As far as I know nobody phone company in the world that carries the iPhone is lowering the price for existing customers. So its not going to happen. AT&T shouldn't renew your contract every year when the iphone comes out. So this year you would have a 3 year contract, next year a 4 year contract, then a 5 year contract, etc.. Then people will complain about the contracts, the ETF is only $175 so if you have a 5 year contract and pay 175 to get out of it, who is taking the loss? the phone company.
If you want the new iphone so bad, then pay full price for it, or do what I did and a family member to your account and get the iphone at the subsidized price. I even gave her my iphone 3g so she is getting a free iphone.
But everybody complaining about the price needs to chill out. You know there will be a new phone next summer anyway and the people get the phones this summer will be s.o.l. because they can't get next year's phone at the subsidized price.

I am confused. I am new here so maybe I am missing something... but...
Why should AT&T lower their upgrade price? Didn't they subsidize their customer's current iphones? Because if they did, they need to recover their investment into the customer in the form of a 2 year contract, otherwise they would be losing money. Again, maybe I am missing something here that would justify lowering the price.

I bet you could get a lot of people to sign a petition asking AT&T to make the iPhone completely free. That doesn't mean it's going to happen.

This really is pathetic. You knew full well that Apple would come out with an upgraded version of the Iphone before you 2 year commitment was up, but didn't mind taking the upgrade price then. Now since something newer and better comes along and you all feel entitled to get the same price as those who have waiting their time and new customers? Seriously some people make me sick. If you want the newest technology then go sell your old 3g and use that to cover the difference in price and quit bitching on Macrumors about it. AT&T & Apple don't owe you anything since they already covered the cost of your phone and you SIGNED THE CONTRACT!

AT&T actually did allow the 1st genernation iPhone users upgrade their phone to 3G for $199. That is the main reason why people are talking about.

All this hype just proves to AT&T that people love the iPhone and will never go to another carrier as long as it is exclusive to AT&T, no matter how much they bitch and moan. You people will not change anything here. Move along.

Why do people feel they are entitled to something like this? 2-year contract is a 2-year contract and you agreed to everything it brought once you signed it. There is nothing people can do. AT&T won't do squat, and if a legal battle arises, I assure you as the sun rises, the people will loose as the terms of a future upgrade are clearly stated in that contract you signed.

Yes, but you paid full price for your first generation, not $199

1st Gen iPhone owners paid full price for the iPhone and no subsidy was given. When the 3G came out, a subsidy was given, thus, the 2-year contract upgrade policy from AT&T kicks in. Next time read the whole contract before bitching.

I think I'm going to start a Twitter petition to get a date with Scarlett Johannsen. That at least has a chance of succeeding and I feel more entitled to her charming company than to a cheap cell phone.

Great! Since you morons want to keep bringing this up, you CAN upgrade and buy a new iPhone for $699, the same as the original iPhone purchase price.

Massive spelling mistakes aside, I can tell what's clearly wrong with your post:
Wait for it....
Ready?
Those of us who upgraded from 2G to 3G DID NOT PAY A SUBSIDIZED PRICE FOR OUR 2G PHONES. Get it? I aid full price for a 2G and then was grandfathered into the 3G upgrade price. People who bought a 3G paid subsidized pricing and got a 2 year contract. One year later you expect to not only be released from the 2 year contract you signed but also be eligible for upgrade pricing. I'm not sure how this can be more clear....

You're probably right- People who would sign a petition arguing that they are entitled to a free Ferrari are probably at least old enough to imagine driving some day.
