Any old CD-RW drive will do. I suggest using Toast Titanium and iMovie, just have iMovie export to toast Video CD. FCP should be able to save to a format toast can burn as VCD too.

You need a DVD disc to play movies in non-computers.

Not true. You can play a VCD in a VCD compatible DVD player (or a VCD player if you can find one outside of Hong Kong).

Make sure you export it in MPEG format...that's the only format that VCDs use...otherwise you have to wait a long time (it's annoying) to convert the files to MPEGs...however, if you do need to do that, I believe that Toast Titanium can convert most files to MPEG format when you drag them in to burn a VCD. Anyway, good luck!

Also, you shouldn't be having any problems with burning a VCD on your superdrive...I've burned many a VCD on mine...
