To get this one out of my Pie Colluseum and in true Canadian style, I'm starting a thread specifically for the redneck versus redcoat hullabuloo that's taken over so many discussions.

Winky will be standing by with a full load.;)

He he! Winky's firing blanks again! :D :D

American's are by and large ignorant of the rest of the world. How else would you come to the idea that you could beat us down, simply by posting such a thread as this? Do i need to post my favourite map of the world again, to illustrate my point?

:( I don' like U guys anymore.

Hey... but wait a minute... I'm originally from Ypres (Ieper). We have a big bunch of British cemeteries over there (that are actually British Ground) (World War I, you know). And there are always many, many British tourists in Ypres (they get plastered rather easy - aren't used to Belgian Beer).

So can I play with you guys now?
Pretty please?

Right, that does it. I'm bringing on the conversation-stopper: http://homepage.mac.com/schwuliduck/.Pictures/america.jpg

You should try coming over to the UK and actually drinking in a real pub. Those cheap imitations you guys have over there are pathetic, and come nowhere near to doing justice to a brilliant institution. As for the temperature..... perhaps if you'd drink it up without letting it sit for ages then it'd taste good. Beer from the tap is quite simply superior to any of that bottled crap you guys think is beer. ;)

Edit: I hope everyone's being entertained here. You are more than welcome to join in if you so wish :)

Would you want to live in the same country as Cathrine Zeta Jones and her old man ? That poor guy (Michael Douglas), just got over his sex addiction problem and now he's married to someone who could quite easily cause one :-) It'd be like taking a vow of celebacy and shacking up with salma hayek.

Well for those of you who don't know what football is -

I love the U.S., as it is my mother country, but when it comes to rock 'n roll, only one thing needs to be said...

(Edited 2 hours later - I meant the guitar, not necessarily the band - you can't fit the American flag on a guitar without leaving out some states... and it just doesn't look as cool as the Union Jack.)

Their first two albums are among the best rock & roll albums of all time. They haven't been quite the same since, but they're still a fantastic live band and draw bigger crowds than they ever have.

You're probably right, I shouldn't have said "all," but ohh man...

- The Beatles
- The Stones
- The Who
- The Kinks
- Radiohead
- Pink Floyd (I personally don't like them, but many do)
- Sex Pistols
- The Clash
- The Jam
- Cream
- David Bowie
- Led Zeppelin
- Oasis (if you only look at their first two albums :))

I will admit, America has some greats, too. Hendrix, Dylan, and... umm... hmm... :) The rest is either relatively poor rock & roll or it isn't rock & roll at all - it's either this grungey self-loathing stuff, or it's nu-metal or whatever. All rock, no roll, and I said rock 'n' roll. :)

This thread is GREAT so far... I only hope it doesn't get closed. :)

I am by no means a Royalist, but, they are a big part of our history (yes, that’s right, Great Britain has a long, long history, unlike the U.S :p) and a major tourist attraction.
There are many places all over the world that would love our traditions and history.

This is a good little story…

An American bought what he thought was Tower Bridge for a lot of money some years back, although, he referred to it as London Bridge…BIG mistake.
When ‘London Bridge’ turned up in pieces in the states to be reassembled it wasn’t what he was expecting, he had got London Bridge, NOT Tower Bridge, the two are VERY different.
Tower Bridge is a magnificent bridge that spans the River Thames, while London Bridge is just some rotten old bridge.

He was so embarrassed by his stupidity that he rebuilt London Bridge out in the middle of nowhere on a lake in Arizona, where the fewest people possible would be able to see it :D

:p

by and large, we are an ignorant people...but for a country that has been around less than 250 years, we have given our share of contributions to the world

rock and roll, hollywood, most of the fortune 500 which provides jobs for many outside of the usa, and the spread of worldwide sports such as basketball and baseball

in the next several centuries to come, we will find our place in the world and develop a culture...i know these things take time...a lot of time ;-)

At the moment i feel america is too young to really have developed its' own identity. It's still too much of a mixture of different cultures, with bits and bobs added by each nationality of imigrant. I suspect that, as you say, in the next couple of centuries that will begin to change. It'll be nice to see you developing something of your own for a change ;)

I'm just kidding of course. I don't need a whole list of the advances/inventions/etc we have the US to thank for :)

sport

american football, only played by americans so they can't lose.
you yanks seem to rate the excitement of a sport by how many points can be scored. american football, play is stopped all the time, its like a giant tennis game, one team scroes then the other, basket ball is even worse, they made it easy to score baskets so that there would be high score at the end of the game. anyway basketball was invented by an irishman, thats why the forwards are called backs and the backs are called forwards.

Their country works much better than the UK? Ha! That's a laugh. Did you keep track of their latest elections? Jean-Marie Le Pen, a far-right politician, came close to being elected as president of the country. Not good.

france would be a rich ass country if they didn't spend all their money and manufacturing on white flags just so that every citizen would have a primary and a backup "surrender device" as they call them

as for other responses i want to make in this post.

the ireland/england situation is indeed sad. similar to israel/palestine in the whole loss of life for silly land deal...

alex- hollywood doesn't make many movies i like. or apparently that you like. but that's not the point. the movies make tons of money here and worldwide whether us smarter folks like them or not. and also, i don't like any of those british bands you named. so i guess i don't fit the norm. i won't take the time to think up "clever" names to make fun of them like your jerry "suckheimer" one. good work.

america doesn't have a fabled history: yeah, so? i mean, it's not like the history of where someone lives make the people any better. and you just want to deny we have any history because at the very beginning of our history was, well, that war... and we all know you want to forget the outcome of that.

exactly... it's because the greedy europeans that most americans are ancestors of came over here, raped, killed, and stole the land of the native americans... they are easily tossed aside onto reservations and other poor land now because our ancestors killed so many of them that now there are very few left.

On multiculturality-
One of America's greatest strengths lies is its diversity. While some may say it leaves us without a cohesive national identity, I think i gives us an even stronger global identity than anywhere else in the world.

The world is getting smaller everyday, and it's becoming impossible to avoid intermingling of cultures. Some decry the loss of the old times, and the old ways...but those no longer work in today's society. The USA, as always, is a pioneer in this arena.

those images do give us a good start but it takes many centuries to get that identity

look at any european or asian country...look at the mediterranean or africa...everybody has great and amazing stuff in their present and past

america is off to a good start and we have not even come close to reaching our peak, but that is still centuries away, folks

give me a national identity three hundred years from now and with those attached images, then the usa can come to the table with a culture second to none

I don't want to make this overly-serious, but this is an extremely simplistic view of the colonisation of the New World by the Old, and as a historian I have to object.

There were obviously Europeans who tried to exploit the native indians in a calculating and ruthless manner, but there are numerous signs in the seventeenth century of a concerted desire among many of the English colonies to achieve a measure of cultural integration between white settlers and amerindians, George Thorpe and Thomas Elliot being two examples of individuals who did a great deal of good.

And that doesn't even scratch the surface. You can easily get into anthropological models of native American and Anglo-American behaviour and see that to an extent there were elements wishing to conquer the 'other' present in both cultures by the time of the English colonial adventure.

Just felt the need to point out that you hadn't got the whole picture, jello

I have to add my $2 worth here... Basketball was invented in the US, in MA if I remember my history correctly. IF the person inventing it was Irish, it was Irish/American. :p

What did you Brit's do in the first ~250 years your country was around?? Did it make the world any better??? How about your own country?? At least we had the balls to stand up to a tyrant and kick him out. :p

Also, I am fairly certain that Easter Island is in the Pacific Ocean, not part of the UK.

I also seem to remember how your once mighty empire has been reduced to a mere shadow of it's former self... The list of countries that USED to be colonies is not all that short.... do you have any left?? :p :D

One more thing, when we put our minds to it (as a country) there is almost nothing we cannot accomplish. With the resources we have, along with the ingenuity of the population (and the resident geniuses) we are a force to be reckoned with.

i know the dutch attempted an almost successful attack by sea but got defeated in the end

and in 1940, germany almost posted a successful air attack but were somehow defeated by the lesser numbers of the RAF and this stands as one of the most amazing victories in the history of warfare

germany could have effectively won world war II if they had occupied england

even the us would not be able to purge germany from england, and then europe and still fight the japanese in the pacific at the same time

the us would have then bowed out of the war with no losses

the isolationists in america were a very strong group and the anti-war message was there from world war I with veterans walking around on one limb or no limbs!

japan would not have attacked pearl harbor if germany had been successful in their air campaign for britain

it was one of the key reasons that japan attacked pearl because england won in the battle for britain

The USA, as always, is a pioneer in this arena.

agreed! who said diversity is a set back? i think diversity is what all countries should strive for. America is indeed the king here. Its the wave of the future and once again America is ahead of its time. Thats Americas Identity!

And that doesn't even scratch the surface. You can easily get into anthropological models of native American and Anglo-American behaviour and see that to an extent there were elements wishing to conquer the 'other' present in both cultures by the time of the English colonial adventure.

Just felt the need to point out that you hadn't got the whole picture, jello

you're right, i dont' have the full picture. but then again, neither does anyone who learns history in america (that's the only first hand experience i'm going by). we celebrate columbus as a hero of sorts. i think that's bad because not only did he not really discover this place first, he also did tons of terrible things. i'm not saying everyone was bad, of course not. that's how things always are, some good some bad. but to place at least one guy who was not good in such a high esteem is not right in my opinion. so i think that a more thorough history should be taught, at least to high schoolers.... rather than trying to act as though everything was all great for america... thanks for the response. it's always good to learn.

don't you get it, it was brits (and others) that started america to begin with. so of course we "used" that history and experience... should we have started over?

i'm not historian, but from what i remember most accounts point to the middle east area as being where humans were first getting they groove on? if not, sorry, but regardless, we are all descendants from the same folks at the root, so you are just "using" their culture and experience as much as we are using yours...

krossfyter- i agree with your last statement about people wanting to emulate american culture and whatnot. we don't have historical culture as much, but we have what most others want here and now. however- i don't think that's totally why the muslims (some) hate us.. i tend to think it's our involvement in the middle east..but other than that... preach on brotha man!

sooo, let me get this straight. UK advocates are saying Brit Rocks because, you are still under monarchy rule, and a Parliment (which was a band last time I checked) that still has to wear funny little hats.

Well as far a Canada goes, I think they are all a little confused, "Gee Ranger Rick, which language should I use?"

and the States, If we could get off our couches and out of our SUV's, I'd say we would find we are absolutely pathetic too.

I'm so glad none of us are perfect, though I'm happy to be where I am!

I design town's, or at least I am beginning to get into town design. I don't mean building codes and the like, I mean my firm and I will be designing several full functioning towns.

The whole Idea will be to park your car and either walk or bike where ever you need to go. Put the garages behind your house/townhouse/apartments and off an alley.

cleaner air, walkability and a real place to live with a sence of community. Think about it, every place in America looks the same, I say we need to get educated and rebuild our nation.

We are wealthy because we build cheap crp and sell cheaper crp. (just look at Dell and compaq etc...that's why I bought the only decent machine made here in the states, a mac)

anyhoot, I could bore you for hours, so ending my rant now. yes I dislike the SUV and our gas policies too.

that's awesome that you do that... curious about 2 things: 1, where are you designing the towns? 2. what is "crp"?

i once saw a map of a made up city where instead of having a "central park" it was surrounded by nature and had city stuff on the inside... but it was all about having grass and trees as part of the city. of course, this is not the same with "towns" as they don't have that problem really....

my older, smarter bros are big into efficient housing design and urban sprawl and all that. i just pretend to know what i am talking about, though it interests me greatly.

we should start another thread, though I think it is realevant to the US vs UK posts. due to the livabilty issues we have here in the states. We "get" to drive to work everyday, most people in Europe have better options.

1-here in Alabama

2-crp is actually crap, kind of like wrz is warez or things of that like.

as far as sprawl goes....many low cost builders do not realize they are spending more money on your typical subdivision than you would on (hold on be right back, or email me sherroddrawings.com)

Superiority in culture, eh? :)

I agree that the US does have a lot of culture, and I agree that a lot of it is wonderful, but I think a lot of the US "culture" spreading around the world is excessively materialistic, consumerist, & commercialist, with personal liberty taken to a detrimental extreme. That's just a generalization of course, and it's certainly not a universal rule, but I don't think it's anything to be proud of... the French boulangeries / street markets being eaten alive by McDonald's, ADM, and mega-supermarkets to name one example.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is, a pervasive culture does not necessarily mean a "good" culture. Y'all can slag off France here, but I admire the French for being so stubborn about the retention of their culture and fighting off foreign influence. There are many very smart and progressive ideas floating around in France that would be difficult to implement in other, more US-like (capitalist, individualist), countries. The UK is interesting because it's kind of in the middle... or something.

well put and thought through there...When people in my profession design a "mixed use" building (or any building for that matter) that would mould to the "New Urbanists" ideals and a chain store moves in, we always take the stance that...

"Hey, let 'em move in and pay for a great building, when oil sky rockets they'll go under because they are not set up to handle that problem"

or simply don't eat/buy there. They'll leave and someone better will come along, and get a better deal on the suite because the previous tenant went under.

I feel, America is still trying to figure out who we are, I don't mean Andy Warhal kind of a country, but as living arrangements go, we have made a terrible bed to sleep in.

please feel free to correct me where my OPINION may be wrong ....but i feel that America does have a rich culutre and is rather deep. the strong point in american culture is that its made up of a lot of other cultures mixed together.
no other country can really claim that. people say "well it doesnt have its OWN culture" or whatever. well i think our own culture is a mixture of others...

America reminds me of a character out of the game "Cosmic Encounters" w/edict cards or something like that. Where the Alien race uses its opponents powers as its own.

I agree that America has a culture, it just doesn't all fit in too well in a sense of community.

I guess in France they would understand better, giving most of the population is French (though they seem to have some complex with American cowboys)

How about Canada? There are two obvious & major differences in the population there, where one is prominatly French, the other speaks English, I would think that's a bit Pzichophrenic.

Very interesting question. Arguably the Anglo-Saxons created England as we know it in the last few reigns before the Norman Conquest when some loose unity was created out of the various kingships of Mercia, Wessex etc.

But probably a better point to start looking at England is in the twelfth century when key beauracractic measures like the Chancery and the Exchequer were created in a modern form under Henry I and his right-hand-man Roger of Salisbury.

Any other historians here will probably have strong opinions on this one...

you're an educated brit, so tell me why your best boxer lennox lewis sounds like some educated gentleman and still is the top boxer

our american boxers, and most football players and other assorted "tough" jocks i have met in the states sound like uneducated thugs

is lennox really smart or does he just sound smart to me...i lived on the west end and went to london u so i got used to hearing the educated speak compared to the average bloke at the pub playing darts getting hammered

He has developed a powerful left hook to go along with his monotonous left jab and straight right hand. He has real power, and is very hard to hit because of his experience, strength, height, and Sonny Liston like arms. The problem I have with him is that he fights like someone trying to hide under a bed. He still can't duck under a punch and is way too stiff. He fights too much like Trinidad.

however i want to see him finnaly up against some real opponents.

that is an impressive record...i think lennox lewis is getting old and has seen better days though but he did beat tyson (also over the hill age-wise)

holyfield is gone and so it foreman

holmes is going to do an exhibition fight but that can't be pretty

maybe vladimir will be uncontested by the time he reaches the top

only late-ali, at age 30-36, had something to give at his age...and even then, some boxing experts claimed he was way, way past his prime

all great fighters peak at some point and then go down

overall, boxing a busy schedule and defending titles is a young man's sport

i just got back from lennox's site...he's been boxing for 25 years...longer than many of his opponents have been alive

he will be 37 in just over two months and he seems in better shape than when ali was 36 and overwight and puffy looking the third time he won his title

wouldn't it be a kick to see lewis stay on top into his 40s...it still won't happen

foreman came out of retirement in his 40s for a brief shot at the top and then disappeared again...there is no way he could have won the title like he did at his age in his 40s if he had fought continuosly...he would have ended up like ali, or worse

being 37 and having won his first major amateur title near 20 years ago, lewis should hang up his gloves soon one day...this isn't golf and i wouldn't even call boxing a sport

...it is fighting and probably more brutal than most would ever want to endure...grown men cry and even pass out before the opening bell is rung as in the case with fights against the great oscar de la hoya
