View Full Version : How much music do you have?

Is it just me, or is it impossible to fill up a 10gig iPod with music? I've never had more than 2 gigs of mp3s. How much do you have on your computer / iPod?

Hee Hee. I am a SICK music fan. And yes, I can fill up a 5gb iPod and am now going to be switching to a 10gb (giving a close friend my 5gb). I have currently on the ipod 782 songs and about a gig of free space (for files).
Right now, I have half of my mp3 collection in iTunes... and about 200 mb a day coming from emusic (if only TafAkr could get the tagging issue squared away!)
The attached is my current iTunes library. Physcially, I have 2500 cds, about 350 casettes (which I wanna get around to digitizing) and about 500 records.
:) I said I was sick. I spend most of my money on music. heehee

mike, that's hardcore!
I only have 0.8GB of mp3s or so, composed of about 150 songs or so. The folder lists 180 +/-, but mostly because I have created different versions of songs, either censored or edited in some way or another.
On my iPod I have a solid 100 songs. I have the albums Hybrid Theory, Come Clean, (some others), 18, and Staellite. I also have a few comedy clips on there (about 2 minutes each) from Whose Line (both CA and DC versions).
I also have a few Disturbed, NIN, Trust Company, Korn, Orgy, SOAD, and several others. Nothing as "big time" as mike.

I have the opposite problem... I can't reduce my music to fit on my iPod... :(
Everytime I buy new CD's, and I rip some songs, I have to get some out of my iPod list if I want to put the new songs on... :(

moxie...I think it's time u sought some help... ;)
No..but seriously...I'm a big music fan myself. While I have probably about 400 or so CD's...I have about 1300 mp3's on my TiBook. Hardly touches a candle to u moxie, but I'm pretty happy. :D
I don't burn every song on every CD, as I'm sure many of u guys don't either. But I do have a extensive listing of Depeche Mode, Better Than Ezra, Madonna, Paul Oakenfold & BT mp3's in my library... ;)

Actually, I have like 6 or 7 CDs and all of the songs from them are on the iPod!
And I think that people who actually have more than, say, 500 mp3s, don't listen to even half of them that much often anymore. It's like storing them away everywhere. And if you have 2000 or so mp3s, I don't think help will do the trick. I think maybe clearing out the songs from the least listened CD would help, since you still should have the CD.
And if you have 5000 or more, then you might be in trouble. Especially if you still listen to that many.

See, I am a big fan of having everything a certain artist produces.... it's odd. Have every Cure album, every Elvis Costello, every Smiths/Morrissey, all the DM stuff. All the Thievery Corporation stuff, all the Portishead, et. al.
Yea. I am sick. and yes, I have listened to every song at least twice (which doesn't mean I remember them. :) )

Well I don't have an iPod just yet. However, as for my 1300 mp3's, I listen to all of them for the most part. I usually just leave iTunes on the library and let it go random play. It gives a nice variety...he he he ;)
Have any of u guys noticed that iTunes has a cycle in which it plays? I've noticed that it'll play the same songs often, and in some cases I can tell it's going through the same play order of other songs...weird...

This I have noticed.... my version seems to REALLY like Morrissey and the Smiths. Now if only it were a cute girl..... hmmmm. ;)
Seriously, it is an odd little happening. Like, I can get the same "random playlist" two or three days in a row sometimes.
Then get something completely off base, iPod is the same

I usually have the same song repeat itself while I am typing or as bored as the living blue h!!! while on my computer. I kind of get bored with variety and old songs, since the newer songs I am interested in are a much different taste and, well, more extreme.
Example: A few days ago I was listening to By Myself by Linkin Park and now I am trying out Push It by Static-X, which goes up another level.
I haven't noticed the problem as you guys brought up about iTunes, and I better not get it.

A good friend of mine has in the realm of 50GB of MP3's. He does Mac IT work as a free agent and just asks if he can borrow a few CD's from clients from time to time. Add to that some limewire stuff you can't find on CD (live bootlegs of Jimi Hendrix for example).
I only keep about 240 Hours of music at any given time. I try not to rip whole albums if they're mostly crap.:D

Thievery Corporation
American Analog Set
Miles Davis
Chet Baker
Charles Minugs

Jimi Hendrix
Bob Dylan
The Doors
Radiohead
Nin Inch Nails
The Jesus and Mary Chain
Mudhoney
Nirvana
Smashing Pumpkins
Soundgarden
Sound Tribe Sector Nine
Jamiroquai
The Cardigans
That's not all, I'm sure, but a pretty good cross section. In addition to the aforementioned stuff, I have a bunch of Sup Pop crap, and Classical.
As of late, I've been increasingly getting into Miles Davis, Afro Cuban, Drum and Bass, etc...
I'm waiting for QT6, Jaguar, and an update to iTunes bfore I burn them all to my computer.
So who plays instruments out there?
I played the violin for 8 years, the piano for 3, and I've dabbled off and on with the guitar for years now.

I have mostly techno/trance, some punk and alternative, lots of classical and marches, some jazz, and some parody songs. I mostly like techno/trance, and classical. The Beatles are cool, though. Since I don't have the money to build up an extensive CD collection (I prefer to get rips from CD's, because I usually get better quality), I just fire up the radio tuner in iTunes, and turn it to 'DI Hard Trance' or something. With most modern music, I don't really like a certain group. I might like one or two different songs from certain artists, but I'm not a die-hard fan of just one group.
Another type of music that I like, is drum and bugle corps music. I've been looking for some mp3's with different corps, but I haven't found anything all that great. The thing about this type of music, is that you have to have loud speakers to appreciate the true affect of actually being in front of one of these groups... It's the coolest feeling, to be in a stadium with over 100 brass instruments playing as loud as possible...

OK! This may sound ridiculous but I currently have ~75G of MP3's (~15000 songs). Everything from ABBA to ZZTop! And I even have some good stuff! This pales in comparison to a hard-core user I know, who is the biggest user of iSwipe ever (trust me on this one) the most powerful music grabber ever. He has in excess of 150G of MP3s (27000 songs).
Of course both of us only listen to a fraction of the music we have. But it is fun when we have parties. You can almost always bet we will have something that will apppeal to all listeners!

to someone just learning guitar, i may sound ok, but i am no studio musician...he he
i have tried to learn how to read music, but like losing weight, i never stuck to it so i just play by ear but doing that will severely limit anyone
if you are curious what i sound like as a singer, you can go to www.turnrock.com and i am the higher pitched vocalist of the two
or go to mp3 and look up turn, from pacific grove, ca
the guitarist of turn put my worst takes on those websites and i can't even bear to listen to them:p

Yeah, they ended up killing any file share on my School network (were talking many T1s here) because it killed our bandwidth. This was two years ago though, at the hieght of Napster. Shawn Fanning came and talked about it one day.
I have a little over 1100 tracks in iTunes (Xplay and a bunch od friends with iPods get the selection up fast:D ), but I also have about four hundred CDs I've never ripped and most of them never will be. hell, a hundred or so are in storage in the basement, I haven't wanted tohear them for so long.

If your a big Cocteau Twins fan, try Dead Can Dance...same type of stuff but a bit more Celtic...
Also, I recently bought an I-Sub for use on my new I-mac and it is doing the unthinkable....It has crashed OS X, completely, at least ten times. I normally happens when I use I-Tunes and Limewire a the same time. All of a sudden all of the speakers go out except one of the little ones, and the entire computer is locked to the point of requiring a powered reboot!
Anyone else ever heard of this happening?

I have a question...
Is it unlawful to set up a mp3 stream with music on your computer, and let other people listen to it? Not that I would ever do that type of thing...

Here's a better question... Is it possible to make some people happy without pissing other people off? No. I'm sure you could do it if you wanted to, and you wouldn't have charges brought against you, but I'm guessing with all the new laws about file-sharing, it would be concidered illegal. I mean, if it's illegal to have your mp3s in the first place, unless you own the cd.. yatta yatta yatta.
Bunch of crap if you ask me -
Napster ... Good
Napster ... Dead :(

U know that's something I didn't really think about.
I'm currently working on a server I am going to create an internet radio station with...now I'm wondering...
unless it's a private station that only select people know of maybe?
