Camp partition.
Is that correct?

yes. supposedly it's XP media center edition with update rollup 2. that's what it says. I figure I own this copy, and it would take me three weeks to get vista. I'm just trying to be resourceful. by what i can tell it's legal.

I am no expert in these matters... but I don't think it will install except on your Gateway system.
Perhaps someone else will be able to give you a more definitive answer on that.

Actually, no, its not legal. You have a Gateway OEM disk, specific to be installed only on Gateway branded systems.
Secondly, If it says recovery, it means its recovering XP Media Center w/ all the drivers/applications for the Gateway System. That will cause many problems since it would not be a clean install.

The only legal ways to install Windows on a Mac are from a Microsoft banded CD/DVD or from an ISO file downloaded from a Microsoft website - TechNet, MSDN, Connect, Public Beta etc.

ok. so i got a file like that. (.ISO) but i put it in NERO and followed a guide to slipstreaming to a bootable disk to try to make it bootable. It won't work. Mac recognizes it as windows, boots from boot camp assistant with it, then only goes to a black screen with blinking cursor

If you have an authentic Microsoft ISO then you just need to write it to CD/DVD without modification. However, my suspicion is that your ISO is not authentic...

and (hypothetically speaking) if it wasn't then i would have to...
