I think if the 1st generation iPhone cannot receive MMS or use the bluetooth sterio option cause the hardware/software cannot update, then Apple should do something about it!!!! The 1st generation iPhone purchasers are the ones that gave Apple such success to begin with!!!!!!

Sure they should just give First Generation users new iPhones....

there are plenty of old devices that apple chooses not to give new functionality when they easily could. eg, more multi touch gestures in MB/MBP. voice over in all the ipods ...
Its just what apple does to get you to upgrade. regardless of who was an early adopter.

I am not asking for a new iPhone, but I think the 1st generation should be able to take their iPhone to an apple store and get what ever upgrade so that the 3.0 is fully functional!!!

But they are. They'll be more than happy to sell you a new phone. :D
The iPhone 2G firmware is different to the one for the 3G. What makes you think that firmware 3.0 for 2G is not fully functional?!

NO. This is moronic. Tech. Changes. Get over it.
I'll take my original Apple ][ in to an Apple Store and DEMAND that they replace it with a 2.93GHz Gainestown Mac Pro and see what they say.
Then I'll report back to you.

Which reminds me I must bring my 1908 - Ford Model T back to the garage for them to fit the new Ford Focus RS engine and mod cons, because after all I was one of the ones that gave them so much success.
Sorry for being sarky. But if your not willing to pay for a product works, maybe your using the wrong product.

This case though isn't really a matter of tech, it's a matter of Apple wanting you to upgrade. The 1st gen hardware is more the capable of sending/receiving MMS.

Kind of amazing how people want something for free that they never paid for in the first place. You bought the phone knowing what it was and was not capable of. Get over it...

In the UK 1st gen contract users got a chance to early upgrade to the 3G for the launch date.
Dont make it sound like apple is the only company in the world to force people to upgrade.

The new iPhone OS 3.0 is available to all registered iPhone developers today as a free beta. Full release to customers will be this summer. OS 3.0 will be free for all iPhone users and a $9.95 upgrade for all iPod touch users. Most features will be available for the first-generation iPhone, although hardware limitations will prevent some features, such as MMS and stereo Bluetooth, from being added to those devices. Meanwhile, Apple also revealed that Bluetooth support can be activated in the 2nd generation iPod Touches.

All I am saying is that it would be nice for apple to take care of the 1st gen since they are the ones that made the iPhone so successfull.

You don't know that. While it has proven it is possible by jailbreak, that does not mean the hardware can handle it in the way it has to in order for apple to do a system wide rollout to millions of units. I doubt they said lets just leave this out so they upgrade, likely it would have taken a workaround or there were other factors that made it more effort than they deemed worthy, or even AT&T wanting that data to go over their 3g networks as much as possible. kindof sucks for the rest of the world if the latter is the case though, but I doubt they spent more effort in disabling working code so you would upgrade.
Get over it, your junk is almost 2 years old by now, I expect my computers to have 3 year lives, with the last year being where it becomes obvious it is time to move on. If you think of the price you pay for a gadget as more of a subscription to it for 2 years things like this will piss you off less. If so, the price you get on ebay for it when the new model comes out is a bonus.
For the people pissed about no video when cyncorder can record less than SD at 15 fps, haha, you really think apple would associate video of that quality with their name? I think iMovie actually mocks you if you try and edit anything less than DV.

So what exactly do you want Apple to do to "take care" of 1st gen iphone users? Physically upgrade the hardware on your iphone?

I am over it. I think the OP is stupid. I'm just saying i think this is something apple has done to get us to want to upgrade. We all know that the early 2008 MBPs can have 4 finger gestures with a quick little hack, yet Apple isn't going to give it to us officially. Same thing.

Think of it this way, maybe the new iphone in June-ish will have some killer feature that you want, so an upgrade is in the cards for you. Then you can give your iPhone edge to a husband or loved one.
(or sell it and get the money for a new iphone upgrade since I believe the edge iphones still get a pretty penny on ebay (or has that changed.?)

This sense of entitlement baffles me. Let's get this straight, YOU did not make the 1st iPhone a success. APPLE made it a success by making a stellar product that was a huge step ahead of what other phone makers were even dreaming of doing. (Please stow your MMS and copy and paste arguements...it's about the interface/app store). It's not like you bought your phone to help Apple out or anything. You bought it because you liked the phone...and you got exactly what you paid for. You will not get anything other than that.
So, YOU do not deserve a thing for free. APPLE deserves to make a profit for a great product and they are now making an even better product that more people will buy. Your phone works just as good (better actually) as the day you bought it, so please stop feeling like you are entitled to something for the rest of your life because you bought one stinking product. There aren't any handouts in the consumer world.
Now, could someone please help me down from my soap box? My back hurts.

Ah, I love the internet. When all else fails, resort to name calling, awesome. I'll take that as a sign that you can no longer logically support your sense of entitlement.
Enjoy your weekend. Sorry we don't see eye to eye on this one (see how you don't have to name call...) You can wish and gripe for handouts all day, but I've got to get back to work now; gotta go earn what I want ; ).

The thing is, most other cell phones never get updated.
Many of them are never even issued updates at all (beyond a bug or security fix), and the few that do get them are usually done only at the carrier stores, or you have to track down the software yourself on some website and figure out how to run it yourself, which most folks never bother doing.
The fact that the iPhone checks iTunes and updates itself is unique, the fact that the 1st gen phone is about to get its second major update is REALLY unique!
So you're complaining that you're not getting as many updates as 3G owners, but you're getting far, far more updates than 90% of other cell phone users ever get.

This thread has valid content, but the OP has chosen repeatedly to make offensive and rude responses, so I think we're all done here.
