Panther install wont get past startup screen and spinning circle

Hi.My machine is a B&W G3 (upgraded to G4 500) and i'm trying to install Panther on it.However when i boot from the CD and get to the startup screen and spinning circle it just stays there with the circle spinning.Left it there for nearly an hour and still nothing.Anyone know what the problem is?Thanks.

How much RAM do you have?

640 Megs 256 in slot 1 256 in slot 2 and 128 in slot 3

Was the CD-ROM Drive.I had the default Apple 32X in there and installation would not start fom it (would not get past the grey screen)...then i switched it with a Lite-on 52X burner, booted from the CD and wa-lah!Panther rules!
