i drive a 1989 super white N/A supra
7M-GE engine 200 HP bare stock I-6 engine block, red-lines at 6500 rpm
Everything stock, except the muffler which i didnt install
horrible gas mileage, not to mention, high octane required.
RWD set up, non-LSD rear axles
soon to get a Toyota Corolla GTS - 1986, red with mild cosmetic damage.
128 HP stock engine 4A-GE 16V engine, red-lines at 7500 rpm
Car = barebone stock except the rims, but installing new ones (14x7).
Excellent gas mileage, about 30 miles a gallon using LOW octane.
RWD set up, non-LSD (soon to install an KAAZ LSD)
going to add full coilover conversion.

Is that engine still derived from the V-8 they bought from Buick in the 1960s? That's still in the Discovery, but I would say no for the Range Rover, as it's engine is a DOHC, and not a OHV.
Anyways, I usually drive a '94 Corsica. White, maroon interior (probably the most common combination). Also, the emergency brake doesn't work. The grip and release button aren't attached, and it needs to be pulled all the way back to be engaged

I own a '99 Saturn SL, and one of my hobbies is trying to modify the engine to get the craziest gas mileage possible. The stock engine is a 1.9 liter inline 4 single overhead cam with 100hp. I think the stock gas mileage is somewhere in the neighborhood of 25mpg city and 32mpg highway. However I've done the following modifications:
Bored-out throttle body
Larger-than-stock throttle plate
SPS cold-air intake with K&N radial air filter
Clay-polished extrude-honed intake manifold
Custom wider-than-stock exhaust headers
Custom high-flow muffler
NGK V-power spark plugs
Bosch spark plug wires
Just did a tune-up involving a new fuel filter, new oxygen sensors (pre and post catalytic converter), timing adjustment, and cleaned the throttle body with carb cleaner.
With 88 octane my baby gets 54mpg on the highway (70mph on flat road with cruise control) and about 44mpg city. Hell yeah biotches. I'm not feeling the sting of high gas prices. You can have your big SUVs and land rovers for all I care. ;)

and of course car made for the autobahn...at 150km/h you feel "man this is slow"
only 122 HP @ 1500 kg but still 'wow'....my dad loves this car..

My parents were considering Land Rover/Range Rover until they talked to a few of their friends who own them.
Consumer reports and nearly every other auto rating magazine gave them terrible ratings. I hope you have better luck with yours than the people my parents know. You might become best friends with your mechanic and start paying him a monthly $500 allowance.
As for what I drive, it's currently a 1991 Toyota Camry. But, I am buying a 2004 VW Jetta TDI in early July. 50 miles per gallon and diesel fuel is cheaper. I can't wait! :D

2003 VW Golf TDI - diesel 90 hp engine.
5 door, manual transmission...
gets 38 mpg in dead cold winter city driving (in Michigan, so it's pretty cold) and i've gotten nearly 52 mpg in steady highway driving.
the diesel engine cost about a grand more than the standard but with Michigan regular gas around $2.20 and diesel being $1.80, that initial cost is being recovered rather quickly... :p

funny how you just mentioned that!
TDI is great. it could be a bit noisier when the engine is cold, but it's not as bad as older diesel engines. it sure is nice to get 600 miles out of one tank.
my standard reply when someone asks me if it's hard to find diesel stations (it's not, just go near a highway) is that it's certainly harder than getting regular gas, but i only need to look for one half as often as regular cars getting 25 mpg!

I thought I would list them all, even if only for my own enjoyment. Here they are, in order, with years of ownership and fate suffered, as best as I can remember....
'89 Porsche 944S2 (current ride) ('03- )
'03 VW Jetta Wagon (wife's car) ('03- )
'01 VW Golf TDI ('01-'03) traded for the wagon
'73 Porsche 914 1.7 ('96-'03) sold it on eBay
'88 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa ('95-'01) sold back to dealer
'90 Isuzu Amigo ('90-'01) blew the head gasket @180Kmi, sold it on eBay
'66 VW Transporter ('86-'87) engine blew up, car impounded (long story)
'85 Toyota MR-2 ('85-'90) lease ended
'82 Toyota Corolla SR-5 ('82-'85) traded for the Mister Two
'74 Dodge Dart ? ('82) gift from the Aunt; gave it to my brother
'66 Chevy impala ('78-'79) bought it for $100 - was overpriced
'66 Opel Kadett ('78-'79) got it for free - was overpriced
That's it! Next car: 911C4 (from the 993 era, hopefully). The wife wants a Toureg - maybe the diesel will be sold here and we could afford to fill the tank....

Haha, no no, I mean, I use D3 to get acceleration to pass, at times. I would never even consider using D3 ALL the time on the highway. It's just when I hit those 30-40mph zones, that using D3 is crucial (passing in 4th gear, when you are starting at around 30mph, is not going to work all the time). And most of the time, i leave it in D3 for everyday, local driving. It keeps you honest too, b/c if you go anywhere over 45mph, you revs start hitting 3.5-4k (begins to get louder). You hear your engine? You're probably speeding *_*

Although it gets 12/17 gas milage you people do not understand that here in New England when you get 3ft of snow its a little hard to drive around in a little electric car lol.
This is not a valid excuse to buy a huge gas sucking car. There are plenty of cars out there that would do fine in snow without having to have a V8 engine in them. Subaru and Volvo cars some to mind. I used to drive in 3 feet of snow in my little Nissan pickup with rear wheel drive. Snow chains are a wonderful invention. They take about 1 minute to put on and take off so they are not too inconvienent. If you want to drive an SUV, dont make excuses for it, just enjoy the car you chose and enjoy the consequences of owning a bigger car.

97 Saturn SC2 (http://homepage.mac.com/candan9019/PhotoAlbum29.html) . Nice car, good on gas, which is good since gas is so expensive in Canada at least compared to what I paid in the US. It's too low though.
I'd love to have a 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD (http://www.daimlerchrysler.ca/CA/04/EN/JEEP/1,,CA-04-EN-JEEP-PRE_LAUNCH-LIBERTY,.html) . North America is finally getting more diesels.

Another Saab driver over here.
I drive my moms '96 900S with sunroof, 6CD changer, pretty much standard. It's silver, tan leather interior.
I haven't driven my car, which is an '85 900S, in green with tan cloth interior. It needs a head gasket replacement before I can drive it, plus it's a stick.
Both are non-turbo. My dad doesn't trust that the turbo is as reliable as the standard engine.

My 2000 Kia Sportage, purchased in mid-2003 for the bargain price of $5,000 at dealer auction, has so far cost me another couple grand for:
Dodgy (leaking) master brake cylinder - replaced
2x power steering belts - keeps flinging them off on the highway - so now i am not replacing the belts - hoping for some arm muscle development
Broken power window motor
Leaking door seal on driver's side - no fun in the rain
Overheating and dud A/C - sorted after a few visits, but still only gets maybe 1/2 as cold as the wife's Dodge Grand Caravan
I have owned /driven thus far:
1968 VW Beetle - 1294 motor - baby blue
1968 VW Beetle - white with 1776 twin-carb motor and very loud exhaust
198? Audi 100 - dark blue stick-shift 2000cc
198? Ford Mustang - stick shift 2500cc?
19?? Suzuki Swift GS - rapid little red 1300cc
1986 Hyundai Elantra - blue 1500cc - crap car
1997? Peugeot 106 XSi - indecently rapid EFI 1600cc 5-speed
1994 Peugeot 205 XS - 1360cc 5 speed - my first (so far only) rally car
1994 Mitsubishi L200 - dark blue 2500cc turbo-diesel
For my next car I'm hoping to get a VW Golf or Passat TDi

Yes, but I think you missed the point of his post.
I'm 23, I just bought an 02 Audi A4 3.0 with no help from the family. Maybe you should consider that not everyone is reaching into daddy's pocket to get something nice.
I know someone like that as well, but for some people, the money they earn goes towards paying for school AND their car, whereas some people only have to save up to pay for their own car. Yes, saving money is still involved, but when you're not responsible for other expenses involving school or rent, its a different story.
I don't drive often because I never stay in the same country, and I went to school and didn't drive my parent's car, but they own 2 Volvo's: A 1992 Volvo 940XLE or something, and a 1998 Volvo S70.....awesome car. Not by today's standards, but I really don't see why anyone needs a car faster than an equivalent 238 hp S70 T5 SE (T= turbo). Sorry, I just really really really really miss driving. :(

iJon, I haven't done any mods really, I put a set of good off road tires on it and tinted the windows, but that is it. I have been eyeballing a 2 inch lift for it and perhaps a brush guard with a winch on it. I got high centered on a log last year and had to use some serious manual labor to get off of it :D
Also, do you happen to know whether or not they are making a manual transmission in it, or is it just going to be automatc? Also, do you know if it is only going to be available in the limited, or will we be able to get sport version with the diesel in it?
gMac, I appreciate those links. I'll check them out and also give then to a buddy of mine who owns one. :)

I must say I was surprised to hear that some of you drivers in the US do drive diesels, I just didn't think that happened. I figured big trucks, etc would have diesel engines, but I didn't think many manufacturers offered diesel options - though I did read a little while ago that Mercedes were bringing out a diesel E-class in the 'States.
Here in the UK (and more widely in Europe) few cars nowadays do not have at least 1 diesel option, with some having a few. There are a few factors for that: diesel is almost as cheap as unleaded (about 82.9p per litre up here in Glasgow), and you always get better mileage out of it. Also, in the UK company cars are very popular, and recently the government introduced a new tax on company car owners, and it would appear that diesel engines perhaps attract less of a premium.
Every petrol station here also sells diesel, as you really couldn't not.
How easy is it to find filling stations with diesel pumps in North America? Would you guys say that more people are taking up diesel engines because of rising fuel prices (though really, you're fuel is vastly cheaper than ours :( )?
Just something which I would be interested to know!
Cheers!

yeah i was excited to see jeep offering a turbo disel liberty. fuel economy of a v-4, speed of a v-6 and tourque of a v-8.
as for the filling stations, almost every station in my town has disel, so it's not uncommon. i guess they have their own little pump stashed away somewhere. all the gas stations have the disel sign up with the price along with the other gas prices, but know that i think of it i've never seen the pump at the station. oh well ims sure it's there.

my standard reply when someone asks me if it's hard to find diesel stations (it's not, just go near a highway) is that it's certainly harder than getting regular gas, but i only need to look for one half as often as regular cars getting 25 mpg!
Never knew that. In the UK I have never seen a petrol station that didn't have both Diesel and petrol on sale. Oh, and to recover your extra

4x2 Toyota RAV 4 L.
For me , its a great little SUV> gas mileage is top notch for its size and I get the feel of up high driving without the penalty of a huge SUV. I can park anywhere and make U-turns with no need for reverse. It handles well, and comfortably holds 4 adults, and 5 if its skids in the back.
Downside- V4 is slightly underpowered on hills an freeway from zero to top speed. Once at speed its smooth sailing.
Size, its too small for moving large stuff, but more than any sedan.

Got this a few weeks ago, SEAT Toledo V5, 2.3 litre V5 VW engine (the car is a golf based model) now at 185bhp, 0-60mph in 5.6 seconds, top end around 150mph, goes like greased weasle-***** as my dad used to say. It eats BMW's for breakfast (OK, the M3's are still a handful, but they cost the earth).
Lovely build quality, standard everything and very cheap, I paid a tad over £7K for mine on a 01 plate with good milage.
The Leon hatchback is the popular one over here, but I think the saloon looks much better. Next stop, drop it about 5cm, and get some Koni shocks on....

Only 5-tire car ever made, and tends to bank right unless you have a steady hand. The other two are owned by Will Smith and Richard Simmons. I got mine in Latvia in 1996 from a dwarf (PC= "little-person") just north of Riga. I had it cut into 3 pieces and shipped FedEx. I carried the 2-stroke, 25 lb. engine home with me in my suitcase. Has the original paint job, most accurately described as "lardish". Runs on turpentine. Estimated eBay value: scrap
