"I carry my Pre in my pocket and have done the same with other Palm devices for years. I have never used screen protectors and never had a scratch. How could this happen unless you carry this in a pocket with other hard/sharp objects? If that is the case, I don’t know what else you would expect. It would be like closing your laptop with a hammer in it and then blaming the manufacturer for a crappy screen.
If your pocket was otherwise empty or only contained other soft objects, perhaps you have a legitimate gripe.
My two cents…"

The guy wasn't careful and was an idiot. A lot of people have cracked their iPhone screens, does that mean it's all Apple's fault for making a phone that can be damaged?

Quite sad when they bash him about sharp objects... I dont know about you... but I dont have a thousand pockets to make sure I have a free pocket for everything I own.
One of the main reasons I bought an iPhone was for the glass screen. Apple got it right on that engineering decision.

This guy needs to take better care of his things. It shouldn't get scratched like that in a pocket of clothing unless he had his keys or something there as well.
However the amount of people saying that Apple payed him to say this is astounding!

It's called a case.
Anyone who puts their phone, whether it's a Pre or iPhone, in their pocket with sharp objects is an idiot and deserves whatever happens to their phone.

Does the case cover the front of the phone? No... unless you use some cheap screen protector. Fact is... they can make these screen pretty damn hard to scratch in which Apple has done. I carry mine with keys ALL THE TIME and I dont have ANY scratches.
And ****... what about people living in the UK where they use coins more often than the US... I hate to think that I'm that anal that I have an "iPhone pocket" and a everything else pocket...

A guy I work with has a case for his iPhone with a flip down thing that covers the screen, and I keep mine in a case with a belt clip that protects the screen.

And I'm damn sick and tired of people like you who post nothing about how the Pre is a piece of crap failure and yet nearly every problem the Pre has had so far, the iPhone had when it first came out.

Indeed it does.... I have an expensive phone, I don't want it to be damaged, so I keep it protected somewhere where it won't be damaged, and therefore, it doesn't get damaged and I don't post on a blog blaming Apple for all the world's problems because my phone got damaged.

The real question is why folks on MacRumors insist on obsessing over the Pre and post any negative article like the one you did above.
If you love your iPhone, why do you care what's going on with the Pre?
Palm has plenty of satisfied customers.

Would like to see how the Palm Pre survives this treatment:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkXlriABfOo - the torture test that the iPhone went through by PC World - the simulated pocket test amongst other things...
It's a legitimate fail - just as having a non-capacitive touchscreen would be seen as.

I'm not a Palm Pre apologist, genius.
I'm someone who respects it as a decent product and one which is bringing good competition to the iPhone.
Competition is something you all should want to make Apple products better.

the writer's point was that he treated it like all of his other cell phones (i.e. no case on any of them) and had worse scratches. The people saying apple paid him to write this are idiots. Even if apple were that unethical, they just don't care that much.

Are you kidding me?
Are you justifying the dumb engineering on Palm's part? The whole phone IS A SCREEN, just like the iPhone. And that is why it is an essential part of engineering the device to make it less prone to scratches as possible. Apple went with specially coated glass from a German company that is almost 100% scratch resistant.
It is a VERY VERY typical scenario that you have a phone with other objects in your pocket. A product is designed to fit in your life style, not designed so you change your habits to use it. This is one of the THINGS that Apple gets right that other companies can't wrap their head around.

What is wrong with you people?
90% of phones use plastic displays. Yet you're acting like Palm has committed some huge wrong here.
First of all, they're a company that was on the verge of bankruptcy before the Pre. Maybe they didn't have the finances quite yet for a device with a glass display. Hmm?
And second, Palm doesn't hide the fact that it's plastic. Customers who are concerned about scratches (many people aren't) can easily buy an InvisibleShield or something similar, just like many iPhone owners do, to protect the screen.

I don't consider that normal use. I've had several plastic screened phones and none have ever looked like that. Why don't people take care of their things?

Is this a surprise? Plastic is nowhere near as hard as glass, so it will scratch quite a lot easier. I think Apple made the right choice using glass for the touchscreen on the iPhone. I think Palm made the wrong choice using plastic. For a premium device, I expect premium materials. I don't need excuses for how I should take better care of my stuff. If I can't drop it in my pocket without damaging the screen, that's a serious issue.

That original article has "SERIPTICIOUS INDUSTRY FRAUD" written all over it. C'mon as stupid looking as the palm pre is , and as bad of a form factor and size it has is enough to let it kill itself. It doesn't need any help from this guy with his obviously fake intentional scratches perpetrating as normal wear. This article actually makes apple look bad since anyone with half a brain can see that this is an insider stunt .. most likely being done by some noob apple agent who just graduated from college and thinks he/she is soooo smart. NOW.. if I where to try and perpetrate some industry fraud I would have done something like separate the keyboard from the screen and say "hey look, the slidey movable keyboard piece came off. Since that is an inherit trait of the device where as a screen is pretty generic and can be protected quite easily.

I don't carry a purse, put it in a pocket of the purse without keyes?
Would you park your car upside down in a pile of rocks?
It's not Apple/palm/nokia's fault if you scratch something you bought from them by slamming it around with some keys.
Take care of your stuff. Sure glass would have been great, but glass breaks. Nothing is indestructible and i wouldn't recommend treating it as such then being surprised.

Considering you can't drive your car upside down, your analogy is so off base it doesn't even apply. Hence you're missing the point. They could have engineered it better... that is all. Making devices that fit around ones daily lives is more likely to attract a customer rather than making a device they have to be wipe with a diaper to make sure its ok at all times.

I don't know if anyone has pointed this out to you yet but here goes. You have become preoccupied with the Palm Pre and people who use them.
I know there are a few who come to this forum to talk up the Pre and put down the iPhone but they are few and far between.
This obsession you have to constantly slam the Pre and people who like them is not a healthy situation for you.
99.9% of the people who use this forum knows the iPhone is for ahead of it's competition so it seems from all of your many post on this subject that you are trying to convince yourself that it is.
This kind of obsession is not a healthy.

Sure glass may have been nicer. Then we'd have them shattered like the iphone and the complaints would be based around that. My point is simple, just take care of your stuff.
If the pre hardware doesn't suit people with an excess of keys or a lack of pockets fine. They can wait, webos will be on other hardware later.
