Excuse my ignorance, but how can I tell what verion of CarbonLib I have installed on my computer?

Apple has just recently released a stand alone version of it's CarbonLib 1.6

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120047

Apparently it was available through Sofware Update too. I've updated regularly, and don't recall having downloaded CarbonLib 1.6 from the Software Update. Nor does it appear in my Software Update Log...

So, how do I tell what version I've got installed, and do I need to install it if I've got an older version?

In updating, what risks do I run, and what backups should I make, if any?

Thanks.

Look at:

System Folder/Extensions/CarbonLib

The file should have a created/modified date around 6/17/2002 or show version 1.6 when you do a Get Info - Command-i

Thanks Sun Baked,

I just checked and found that it is version 1.4 from July 2001.

I'm pretty sure that is what it came preinstalled with. It's a Quicksilver DP 800.

So, should I update it? Is it a big deal that I would need to backup anything first?

Do I have to update to 1.5 first, and then go to 1.6?

Thanks again.

Have you tried using the software update control panel? It might do everything for you there.

The CarbonLib Updater should just update the one file, though I haven't looked inside the stand alone updater - just guessing.

And you should always have backups of any files you can't risk losing...

it also shows it in the apple system profiler

make sure to keep a copy of your old one though (although you can usually grab them off the net at versiontracker)

some apps don't play nice with new carbonLibs....
