the most frustrating thing about it is that the us played much more dominantly. they got a couple free kicks and just one of them happened to go in.

and that damned german guy's arm..... kept the us from tying it.

ahh well. it sure has caught my attention, but then again, i already liked watching. so let's hope it gets the rest of the country excited.

ps. did the brits get a refill of chocolates too?

edit: i just saw the "nooooooooo" thread and indeed they did.. good job.

first they have to recover here from all the money they have lost from betting on the wrong team :p

And then they have to import 80 % of the players to make a decent team :D

It's by no means unheard of. You'll get games where one team has a single shot on goal, and scores, and the other team peppers the posts and gets nothing. It's part of what makes it such fun: you can never be quite certain of the outcome :)

Look at germany vs. ireland in the group stages. Germany thought they had the game in the bag, and then ireland come back and equalised in the 92 minute of play. That was a joy to watch :D

Ha! How did you know? Yes, i was supporting the germans :p (iGav, verbose and the others will crucify me for that :D)

The funny thing about this is that the US is pretty ambivilent towards soccer. It is just now beginning to be a sport of any serious consideration. It used to be that kids played US football, basketball or baseball. Now, there are soccer camps and leagues everywhere, and schools have teams now. Plus, there is a pro league for kids after they get done with school.

If we played better than the Germans now, just think how we'll be when the kids who are coming up in the system get older.

Yep, when will the world learn. Don't wake the sleeping giant. While we didn't care, all you little countries got your cup victories. Better enjoy it while you can, because once we set our minds to it, this will be yet again, just another sport where American atheletes take over. IMHO at least.

For all of those out there that think that American Football is too slow, or not a difficult sport. Go strap on the 25 pounds of pads that one has to wear. Work out all summer, and be the most fine tuned athletes out there.

Then get your A$$ out on that field at 11:30 on a Saturday morning in 110 degree heat with a 100% humidity, so it feels like 130. Now for the next four hours you are going to either beat the guys brains in in front of you, or he is going to beat yours. all the while you have to remember over 200 play combinations and you have to remember the defensive or offensive sets of the the other team.

Oh,
And Leon. The Defensive end for the other team has something for you. You see, Leon is 6'8, 345 lbs. He benches 650lbs and runs a 4.6 forty. He wants to rip you friggin head off.

I would love to see the guys in soccer try to play football. That would be funny. But not as funny as watching the looks on the soccer fans faces if they actually played the game after about 2 quarters.....

I would love to see the guys in football try to play soccer. There would be probably only the GK left after 10 minutes, because they all saw red already! Not to mention that they would be too clumsy with all their muscles to stay in control of the ball... :D

Also they probably all would get heart-attacks, because they are not running a lot in a football games, but in soccer you are in permanent movement. :)

WTF. Dude, most of the wide recievers in football are world class distance runners. All football players run constantly during the training season. Go watch a two a days practice. yes, I played soccer, and foot ball, and football is much harder on the body. Here is why.

1) Far more physical. Not only are you running, but you are having to use your body in ways that you don't in soccer. You have to use strength. Soccer is endurace. Big difference.
2) Far more technical. Get you hands on an NFL playbook. Nuff said.

Basketball is far more difficult than soccer. Soccer is the worlds way to not feel inferior to the US in all other sports. Where is the worlds basketball teams that can compete? Football? Baseball? You guys have soccer and some good tennis players. OMG. The worlds best athletes are soccer players. BS.

Oh, and yes, the Winter Olympians were rather good this year. In fact, I think they won the medal count did they not? I agree with Rower too. A german talking about our guys popping pills. That is the funniest thing I have heard in a long time.

Virtually every nation has had issues with cheats in sport. The US is no exception, neither is germany, the UK, france, canada..... People like Michael Johnson (for example) didn't dominate because of drugs. He had (among other attributes) a radical running style, which gave him a huge advantage over others.

:D Just by accident you just talk about sports that are only very popular in the US and just whatever sports in the rest of the world... what a surprise that you are better in them.

Compared to ther countries the US sucked in the winter olympics. Compare the size of the country (citizens) when you want to make comparison in the medal count.

Those doping scandals in Germany were from the time of the GDR and not from the FRG. I raised in the FRG so they don't count for me. And I also talked about nowadays. I am pretty sure that in all the other top athletes were doped a swell back then, they just didn't get caught, because there country didn't go down the drain

Agreed, but still in a lot of cases the top athletes are just top because they pop pills and are doped. And the better the drugs are the better the athlete becomes. I know that in Germany we have very strict doping controls for athletes. And in the US? (That's a serious question!)

Maybe it isn't the country that we should be arguing about, maybe should be the combination of talents and diversity, as well as our successes in the past/present. I'm sure I, as an American, have too much pride in my country, but then again, maybe some of our German immigrants brought that trait over.

I don't want to make this a poilitical discussion, but exactly that attitude is pissing a lot of people of. I doubt that you know enough about the rest of the world to claim being the best country in the world. Maybe one of the best countries, but that depends a lot of the point of view, don't you think?

Actually, yes I do know enough to turn this into a political discussion if you choose. Perhaps you could start a new thread so that this one doesn't go off topic. You will find that you are not up to the challenge my young padawan learner. Lets see. Mac's and Politics v.3

Oh, and it is the worlds misconception of the US that is the problem. Find people who have really been here. They don't want to go back to their countries. They do everything they can to stay. Can't find that many Germans that feel that way about France can you? Unless of course it is Alsace / Lorraine.

edit;
Oh, and for the medal count. Man, you are right. we got our A$$es handed to us on a silver platter. Oh, and not all of us over here take to kindly to being called a yankee. ;)

Before the match started, everyone i was watching the game with (about 6 germans) gave their predictions. They ranged from 2-0, up to 5-0 (one of them said 8-0, but i hope she wasn't serious :p). They were just too cocky, taking it for granted that they would win. I'm glad they were more than just lightly shocked :D

This current germant team has yet to come up against a recognised force in world football. They are a relatively poor team (in terms of quality and ability). That's why it was "only one goal". Same in the last round too. 1-0 victory, with a goal in the 88 minute.

They certaintly aren't going to win the world cup, that's for sure.

Did someone say political discussion??? :)

Talk about superiority complex. You doubt that he knows much about the rest of the world? Talk about a crock of poo. BTTM, tell him your history and your past experiences. Man, wow, if you think we Americans have superiority complexes, what do you call that?

If you want to say that the US isn't the best country, then back it up. What is? Who's better and why? I'm sure there are yanks here who'd be happy to discuss the merits of any argument you bring up. Who's better, all around and why? What is your argument? Give me, and the others here, some clue as to what you're arguing. It sounds to me like you're just saying the US isn't that good, others are better, without saying who's better, and how. Flesh out your argument. Back it up.

WTF is up with that? Our government is not an imperialistic dictatorship that is out to conquer land. We are not commiting gennocide. If people have a problem with this country, that is there problem in my opinion. I cannot make anyone change their minds about the lies that their media chooses to spread about the US. I have to live my life. If a terrorist shows up on a plane that I am on, he have better had packed his lunch, cuz he is going to have his hands full. If he shows up in my neighborhood, he is going to get his A$$ shot. Hey, all you terror freaks. Come here, and line up. Us southern boys can handle it for you. we will be more than happy to explain things to you.

Sorry for the rant, but statements like that one just piss me off bad.

Reeeaaaallly?? So, why then was most of Europe resisting the idea of reunifying east and west germany? If we American's don't know you so well, why would your neighbors who should know you better so upset by the idea?

Like I said before, no one does the 3am wake up call better the the US military.

Oh, before you start on about the SAS or one of your other little groups, let me introduce you to the USS Enterprise and her sister ships.

I don't feel like getting into a political discussion, I already told you. And I don't think that you could tell me a lot of new stuff about "how the world works", I guess I am pretty well informed myself. So forget about the padawan thing! ;)

I was in the US before and I don't feel at all to live there, but that is another subject that I also don't want to get into too deep. And I know also a lot of other people who wouldn't like to. That's maybe hard on you, but it is fact. And actually in Europe it is not that seldom to move to other countries. Some friends of mine live in the Netherlands, France, Spain and the UK. None in the US. On the other hand I know quite a few Americans (and lots of other nationalities) that live here in Europe and they don't want to go back to the US or to their hoem countries.

Your point of view is pretty biased and hearing you talking like that makes me doubt that you have been outside a lot of the US in your life, otherwise you wouldn't talk like that.

Oh, and to be true... I know two IT-Specialists that lived in the US for a few years. They went for the money, but they came back and live here again. They had enough of it.

So what's teh conclusion? There is none! There are people that prefer to live in the US, others in Germany, others in Canada, others in France...

So what's the point?

That just underlines that you (I mean not Americans in general, just you in person) don't know a lot about Europe, otherwise you wouldn't have asked that question.

So please guys, I told you I don't feel like discussing that. Why do you go on now anyway, trying to convince me that the US are most superior country in the world. Is it that hard on you that someone thinks different?
