I'm new here after getting an iPhone 3G Black 16Gb. I must say I find it amazing how obsessive and OTT some of you guys are about your iPhones! I must admit I see where your coming from but even for me returning a phone a number of times because one side of the glass is .5mm higher above the bezel than the other side...insane! Do you not feel embarassed going in to the store with such a tiny tiny issue?

No they don't. I don't know how anyone could ever just glance over the iPhone forums and think that buying one is a good idea.

Trust me, you can talk to people on here that insist that they are ENTITLED to a PERFECT iPhone because they spent so much money for it. Most people are just happy if it works the way it is supposed to, but the people you are referring to expect much, much more. I don't get it either.

Mine has a crack by the headphone jack ( happened by itself ), but other than that everything else works excellent! I won't exchange til there is a real issue that will hinder the performance, now I do believe receive a near perfect one because it's a brand new product but normal wear and tear shouldn't make you OCD

I have only gotten my phone swapped once and that was back in January (about a month after i bought it) because it had a HUG screen leak on the left side. I didnt want my phone to get f-ed up just by me picking it up with wet hands and water getting into it. Since then i havent gone back. I dont really care about the outside that much.
Currently my phone is starting to leak agin, but its small and i dont really care that much anymore like i did the first month. ill just wait till my screen and housing gets a little more scratched to go complain about the leak and get a new one:p

Say what you want but when you pay $600 to $700 for an item don't you want it without manufacture defects? If you buy a brand new LCD or Plazma tv and you see dust behind the screen, wouldn't you return it? If you just bought a car and the dash got some cracks in it a week after you bought it wouldn't you expect it to be fixed? If you bought a brand new laptop and the buttons came off wouldn't you expect to get a new one? If you say no to any of those then you're an idiot and please don't reproduce. Why should it be any different with the iPhone?

We are sane. It's just that our definition of sanity may be a bit different from yours.
Dunno who decides whose sanity is better though. If you are 100% sure that you are the more sane, then maybe that's a problem in itself.

Jul 9, 2009, 07:29 PM
*raises hand* Sane! lol
I also never understood the reason for exchanging a phone so many times over the minor issues. I still have my 3G that I got on day 1. Sure, it has a small light leak, some dust under the glass and its own little intricacies, but its mine and I know that nothing would ever stay perfect forever.
I also wonder how these people have so much time on their hands to be hanging out in apple stores so often, combined with work/school, other obligations, family, etc. I would definitely be one of those people embarrassed to be seen in an apple store with nothing but problems over and over again. People in retail have a name for those customers :p

I think it's reasonable to expect a phone free of defects. The issue is the generous range in what's a defect vs acceptable tolerance in a mass produced consumer device.

I mean I agree that when you buy a product you are hoping for quality. But, to say that the keys didn't fall of my Razr a day after getting it back in 2004 would be an understatement. Also if I purchased a plasma, I hope the manufacturer would spell it correctly.

Quite a few of us paid a couple hundred dollars less for our phones, and they are, in fact, free of defects.
But let me ask you this: If you truly have exchanged your device 4, 5, 6, 7 times, finding flaws in each and every one, would that not be a sign that perhaps it's time to cut your losses, get a refund, and find a different device?
There's the Palm Pre, for example. You could luck out and get a perfect, flawless, Palm Pre. Or, you might (http://discussion.treocentral.com/palm-pre/191522-sprint-giving-out-new-batteries-random-shutdowns.html) have fun (http://discussion.treocentral.com/palm-pre/191845-think-i-just-found-major-bug-callout.html) dealing with (http://discussion.treocentral.com/palm-pre/191533-do-not-remove-your-battery-cover.html) a totally different (http://discussion.treocentral.com/palm-pre/190847-touch-screen-not-working.html) set of bugs (http://discussion.treocentral.com/palm-pre/191650-kept-opening-blank-cards.html) and defects (http://discussion.treocentral.com/palm-pre/190122-crazy-wifi-problems.html)...

No, the above mentioned solution would be way too logical, and complaining about your Palm Pre on this forum would seem useless. Apple shipped millions of phones, of those I'm sure there were quite a few defects, but I imagine the population on this forum is way likelier to complain then those that don't partake. Also, I don't think very much of the other population would notice some of the minute differences.

I agree with OP.
However, it's Apple and AT&T's own fault to charge excessively high price for iPhone. When people pay $600~$700 for a phone (AT&T users end up paying way more than that; yeah, subsidy my butt), people tend to want a perfect product.
It's really funny seeing people here often fight on behalf of Apple or AT&T; they even defend the high prices and high fees as if they are being paid by those two companies. Yet, those people won't accept anything but perfection when it comes to their own iPhone. They are happy to pay whatever the price Apple and AT&T tells them to pay as long as their iPhone is flawless.

I guess your first line says it all. What sane person would spend $700 on a friggin cellphone? And don't say people with a lot of money, because they usually have much money because they are financially responsible and buying a $700 cellphone is not. And furthermore, why are you comparing a cellphone to a plasma TV, a laptop, or a car anyway?

Interesting Reading guys... I'm actually a bit surprised at how easy apple swap them. I would have thought some issues are stone wall replacements bit others no way! I have very poor wifi myself ( speeds low and pings high) but I'm going to wait until 3.1 before I even consider getting apple involved. I hope the software fixes it as I seem to have a good one. It's a very well-known issue that the 3G/3GS plastic casing, especially the whites, is prone to cracking during normal use.
I can definitely appreciate a bit of OCD around Apple products :o
I don't think it should be that surprising that you find people in the iPhone section of an Apple forum who are a bit obsessed with their device.

I understand wanting a white device (although personally I would never get one) but if it's a known issue that white cases are especially prone to cracking, that would be more than enough info to make me choose black just to avoid the hassles and frustration.
Life's too short - I've got more important things to do than hang out at the apple store every weekend becoming "friends" with a genius.

That's fine but remember, it's only a cellphone. Use it like one. It's going to get scratched. I laugh at the people who get so upset when the chrome trim gets scratched and want to exchange it for that. I laugh when people drop it and the glass breaks and they are shocked when they learn the warranty won't cover it.
I have a friend who is so obsessed with the battery life. He is upset when he has 78% battery life after listening to music for five hours while at work.
Ok, I gotta get ready for my Genius appointment, the cord on my Apple headset is bent and is bugging me. Think they'll replace it?

i agree with the OP. I have had the same iPhone since the day i got it. I love it. A Lot. I have slight light leak on one side, scratched to buggery around the bezel and the back casing and most of the plating around headphone jack has chipped off. Its all about character!
What really irritates me is the fact that some people actually look for problem so they can take their phone to an Apple shop and get a shiny new one. People posting threads (and yes, this was one a little while ago) along the lines of 'what fault will get me a replacement iPhone' really annoys me. It seems like its getting nothing short of fraud. There used to be a sense of community between people who own Apple products, but i dont want to be part of a group of people where an albeit small minority are dishonest, devious and just downright cheap.

I wanted to mention something really quick about the cracking.
Apple didn't invent sef-destructive plastic, but when you plug headphones into the headphone port, you don't expect the plastic to crack. Apple should have designed that a little better.
Am I insane for downgrading back to 2.2.1 to get better performance, enhanced UI and smoother animations? Yup. I miss copy and paste and push, but I'm more interested in having a bug free phone right now.
Oh and by the way... what was up with 3.0's iPod app? Every time I paused and left the iPod app and started it back up, it would be on the "Songs" list screen instead of what was last playing. That's just annoying because I wanna just hit the play button, but then I would have to hit "Now Playing" and let it scroll over, and then hit play.

Or even more insane - the people complaining about the people complaining about the people complaining. ;)
Just for the record, are you officially complaining? Or, are you just making an astute observation. ;)
Well I can take an iPhone 3GS with a minor defect, for a HALF PRICE! ;)
But, there is an even greater hidden price; the 2 year contract. That was the deal breaker for me.

The HALF PRICE ment also the phone bills! ;)
And if there´s a minor defect with the iPhone 3GS when I get it, hell yeah I´m taking it back! Call me insane! :p

I couldn't agree more OP. If you spend all your time worrying about what MAY be wrong with your phone. How can you ever possibly enjoy it?
Though I will say, if some of the stories are true (many I don't believe), and Apple is switching out 2, 3, or 4 phones for people as easily as claimed, they are as much to blame for the OCD as the owners of the phones.
Again, it all depends on whether you believe everything you read or not.
It cracks me up. It's like people on the internet, have never heard about the internet.

Yeah like the guy who posted about going to different Apple stores to examine the demo models screen in order to form a basis to compare his and other phones on this forum.
Seriously, step away from the phone.

My screen is "yellow"
My chrome bezel isn't "perfectly flush" with the screen
My white iPhone is discoloring
The plastic back on my iPhone is scratching
My battery doesn't last all day even though I have every option TURNED ON
I'm obviously paraphrasing, but this is just a sample of the complaints I've read in these forums. Honestly, I don't understand how Apple allows returns on some of these "problems". I have an iPhone 3GS bought on launch day. If I look at it under a microscope I might find something wrong with it... BUT IT'S JUST A PHONE!
I had to go through 8 different Palm Treo's my first year with Verizon. After switching to the Blackberry Curve I went through two of those. The quality of the iPhone blows everyone else out of the water, and the build quality is much higher because it's a relatively simple industrial design with few mechanical/moving parts that could go wrong (i.e., keyboards, buttons/backlights, etc.).
Is my screen yellow? No, but then again I don't have anything else to compare it with. I just held it up next to my 17" MBP and it's obviously whiter and brighter than my MBP display. Does this mean there's something wrong with my MBP display and I should rush in and have it replaced? I am a busy business owner who simply does not have the time to obsess over every little blemish, stain, scratch, or screen tint issue. I bought my iPhone so that I could actually USE it to increase my productivity, not to treat it as if it were a museum piece.
I am thrilled with my iPhone, so much so that I dumped Verizon. That's saying a lot for me. I am a very satisfied customer.

I must admit I see where your coming from but even for me returning a phone a number of times because one side of the glass is .5mm higher above the bezel than the other side...insane! Do you not feel embarassed going in to the store with such a tiny tiny issue?
logic says if you come to a forum where people usually go to discuss/find info about iphones and other problems such as defects, you're going to hear more stories about people returning their phones..
I'm sure the majority of iphone owners have never even been on a forum to discuss anything about their phone, whether it had a problem or not..

Because you cannot trademark a Genre so general, I know alot of people don't like it but I do for some reason, the design was so well done in my book that it could be the ***** channel and I'd still watch it haha, and if they just went with SiFi it would just look like a lazy move deleting one letter. Have you seen the other animations? Very Nice

I just don't know why they need to change it at all. It almost seems like they have to dumb it down or something.
I'm also not happy with the Sci Fi channel in general. It's become less sci-fi over the years and more paranormal and reality TV like. Anyway, I saw you had posted a lot on this, so I thought I'd ask, since my wife is NOT a sci-fi channel fan (more into HGTV :) ).

Yeah there is something off with a lot of people these days. I don't know if it is the abuse of alleged ADHD drugs that is now biting back or what... but the number of people who have these OCD attitudes with these devices boggled me for the last two plus years. There have always been a tiny fraction of eccentric people who are anal about all their stuff.. now though, there are a lot more... All these people with 5, 6, 7 returns and acting like that is somehow normal.
I would NEVER return something 5 times. If I had to return it twice, I would likely not want another one... It seriously has to be inline with a clinical definition of some kind of mental condition. It certainly is not normal, nor can it be considered healthy.

What's more insane, complaining or complaining ABOUT everyone complaining?seriously this is a two page post full of people complaining about people who complain. Doesn't anyone work? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Don't like it? Then don't read the posts.
People are not complaining about the complaining for the most part. They are marveling at the ridiculous things people do when they exchange their phones over and over and over again, and constantly chatter about it.
Regardless, the former is way more insane. It is not even a contest.

It cracks me up. It's like people on the internet, have never heard about the internet.
I believe it happens. Apple has one of the best return and service policies of any company out there. Which makes the whole thing more crazy when these same people finally get rejected by Apple and they fly off into a rant about how they have the worst service in the world and how they are going to fail.
My biggest issue with these people is they actually do impact it for the rest of us and result in more restrictive policies be put in place, which may legitimately be of use to us at some point, which ultimately get altered or reduced because of the people who can't stop taking advantage of it.
I would add people act like $700.00 is their life savings. I am as frugal as anyone out there and I weigh most all of my purchases with a lot of scrutiny, but if I felt $700 was a lot of money to spend on a device like this, I would not buy one. So perhaps some people need to stop over-reaching and buying things they probably can not afford, thus freak out if anything is seemingly wrong with it to any degree. It is like the kids who used to try and keep their new sneakers clean for as long as possible. It is a losing battle and one that can and will suck the enjoyment out of what the device or item is intended to do.
Another issue I have is a lot of times people try to exchange phones for things they did. I think that is just flat out of line. Any scratch or nick or tear that you actually caused that does not impact the use of the phone should not be returned. Learn to take better care of your stuff. That is one of the weird ironys here, these people are so anal about their phones but they seemingly treat them like crap. I have had my original iphone since day one, and my 3G since day 1, and they are both in excellent condition. Never had to return them for any reason. There are no defects, cracks or scratches on them. I hear these stories of people dropping their phones and the rest and it comes from pure carelessness.

What?! MTV is horrible! UGH I'm 21 and I hate the stupid "reality" or dating shows they have THERE'S NO MUSIC!!! IT MAKES NO SENSE:mad:
I don't think SyFy is headed that way, I think they are just trying to revamp "SciFi" and put interesting shows in between the Original Series. You have to think of it from a business standpoint of owning a network like this with a certain genre, because if they hadn't re-energized their line of shows and design, we might not have a dedicated Science Fiction channel anymore. After the reality fad is gone I'm sure we'll get more shows.

SciFi is rather generic and likely un-trademark-able due to its common use.

Yeah putting wrestling on that scifi was the perfect trap for me. I thought "why on earth would they put something that dumb on scifi, what could possibly be scifi related in that show to be put on that channel." So I figured that if they had it, I needed to see what the big deal was. Needless to say, I am now a wrestling fan. :D
I'm also not a reality show fan, but I do enjoy Ghosthunters. The international version is not that great, but that is probably because I just don't care about the investigators as much.

I laugh at the people who get so upset when the chrome trim gets scratched and want to exchange it for that.
I am embarrassed to say that I was one of these people. Last week, I stupidly managed the scratch the chrome bezel on my shiny new 3GS. I was extremely bothered by it for a few days - I even considered trying to get it replaced.
I've come to my senses now though. It's a phone, and it's not going to stay perfect forever. Time for me to move on with my life!
I can certainly empathise with the people who worry about these things. It's a horrible feeling, and only time seems to make it go away.
