You've got to be kidding me? Right? (I hope..)

Has something happened to it, that lead for your IMEI to get blocked

The phone was lost, reported to O2 and found again after the replacment was sent out. O2 blocked the IMEI. I was given the phone by a close friend but my SIM will not work. I just wondered whether it was possible to get it working again. If not I can still use it as an iPod.

There's your answer.. O2, contact them and see what they could do about it.

Though I don't get it and out of curiousity, if your friend found it, gave it to you with the phone's IMEI blocked, why would he do that?

Because O2 sent her a new iPhone as it was insured. O2 blocked the old phone so it couldn't be used if it was found by someone.

Surely if I call O2 they will just ask me to return the phone.

Yes as anything else is insurance fraud. In fact I'm pretty sure your friend has already committed fraud by failing to inform O2 that he found the old phone. This is a criminal act with serious consequences. It's things like this that push up the cost of insurance for all of us. Stop being a criminal and return the phone to it's rightful owners: O2.

It is claims like this that push up costs. You can justify it any way you like but you are a common criminal. I have reported this fraud to The Insurance Fraud Bureau (https://www.insurancefraudbureau.org/). I hope they will be in contact soon.

Whilst I too hold out little hope that the criminal in this will be brought to justice I have done all I can. I hope the OP gets what he deserves in the end.

I know you did all you could and I hold it in high regard, but I'm sure he won't get what he deserves.

I assume the OP is referring to this (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=696653) 'phone that fell off the back of a lorry - i.e. stolen? :(
