Even though I use an iPhone, no, that does not mean anything, it just means the iPhone is more popular

Is this for the original iPhone or the 3g ?

compare pictures of original iPhone to Pre launch
compare pictures of 3g to Pre (I assume this is what you did)
what about the new iPhone launch

This looks a lot like using stats, pick the ones you want to prove a point and ignore everything else

Just to play Devil's Advocate, you see Britney Spears shows sell out thousands of seats too, but I'd much rather catch Deerhoof in a small venue. :)

This is meaningless.

If you were expecting lines similar to those of Apple Stores on launch date of iPhone you need to re-think the Pre/iPhone/SmartPhone matrix. Furthermore, Pre marketing has intentionally been minimal because of low supply.

No company, whether it be Palm, RIM, Nokia, etc. can garner the attention Apple receives.

And a million flies can't be wrong, eat... ;)

ryant601

albeit popularity doesnt mean a phone is better or worse, generally, if people are willing to buy something...in very large quantities (iphone), a company would be more willing to invest more into the product. Hence apples 3 versions of their phone, on the brink of their fourth. and other companies dont offer the massive firmware updates we as apple users get.

popoularity can ultimately determine whether a phone is better.

whoever gave the analogy of music, that's completely unrelated.

Jun 6, 2009, 09:42 AM
HAHA! Don't try and pull that "Oh, the iPhone is popular", today is Palm Pre's Day, they had to same opportunity to get HUGE crowds like the iPhone, and they didn't. Simple as that.

iWork
Jun 6, 2009, 09:43 AM
Popularity and sales is indeed important.

However, if we rely solely on sales as a measurement of what is "better", then Windows would triumph Mac.

While one can easily list areas where the iPhone upstages Pre, the pictures in this thread aren't good metrics.

Of course it is iPhone fandom. This is a Mac forum, and more specifically an iPhone forum. We all love our phones, I would say hardly any of us come on here to complain about our iPhones.

Thats why we post things like this, because we get to have a good laugh and smile about the phones in our pockets.

I hardly think the OP was trying to say that it means something, I think it was more an attempt at humor while we are all waiting for Monday morning.

My experience with AT&T / iPhone 3G Launch.

-Get in line, wait in the hot sun outside
-A few hours later, the doors open and a few people go in. Nobody has any idea what is going on because no AT&T reps will talk to us
-Waiting still. Taking long apparently because Apple got stupid and released 2.0 and MobileMe the same day.
-Still waiting! It's hot outside! Nobody has talked to us yet. At least the people around in line are nice.
-Finally a few more people go into the store!
-Waiting still, should it take this long to sell phones?
-A few more people go in!
-After about two more hours of waiting, we hear from an AT&T employee for the first time! Yay! Oh, wait, they're sold out?!?

Summary: Rude AT&T reps, never had any idea what was going on. AT&T didn't count inventory and compare that to people waiting in line, they just let us wait outside for no reason.

Here's my experience getting the Pre this morning:

-Roll up 30 minutes before opening, I'm about #20 in line. I'm scared because the memories of AT&T's days are well in my head.
-In about 10 minutes the Sprint store manager comes out. She brings us bottled water and breakfast snacks. She also brings out chairs for a few customers.
-20 minutes later, right before opening, manager comes back out. She's super polite and not bad on the eyes either. She hands out tickets, if you get a ticket you get a Pre. Takes trash and lets half the line in.
-Wait in the store for the sales reps to ring up the first batch. Inside there are donuts, more refreshments, and another manager is demoing the phone/accessories to people waiting in line.
-I buy the phone.

FU AT&T. I really liked my iPhone, I think it's a fantastic device and I know it has some advantages to my Pre. Also after playing with the Pre for 20 minutes I think it will have some advantages over the iPhone. Either way, AT&T will never see another dime of my money.

Of course in general popularity doesn't always mean quality.

Although I dare anyone here to claim the iPhone isn't a very good quality product.

The fact that only 11 or so people were willing to line up for the Pre says a lot about consumer confidence in that product so far. Especially coming from an established and at least one time respected company.

I also guess just because you're selling Apple-lite doesn't guarantee many people will bite.

Very good product as a whole but as a phone it's dire.

- Constant dropped calls.
- Bad signal.
- Terrible speakers so you cannot hear the phone ring with background noise or if it's in another room, etc.
- Cannot speak on the phone with background noise because ear speaker is also terrible.
- No SMS forwarding yet.
- No draft support.
- No character counter so you can see how many SMS units you will use per message.
- Cannot delete individual messages/call logs.
- No MMS support.
- No video calling.

I bought my iPhone at an AT&T Store (I know, the shame...) and the lines at that little store tucked INSIDE a crappy grocery store (in Jacksonville, Florida) was longer than the line shown in Manhattan. Everything is relative.

I know SMS forwarding, deleting individual texts, and MMS support is coming in the next firmware update. I wouldn't call that "most of" those gripes. In fact, the speaker issue cannot be resolved without a hardware update.

Does it really take 2 years to implement something as simple as forwarding a text message?

I am saying it's not a good PHONE. It's an amazing multimedia/internet device, but the phone is not that good.

I had a 1st gen iPhone for over a year and trying to talk on it was a nightmare. I would also sometimes not receive my text messages until like an hour after they were sent.

I was using my unlocked iPhone on O2 PAYG. I'm using my new 5800xm on the same network but don't have any of the problems I did on my old phone.

Maybe I was just unlucky enough to get a faulty device (although I have seen a LOT of reports about dropped calls), but I would sometimes have to call someone back up to 5 times just to finish a conversation because the phone kept dropping calls.

I'm sorry but it took Motorola 20 years to work that out :)

When I had an iPhone I used to use marimba. I had it at full volume and I could not even hear it on the train or if there was traffic. I did try other ringtones including UK hardcore music (which includes bassdrums) so it was definitely not just the ringtone.

I agree the speaker blows, but a solution could be to make a custom ringtone and jack the volume level of the actual audio file up to account for the iPhone's lack.

I played with a 3G in my O2 store and my mum's friend also has one. Although much much better than the 1st gen iPhone, the 3g's speaker is still not up to par. Go and listen to almost any other phone - the speakers are very loud.

I put it down to apple being new in the smartphone market and remembering what's really important. Maybe in a couple of revisions time the iPhone will actually be the best phone in the world.

Your first mistake was going to an ATT store. My experience on the original iPhone release day:
1. Called my local Apple Store around 11:30 PM to see if they had any 8GBs in stock. Friendly sales person said "we have plenty, we are open until midnight and there is no line anymore".
2. Got in my car, drove to the Apple Store, walked in and purchased an 8GBer.
3. Drove home, plugged it into iTunes for the registration process, was up and running with my new phone in 10 minutes.

It's easier to provide service like that when you have 30 people in line or so, and not hundreds like Apple and AT&T experience for an iPhone launch. I waiting in line for an iPhone in 07 too, and by the time 6 pm rolled around, we had 200 or more people in line. You can't expect them to provide food and water for all 200 of us. I'm also pretty sure Apple sent a policy down saying they didn't want tickets to be handed out.

That's true. They did. Back then. But now they wouldn't. Now people expect a phone in this class to have a thriving App store experience. With an active developer community.

I love that the pre image actually has one man and his dog! :p

Still not exactly a way to compare the two handsets
