Hey guys,
I downloaded a movie from the internet and it is in 4 parts. the 1st part works fine w/t VLC player but the other 3 parts don't. It does not recognise the 'File Type'.
Even I dont know what type of media file it is. When you right click and try Get Info it doesn't tell you even then.
I was wondering if there is a free Mac Software that can determine what type of file it is. and then I can then download the appropritate software for the file. It could be a compressed file.
Any help will be appreciated.
Cheers

It sounds like your video is a segmented archive that you neglected to rejoin. Absent any information about the file extensions or of any other information by which the file type can be identified, that is my best guess.

Try extracting it first with Stuffit or UnRarX or The Unarchiver.
You don't have a video file, you have an archive file, which contains the video
What is the extension?

When I use The Unarchiver it says - The contents of the file cannot be extracted by this program.
This is the name of the file:
Rock.On.Pre-Dvd.Rip.Xvid-By.Subhash.avi.002
It says AVI but does not open with VLC. I was only able to open one part that too it came up with an error see attachment. I just click on NO & able to watch the video.

go to the directory with the file using terminal, then use cat
cat file.avi.001 file.avi.002 file.avi.002 file.avi.004 > file.avi
usually simple is the file names are relatively easy to type or simply cut and paste the same file name and use backspace to change the last digit and remove the numbers for the output file.
Edit: if you have ever used text edit to check to see what the file type of an unknown video is, you'll see it only only at the beginning of the file -- since the other parts are technically NOT the file beginning, they are unknown until you rejoin them back into a single file.

Hi sorry to be a pain. I'm new to Mac, but I know what terminal is.
Is it possible for you to give me a step by step instruction, if its not too long a process. That'll be much appreciated.

Try using UnRarX (http://www.unrarx.com/).

1. Learn how to use terminal.app, navigate through the drive with a command line prompt, and use cat ...
2. Or use the GUI
If you want to do (2) the go to www.versiontracker.com and type join.
Download an app, and learn how to use it.

...It is clear that you have a segmented archive. The key file in a segmented archive is the first file. You should ensure that all segments are stored in a single folder. However, you join these files by working with the first file. In your case, this is Rock.On.Pre-Dvd.Rip.Xvid-By.Subhash.avi.001.
Download and install Stuffit Expander (http://my.smithmicro.com/mac/stuffit/index.html). Drag and drop the first file's icon onto the Stuffit Expander icon.

It is clear that you have a segmented archive.
Segmented file, not archive, since the first file segment is already running under the video player.
