Hey guys, I'm aware that there have been several posts on how to enable tethering on AT&T and o2 Contract Customers but none for those on O2 PAYG.
Here my guide on how to tether at no extra cost:
1. First of all, completely uninstall iTunes if you have version 8.2 or later installed. This is because the final version of iTunes will not allow you to update your phones carrier file.
2. Next download and install iTunes 8.2 beta pre release.
You can get this from here: iTunes 8.2 Beta Download (http://www.ihackintosh.com/2009/04/iphone-30-beta-4-and-itunes-82-download-available-to-developers/)
3. Next Download the hacked o2 PAYG icpp Carrier File.
I have attached the file to this post: 175675
It can also be downloaded from here: o2_uk PAYG ipcc Download (http://media.tig.gr/download/o2_uk.ipcc)
4. Load up iTunes 8.2 Beta and connect your iphone to your computer. On the main iPhone page where you can choose "check for update" and "Restore", hold the shift key and click on the "check for update" button.
5. A window will open. In the "file type" drop down box choose the "*.icpp" type and locate the o2_uk.icpp file you have downloaded. Click "ok" and for a seccond it should pop up and say updating carrier settings.
6. After the update finishes, turn your iPhone off and on and now the "Internet Tethering" option should be available under "Settings -> General -> Network".
Extra Notes.
Also make sure you have the correct o2 PAYG settings in "Cellular Data Network".
These are as followed: (o2 PAYG only)

Hope that helps

If you do this, do O2 charge you?

No its free, just like browsing the web on your phone, but you can see it on your pc screen. It depends on what data plan you have on your phone. I have the unlimited web and wifi bolt-on with o2 PAYG so its free for me. But if it usually costs you to go on the internet on your phone then it will cost you the same when tethering.

Hmmm, that's not what it says here.

I take it your phone is jailbroken? I wonder whether O2 have the power to crack down on unofficial tethering? If not, a jail-breakin I will go!
Please let us know if you get any stern letters or big data charges from them. ;-)

Do you have the O2 payg sim card that's specifically for the iPhone, or do you you have something like a simplicity sim? Just wondered if you can confirm if the 3G speed is ok, because others have said that the speed is slower than if you had a contract sim.

Worked perfect on my Iphone 3G PAYG on O2 with OS 3.0 GM.

They cannot tell you are doing it physically, but if suddenly your data usage goes sky high, then they will work it out.
What they will then do is charge per mb.
Also as a side you do not have to downgrade to 8.2 beta of iTunes. The is a seting your can change it's on this forum and also via google

Yes, like lots of video streaming. To be honest though, I will hardly ever use tethering even though i have enabled it.
Aslo, I wonder why o2 are not offering an "official" method for PAYG users to tether. It can clearly work.

Because they want you in an 18 or 24 month contract.
I bought an PAyGO iphone. I stuck my work o2 sim in it and everything works. I have mms, tethering, and I get an sms from o2 saying that if I am not in an iphone tarrif I am missing out. In reality I am only missing visual voicemail. So no real biggy there.

What do I need to do to get this working on a Simplicity sim? the help.benm.at website doesn't seem to have an option for O2 Simplicity.

yeah I'd really like to know this too. I tried both o2 contract options on help.benm.at and I get an error saying no modem connected when trying to connect on my netbook.

i just did those steps exactly and can confirm tethering works, however, mms was disabled in the process.
I re-entered the mms settings into the network settings tab and that got mms to work again but then tethering disappeared.
Any help please?

Ok, I've followed these steps exactly, But now I'm just getting an option that says 'set up internet tethering' and when I tap that, I just get a message saying 'To enable tethering, please contact o2'.
Any ideas where i've gone wrong here?
Anybody else had the same problem?
Help greatly appreciated!
Cheers.

I noticed yesterday that while playing around with Ultrasn0w I managed to get the tethering options to show up with my o2 sim card in my phone. I had just taken out an Orange sim card (i think) and upon inserting my o2 sim (default with my iPhone back in October last year) it reset all my data settings to 'idata.o2.co.uk' instead of 'payandgo.o2.co.uk' and tethering was showing up.
However, 3G and MMS was not working and I didnt actually test tethering.
What is the 'idata' address used for? Contract or simplicity. definately not payg

They have speed issues of Pay and Go. Maybe that's the reason, they don't offer it. And Pay and Go customers probably aren't that interested in general anyway; hardly any of them have even noticed the speed issues.

I tried this today, with my nice shiny iPhone 3GS on O2 pay and go and it works well. My only modification to the instructions would be to use the command below in the terminal rather than downloading the beta.
defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

How do I return the phone back to the way it was (ie remove that carrier file)?

Am so tempted by the 3GS but I have an original 8GB version 1 ipHone on OS 23 jailbroken and it's working fine, I use the simplicity deal on o2 and the speed is no less than my friends on the official tarriff. However he not long ago got the 3g and that can be faster when on 3G.
So wether to buy a 3GS P&G and pop my simplicity chip in or not...£440 is a lot of dosh for a phone, but if tethering works then that would be brilliant for me.

Guys I having a problem when trying to load the o2 config file. When I click the "check for update" button I did hold shift but instead of getting a pop-up window asking for a file, I get a message saying that "Iphone software 3.0 is the current version"
Below are a few details of what I am using
IPhone 3G 16gig - Iphone OS 3.0
ITunes 8.2b7(10)
Any help would be appreciated :)

So, how do you use this tool? I've just fired up terminal, stuck in the code, and it's done nothing (as far as I'm aware of).
So once this code is executed, what steps to I take to enable Tethering?
(I've an iPhone 3G with 3.1.2 and PAYG O2)
Thanks!
