Sorry, it has to stop. Every minute there is new thread on, can I swap sims with an elgible line? What happens if I upgrade an elgible line and switch the phone over. I wish they would sticky this, it's clogging up the boards.
I know, I'm just adding one more. However, hopefully this slows/stops it.
So people don't have to even search, here is all of the (pretty much) exact same threads I found from now until yesterday at 3PM:

Outrageous? Yes, I know.
The answer is YES, you can use any eligible line to upgrade to the 3G S and switch to your line. That line will just be locked in to a two year contract.
Thanks and have a good day. Yes, its a slow day at work.

Instead of listing all those threads you could have reported all those threads.

I knew this since the iPhone 3gs was announced.

If you're going to post a comprehensive thread it should have all the answers
ie: Will a 3G SIM work in a 3GS phone and vice versa?
Should I upgrade a 3G to 3.0 if I am swapping them?
If a 3G SIM doesn't work in a 3GS, how can I transfer a number?

Most people know you can do this, what a lot of people are unclear about, me included, is how. Do we activate it with the line eligible person THEN swap the SIM? Can we put our SIM in it and have ATT OLAM auto-update the IMEI or do we have to call? What happens with the other person's plan if they're going to get the iPhone the person who is upgrading to the 3GS had?
Any definitive answers to this?

hmmm, on a family plan if one person is eligible for the upgrade and is willing to give you the 3gs, all you have to do is swap the sim card call AT&T and there you go. ;). Oh yea you'll be saved from an extra 2yrs.

But won't it pose a problem having to activate it on the other line and have all those settings transfer over? I forget about that process, is there just a way to set it up as a new iPhone, activate it, switch SIM's, plug into MY computer and then put all my stuff on it?
Actually, I could just activate it on my computer with the other person's line and then just switch SIM's. I'll have all my data on there right? That shouldn't change with what SIM I'm using...
(confused)

It won't interfear with anytimg. All you have to do is make sure that your in a family plan, upgrade whoevers line is eligible for the 3gs. Either pre-order it or purchase it on apple.com then switch the sim cards and call AT&T and tell them that you want your number on the 3gs and to keep the orginal number on what ever phone the person upgrade from onto it.
P.s it will be helpful if u had the current 3g (which I hope you do, if so u already have the 30 data plan) now let's say this will be your first iPhone, and the person that did the upgrade for you has an iPhone an extra 30 data fee will be applyed to your account.
