View Full Version : Good thing the new MBP is so environmentally friendly

I mean, it seems a little odd to fly over my city all the way to Kentucky, then to the opposite side of the country and back to deliver a laptop.

What they saved in packaging and manufacturing the made up for in jet fuel. The hopes are that it actually goes to Calgary next and not some ridiculous detour to some other place.

Did I mention how much I hate UPS? I never get my stuff in a reasonable time...it's always delayed, or missed or whatever.....I should have payed the $18 extra...maybe then it might have actually come to my city.

Yea, that's silly. I'm watching mine now circle the globe. Its not exactly taking a direct rout at all.

Although its a nice ad campaign.

Its aluminum. Which creates so much nasty waste in disgusting, even recycling it.

There is just as much lead in it as any other laptop.

Plastic, plastic, plastic.

It does have some nice environmental features though.

What the hell does Apple have to do with how its shippers move goods?

What the hell does Apple have to do with how its shippers move goods?

Exactly... and what makes you think that what they did wasn't the most efficient use of fuel? They don't ship these things one at a time. It was going out with tons of other packages. Should they have put your laptop on a private jet and flown it straight to Mooseville? Would that have been more environmentally friendly?

Don't you think these parcel services have figured out how to minimize fuel costs? Think about it for a minute before you post.

The reason why Apple goes all environmentally friendly is because they want to be given a good name for the company and to the people who believes in this bullocks.

So wait, let me get this straight. I live in Vermont, USA, Northeastern part of the US.

My MBP went from Shainghi, to Alaska, to Kentucky, to New Jersey, then to Buffalo, New York , then its going to go to Burlington, Vermont, then to my house.

Now your going to tell me that FedEx can't find a more direct route? All those stops.....PULEEZE!!

If You or Apple really cared about the environment you would make sure your package came to your house in the most direct, environmentally friendly way. Like a Packhorse. :D

Y'all need an ounce of common sense. Louisville is a UPS hub, most if not all overseas stuff gets sent there. They have to have it in a central location in order to route. It isn't like they can parachute it out over your house. Fedex does the same thing. UPS is a moneymaking business, if the way they did things was truly inefficient, they would be losing money. If you have a problem with shipping, buy from a local retailer. In any case, quit your bitching!

First of all, like was stated early, shipping routes have nothing to do with Apple. Their point was that the reduction in packaging sizes allowed for a smaller footprint- as in more boxes could fit into the same space than before. It is a small step whose rewards come over time.

Secondly, I don't see what is shocking about the route your laptop is taking to get from China to your front door. Fed Ex/UPS have hubs through which all packages go. This is about efficiency- it doesn't make sense for them to ship one box, by itself, directly to you. The box leaves China and goes to a hub where it is placed with boxes going to the next hub, and so on until it reaches you. This allows them to make the best use out of the plane or truck that delivers the package from place to place. They follow a path from the destination to the delivery location, in your case, from West to East. If the box was going from Japan to Louisville to Anchorage to Mount Hope to Buffalo and to you, then I might see where you're coming from.

Unless you pay for overnight, they will ship your package with dozens of other packages in crates so those groups will fly together; that's cheaper and more economical.

First of all, let me say that the hard on some of you have for this company is hilarious. It's amazing to me how you can take almost any post and find a way to turn it into a reason to defend Mapple even when no one is insulting them.

That said...how about we take a second to explain to you crazed Fanboys what is really being said here.

What the hell does Apple have to do with how its shippers move goods?

Absolutely nothing, yet you decided to go off all half cocked as assume I was putting down your precious company. That goes for the rest of you as well who decided to get your little Mac panties in a bunch because you thought for some reason I was blaming Mapple.

Of course you would say that however because you guys love an excuse to buff up your feathers and talk about Mapple can do no wrong.

Regardless, this has come to be expected on this (and other Mapple forums) site and so I'm no longer surprised when you guys get all crazy even if you suspect someone is talking bad about the company that's paying your student loans, buying you thanks giving dinner, and investing money into your kids education fund.

Secondly, thanks for the lesson in shipping folks. I was unaware that they didn't put my laptop on a plane flown by a pilot for hire and he would land personally in my front lawn on Monday.

But, lets take a second to back track. Canada has a UPS hub as well just so you know so realistically they could have flowing it to the main hub in Kentucky and then flown 2 hours north to the Canadian hub and cut out two trips.

But really....this isn't the point now is it? No, we all know it's not. Perhaps I made a bad assumption thinking that some of you were smart enough to realize that this post wasn't meant to be a catalyst for your rants about UPS flight routes, it was simply a bit of a humorous observation that it would take so many stops and fly right over my city to take a random trip around 4 countries.

But, I was wrong to assume this. I momentarily forgot that there are many members of this forum who love an excuse to argue. I forgot that unless you're talking up Mapple you guys will do anything you can to talk down to the person making the post.

For the record....I understand how UPS and Mapple works. Because some of you decided to be rude and combative I decided to look into it and unfortunately I wasn't able to find out if UPS flies directly to Calgary. I found out they're building a hub here because there has been a huge increase in packages, but I was not able to find out this information.

I can only assume they do have direct or semi-direct flights and all I was saying was that if at all possible, it might have been cheaper to leave the computer in China for a day or two until another, more direct route came available.

Anyway...continue on kids....

It's a great idea to flame and insult the entire community and then report the post of the first person who responds to you.

This entire thread is off topic and should be deleted. UPS's shipping strategies have nothing to do with the MacBook pro. The difference is that I guess I don't get easily offended like you.

is not that weird of a path... well except for the first Canada->New York but that probably is because chances are that there are tons of planes going in and out of NY so its like a very fast stop.

I thought it was a bit of a strange path considering it's supposed to be ending up in Calgary...which it flew right over to get to Kentucky. :)

My thoughts are that it probably has to spend some amount of time in the U.S. for it to be a legal U.S. purchase I'm thinking. It might have something to do with international trade or some jive like that.....

I'm not too sure....It would seem strange that UPS wouldn't have direct flights to Calgary since they are building a giant UPS hub here that is supposed to open in October.

And in the mean time, the packages have to go through other distribution hubs. Unless of course you want your packages showing up to a half built building and no means of doing anything with them, that really makes alot of sense.

Also, if you keep doing that mapple crap this thread is going to be the same as your last one.

They have a hub in Calgary Stinky McGraw, but it's not big enough to currently handle a the load, so they're building a bigger one.

You're right though, good work. Tell me, do they provide you with a decent benefit package there at UPS? You must work for them since you seem to have such amazing knowledge of the company and how it works.

Oh wait.....I see what you're doing, you're arguing something I'm not even arguing about.

Oh...and about the Mapple thing...let me refer you to my dozen or so other posts that explain that...it's ok...I know you love the company, I know you have a Mapple tattoo on your chest close to your heart. I understand, I really do....maybe I should spell it right so you don't tear up every time you have to read it....are you ok...do you need a tissue?

Seriously, you just show how immature you are when you post like this. All I have ever seen you try to do is put down others for liking apple, and think you're amazingly clever with your ranting.

Stop acting like a 12 year old and maybe some people will find you even tolerable.

Any way, I'm not 100% sure how shipping works for massive companies, but I'm reasonably sure that its the shipping company that handles, well, the shipping in its entirety. I don't think Apple has much to do with it really.

Hahah that's an impressive route! I hope you're giving your little guy some rest after that awesome trip. I wonder if customs had anything to do with the excessive stops. It's possible Louisville doesn't handle customs and that's why it went to NY. UPS is notoriously bad about this. I've had stuff come from the west side of me, go east to another major hub, go north to a more major hub, come back down to a lesser hub, then come back to me. Seems to make a giant square around me haha and my city is not small by any means.
As for the whole carbon footprint thing this extra travel is taking away from, I agree. And I can see why people are "defending" apple, because they somewhat tried and ups blew it. Maybe apple should switch to FedEx  But my guess is that is has to do with customs and ups just doesn't want to go through the angst of adding customs to their KY facility. Instead, they just like to make you suffer and wear out your refresh key

No rest for that little dude...he's going to get the full range of tests right out of the box. I have a trip to Arizona then England then back to Vegas for TAM7, I don't have time to let him rest up. :D

I bet there has something more to do with it than just flights as you say. There must be something going on that we're unaware of. It does seem to me like an excessive amount of travel....I have never liked UPS, every time I have to deal with them it's a pain in the butt.

Speaking of a refresh key...it would be nice if UPS added an rss feed! :D

In my opinion, it seems that you really like to generalize and say that every post that doesn't agree with you is defending Apple.

I think that a lot of the posters here are very objective. Yes, UPS has to travel through hubs for efficiency. No, Apple does not control UPS flight routes.
Edit:

What they (Mapple) saved in packaging and manufacturing they (UPS) made up for in jet fuel.

Try being more objective and stop having this disposition that everyone who doesn't agree with you is a mindless drone brainwashed by Apple.

I don't care that people disagree with me, what I care about is that people seem to have no ability to deal with it appropriately . They think nothing of writing a nice solid spaz about something I say in a topic that has nothing to do with anything.

AND, in the case I was misread, instead of saying something polite like, "I couldn't help but notice you seemed to have confused this with that....I'm sure you're aware, but for those who don't..."

If I was wrong or whatever then a nice polite response would probably go a long way, but instead I get stuff like,

Considering the content, you stated in your very first post:

I also call McDonalds "Mick Dicks" or "MickyD's" and on occasion "Rotten Ronnies" yet I still eat there...why because it's gross, but better than cooking a roast some nights.

There are times when I call Wal-Mart "Wally World" or "White Trash Mart" or even "Balls-Mart"...yet I still shop there because sometimes it's cheaper to buy bargain bin DVD's than it is at Best Buy.

Sometimes I will call Microsoft, "Microsuck" or "Windoze" or "Bill Gates sucks my balls with IE6, yet...I still buy Windows products and like the OS for the most part.

Guess what this means....it means that just because I buy a product from a company from time to time doesn't mean A) I agree with everything they do b) care and c) go out of my way to defend that company.

So far, I have had bad experience with Mapple, and I have seen the same reality as they made fun of on that episode of the Simpsons, so for my own amusement I am calling it Mapple. In fact, the back of my iPhone has a little Mapple logo on it....why...not because I think the Simpsons is overly clever, but it's amazing how much offense some people take to it....you would have thought I insulted their religion or something....which I am sure it is to some.

People need to be reminded it's just a company selling computers. Watching youtube videos of people peeing their pants at a Mapple store opening, or listening to people get completely insane if you question the company, it shows me that if it's so bad that people are insulted by me calling it Mapple, then there is something totally wrong here.

Watching youtube videos of people peeing their pants at a Mapple store opening, or listening to people get completely insane if you question the company, it shows me that if it's so bad that people are insulted by me calling it Mapple, then there is something totally wrong here.

i love Apple and Steve's my God, so i think you should show some respect, apologize, and **** to be honest.

As for Apple being environmentall unfriendly, who cares if your computer took a trip around the world? Im sure Steve has a good reason for it, so just believe my friend, believe
Oh and also heres proof Apple are completely clean and green:

You see the fresh, wet green grass? Apple cares for that grass, so much infact that it decided to use it in one of its adverts. If thats not green environmental dedication then i dont know what is.

The funny thing is....I don't even know if you're kidding or not because there are freaky people out there who actually think this way....and it's scary.

Well when I said people, I really meant your mom, but I didn't wanna say anything.

Why do you feel the need for personal insults?

I think we'll answer that when we figure out why you insist on continuing to post nonsense in this topic.

I can't provide an answer to why you don't get it....well I guess I could but you might not like it. You are right and very clever however I did state it was a stupid topic...guess that means the rules don't apply.

I think you're not altogether that swift, but I'm still replying to you...so I guess that I can understand where you're coming from.

You know what bothers me the most about that video? The part where the Mapple employees are clapping as they come in the door....it's like it takes some kind of talent to shop there.

That...and I wanna punch that girl in the face. She must have a sad, oh so sad life if she gets that excited walking into a store.

The end however is the worst, "Wooo you walked into a store then came out!!!"

I guess when you set your goals in life low, it's pretty easy to get excited. "Yay, they're gonna take all our money and we can spend our days on forums complaining about our products unless someone comes along who actually doesn't seem to buy into the hype then well freak out on them...woooooot!"

belvdr, way to quote the entire post bud...let me guess, you were one of the ones clapping in line at the Mapple store opening. I think we've established your level of intelligence.

Thanks, and no, unfortunately I wasn't there.

Who is this "we" you refer to?

At any rate, when I clicked Quote, there was only one picture. When it posted, it was a bit overboard.

I've always wondered this, but are Apple's computers really that environmentally friendly?

They go on and on about how little mercury and lead is in the product, but I explicitly remember an Eu directive back in say 2004 or 2005 that said any new products after a certain date must contain this amount of lead and mercury.

If PC manufactures complied with that then I can't see why Apple isn't any more environmentally friendly then Dell or Sony is.
