Just log into the iPhone dev portal and enter your device ID there and it should unlock it.

No. You shouldn't have it. We're not helping.

I certainly won't risk my account and good standing to help someone I don't know fix something that they should have known better about.
The only suggestion I do have is to try and follow the guide kicking about on here for downgrading to 2.2.1.

As I said your best bet is to try downgrading (even though Apple specifically state that downgrading is not supported).

I know. My answer is still the same. I am not going to risk my account to help someone I don't know.

MacRumors.com is not the best place to seek this kinda help. Try googling something like 'iPhone locked after upgrading to OS 3.0'. The most I can do for you is retrieve your iPhone UDID that is required for activation.
1. Connect iPhone to Mac
2. Launch System Profiler (e.g. via Spotlight)
3. Under Hardware click on USB
4. Under USB High-Speed Bus click on iPhone
5. Serial Number is your UDID (the longest code)
Good luck!

Just supposing I had a "friend" just joined the iphone Dev Programme who was silly enough to upgrade to 3 before getting his device ID.
I know there are two ways to get this 40 digit number. iTunes and Xcode. But as I've (sorry, meant "he's") already upgraded the iPhone it means that as he can't activate the iPhone, he cannot use iTunes to get the device ID. It appears to me that XCode is part of the 2.15 GB developers kit. Is there another way rather to find the device ID rather than download all 2.15 GB of the developers kit just to get the Xcode installed?
EDIT
ah.. thanks Pooshka, you must have answered as I was composing my question..

It won't matter even if you do find out your device ID as far as I am aware as your device ID needs to be associated with a developer profile.

Which is why I needed the device ID. To associate the iPhone with a developer profile, having joined the iPhone Dev programme.

Sounds like the best bet is to put your phone in DFU mode and restore back to 2.2.1.

Has anyone figured out a way to activate the iphone after downgrading from 3.0 to 2.2.1? Probably going to just have to wait for 3.0 jailbreak. I downgrade to 2.2.1 per the instructions ive read online but I dont get service. I am an att user and tried both setting up as a new phone and restoring from backup. Im sure its because of the newer baseband. Any ideas?

I installed Beta 3.0 an in ITunes , I get a message saying unable to complete activation.
Was I supposed to register phone with Developers site first?
Now what do I do?
Please help.

You were supposed to not pirate the beta software since you aren't a developer.
Now you're supposed to realize you made a mistake and deal with the fact that you screwed up your phone.

Yes especially since there is a forum for talking about iPhone hacks. I say ban 'em. Do a little research people before you install stuff. I haven't even tried to download 3.0 and I know enough that the phone UDID needs to be associated with a developer account.

Ehh you can't say it's technically "stealing".....you can't buy it
Some people have huge boners in their pants for all the features of 3.0 and figure they can find a way to have it now rather than wait. It sure is tempting but most of us know better.

To get the software you have to be a developer for that you pay.

This is like some shady looking character approaching you in a dark alley with a bottle of liquid called "GoFast" and telling you to put it in your car's gas tank so it'll go faster. Wouldn't you google "GoFast" before pouring it in your gas tank? The internet is chock full of warnings about 3.0 and its requirement.
On the flip side, I would hope that anyone creating a torrent of 3.0 would include an nfo file stating its prerequisites. Of course, some people would still just pull the trigger without reading that...

If he is not registered in the iPhone Developer Program and did not download the 3.0 beta directly from the dev portal website http://developer.apple.com/iphone/, then yes, he did steal it.

Exactly, a developer pays $99 for all of the features taht are included. Being able to access and successfully test 3.0 is part of that, so if you didn't pay for the sdk then yes, you are stealing.

I have the same problem. One of my new beta testers is on Windows Vista and I sent him 3.0 and he updated before I could get his Device ID.
I can find no way to get the Device ID off Vista. I can for XP but not in Vista. Anyone know how??
