i am a pc tech in one of my jobs i have...i own my own pc repair business...i used to do computers as a hobby, but that is not so healthy given my current occupation...variety is the spice of life
my main hobby is boating and model boating...i have a 12 foot fishing skiff and i also build 1-2 foot balsa wood models of fishing vessels
i used to play music a lot (25 years) and now i just have one electric guitar (esp/ltd viper 301) and no amp
wine and beer tasting are definitely a hobby and i like light beers these days and i like cabernet sauvignon/bordeaux...burgundy and pinot noir are also fine wines
on the weekends, i like to visit the farm animals...a donkey, four goats, a pot bellied big, an 18 lb wild turkey, a tame banny chicken, and a growing emu chick
and to top it all off, i go to mall bookstores while my wife (also a techie) shops for clothes...and more clothes

Macs (obviously :p)
I really enjoy reading. Right now i'm reading Harry Potter - Und Die Kammer Des Schreckens (sorry, i can't remember the exact name in english), and Valhalla Rising, by Clive Cussler.
I also like to try and keep fit. For the past few weeks i've been going for a bike ride every day, and then working out in the evening. I'm going to *try* to keep it up. I certaintly feel much better than i did before is started doing this.
A more long-term hobby is travelling. I absolutely love going to a new country, where i've never been before, and seeing how different things are to other places.

driving around the city checking out the architecture
red wines (yes, it's something I enjoy, thus a hobby)
ethnic foods (I love trying new stuff)
Garbage Pail Kids (I revived my childhood memories last year)
I recently became involved with a new art gallery as well, so now I have that on my plate...
plus I'm working on finishing up my college education...not really a hobby, but something I'm dedicated to...

My interests when I'm not working......???? that's a toughie as design is my life even when I'm not doing it I wish I was......
Well apart from designing I like mountain biking..... although at the moment I don't have a mountain bike.... but hey that's only a minor problem.... I love driving as well..... although I don't own a car either so that too, does somewhat spoil the enjoyment........ if I get the chance I like to do abit of strumming on the old guitar...... but I don't own a guitar either at the moment as I sold my Rickenbacker... a move that I now greatly regret......
I love Strongbow..... the nicest alcoholic beverage in the entire world....... I love going out with my friends...... particularly to the oxo tower in London...... totally cool... although very expensive.... I like going to the Tate Modern every few months to see the latest exhibition........ I love architecture........ and I absolutely love white knuckle rides........ I love lot's of stuff basically......
Oh I also like designing..........:)

If you list drinking as one of your hobbies, you need some help. I don't drink enough to talk about (I MIGHT go through a 4 or 6 pack (Irish stuff) in a month). Wine TASTING is different, but just drinking is not good (sign of alcoholism).

Post 1: I have lots of hobbies.
Post 2: My minor hobbies include astronomy, Macs, listening to hard music, making up lyrics for songs, and billiards.
Post 3: Astronomy is probably my favorite topic to discuss.
Post 4: There is a small billiard table in our house, but in a small room.
Post 5: My major collecting hobby is coin collecting. I must have about $4000 worth of coins (for once bullion gold is worth while :D), ranging from the one $20 1800s liberty my grandfather gave me, to the newest statehood quarters.
Post 6: But it doesn't mean I need to post this information in separate posts when I can simply edit my first post and add what I need to!

Nice guitar. I wish I had a proper before shot so you could see that bass before I got the refinish.... it was SO beat up. Kinda can see it in this pic but still...it had this crappy stain on it, and it was worn in spots and the wood started to discolor. Was horrid.
BUt she's all better now. :) and worth a penny I hear. :)

Hey! Not just newbies!
What does that fool ride then?? It's not worth my time to bash him... :D Harley is what every other cruiser company wants to be, why else do they try to copy them so much??? I am on my way to fully customizing my Harley. I am doing this out of choice, NOT becuase of a need (other then my own addiction). Harley is the ONLY motorcycle that you DON'T loose money on as soon as you leave the dealership. As soon as I picked up my Harley, I could have sold it and MADE a few grand profit. Tell him to shove that up his pipe and choke on it... :p  :D

as a former collector, i say don't refinish anything before 1970 that is american or a good ibanez or yamaha
as a player, i know its nice to have gear in good, working condition and look nice, too
sometimes a refret is necessary to make an instrument play well, too
now if you had a fender jazz bass from 1964 or before, i would not touch a single thing since they are worth big bucks in original condition...even if they don't work
an early 60s jazz bass belongs in a vault...unfortunately

Here's a couple of comments. I refinished the bass simply because it looked like crap. I am not planning on selling it, I'm not planning on auctioning it off on ebay, and I surely don't care if there is a collector who wants to drool (and otherwise) on my bass and offer me piles of cash. As a matter of fact, I promised the guy who did the refinish (a man who worked for Fender and then Ernie Ball) that I wouldn't sell it.
I don't believe in hanging guitars on walls or locking them away in vaults. They're there for a purpose. They're there to be played. To create. And if anyone wants to whine "well, we have to preserve the heritage" I say two things:
1. Record some good music with the instrument. That's the real way of preserving it. Make sure the SOUNDS are documented, and they will live on well after the instrument has passed.
2. Push the companies to perform guitarmaking to the standards of vintage guitars. Look at the craftsmanship on a 1962 jazz bass and look at a 2002 jazz. The new jazz basses, from the mexican squiers to the american customs are horrid. If they took the same pride of design and craftsmanship that they took "back in the day" we wouldn't NEED to lock away 1962 jazz basses simply because in 2042 years, we'd have 2002 jazz basses.
As such, I'll take my '69 out to gigs. I'll keep a watchful eye on her. I'll play the guitar, because in reality, a guitar only sounds better when played. I'll let it absorb the smoke of the bars, the oils from the hands, the sweat from the glands and over the years she'll sound better and better. The wood will age and mellow, the sound will only strengthen. And when its time for a refinish, i'll do it alll again. :)

Well my grandfather had them, then he passed them onto me. I had to have them fixed up, but they all run just as they did when he got them. The great thing is that he protected them really well so they are in really good condition with all the original boxes(BIG plus)
It is very expensive;) Considering one engine cost me $320 and they station cost $150.(But it talks, it has a little LP in it that makes train sounds really cool)
I gonna have a busy summer working on it:)

With HO railroads I strongly recomend using newer stuff. Older HO is not as good and few pieces were made long ago. The only old HO I can think of is when American Flyer did HO for a few years in the 60's. Stick with the newer stuff it is built very well:)
I used to do HO, but I liked the larger trains so I am S scale now(American Flyer)
Great to see others involved in this hobby, most people I know have Lionel and O gague.

it is the famous collector and stock instrument in original condition vs the "let's use it for what it was intended for" argument
i see both sides
your jazz bass in its original but crappy condition was worth twice or three times what it is worth now as a refinished instrument...even if leo fender was still alive and he refinished the instrument himself and signed the inside cavity of the jazz bass
but at the same time, you want this beautifully designed bass to look and play its best
if you truly do not plan on reselling the bass, then refinishing, refretting, and changing out electronics (when they die or when you want a different sound) is ok
i bought a refinished '65 telecaster in 1984 and it was worth five hundred dollars because it was refinished...the frets were totally worn down and it did not play
i had a luthier refret it and it played beautifully and i had it refinished again since the original refinish was horrid
in the end, i had a true twangy sounding telecaster that both looked good and played well...by the time i got it to a giggable point, it was probably only worth three hundred dollars since the body was modified with new paint and the neck was modified with new frets
if you can somehow keep your jazz bass with its original frets and tuners, then at least you will have an all original neck and that alone is worth 80% of what your entire bass is worth...just in case you have to resell
an all original 69 jazz bass is worth about $1500 dollars and a refin jazz bass is worth maybe 900...but if you refret it, then it won't be able to take in more than 600 or so
but in the end, if you don't resell it, it won't matter if you used an all original '69, a refinished '69, or a refretted and refinished '69 with emg's in them
the main thing is, do you like it and does it give you enjoyment
...right now, i am considering taking out my emg-hz's from my electric guitar (esp-ltd viper 301) ...pix below link from internet
www.espguitars.com/html/viper301.html
...and swapping them with lower output seymour duncan '59's to get a more suitable tone for jazz and classic rock (with little or no distortion)...the emg-hz's have too much of that heavy metal gain reminiscent of metallica

i love the ibanez rg series
dexter holland from the offspring has one just like your blue one...noodles uses the ibanez talmans
i used to have an '81 ibanez blazer 550 which became the roadstar which became the rg series
my favorite ibanez is the joe satriani series signature model which is kind of a cross between the rg and a traditional fender stratocaster...but i can't see parting with 1500 bucks...in that case, i would rather get the 700 mhz ibook (even though the ibook will give me three years of useful life vs. the thirty i can get from the guitar)

I've been down the road of that argument hundreds of times. and yes, that Jazz Bass is gorgeous, and I would NEVER part with it. the sound is purely amazing. Recorded or Live, it's unreal how good it sounds. all electronics are original in it, as well as frets. As an aside, the neck is perfect straight and hasn't been futzed with much. Thing is gonna last and I plan on having it for awhile.
That said, I also have a 66 p-bass that looks like complete ****e. And i won't spend to get it refinished. I hate the way p-basses play in general (love the sounds though). I could probably sell it for more than the jazz, to a collector. But at the same token, that Jazz is worth so much more to me than just about anything i own on a purely spiritual level. It's Darn organic sounding and i love it. :)

But yea, I am thinking: Sell the bass, the 667 ti, the dual 450, get a new 800, a cinema display, the motu 1196. Start recording. ;)

even the oldest machine listed, the dual 450, can be a great recording machine
i used to be an analog person and i hated all technology beyond hard wired consoles and tube amps...but now that i am a techie, i have to tip my hat to the world of silicon
computers, musicianship, and some basic techie skills can make a great sounding album
can you post a pix of your 66 p-bass? i am a guitarist but i still love bass guitars...i had an esp parts p-bass with fender parts once

Yea. I'll post some pics. I have it in my storage area with some other interesting guitars-- a 62 silvertone (horrid shape, nice pickups though) a late 70's ric and a D'Armond (fender/guild) blue sparkley guitar
.
The ric is the best one of the bunch, guitar wise

you have some nice guitars, too
i don't collect much since i got into...gasp...computers and my music friends think i dove off into some sort of geekhood...and i gained 35 lbs and now i can actually understand geek jargon...but i have to catch up on later generation star trek episodes to really be a true geek...i heard scott bakula is very good as a starship captain
as for guitars, i have only one, but i did have 55 or 56 which are all sold or given away...he he...and to make room for computers, of course
maybe i will list my guitars one day...i still remember them all...or almost...mostly cheap instruments i bought on a whim
but computers, especially macs, are a more expensive hobby for sure
there are kids out there who play games, surf chat rooms, and write three page essays and they have tibook 800s...talk about doing it in style...he he

I hear ya. Speaking of style, I really wanna get two dual gig xserves, an new iMac, rack the xserves with a motu 1196 (firewire recording) a nice noise gate, eq, etc etc and hook up the imac, fire up cubase SX (if it ever gets out! :) :) ) get nuedo working, reason, plug in the guitars, grab out the neumann and shure mics and record me an album. :)
And if i wanna record ina church, or in a field, or live, or wherever, just grab the rack, the imac, the guitars and roll. :)
