thats just one of many threads.. I've been meaning to do this for a while.
Don't get me wrong here, I love apple products and always try to get friends and family members into them (and gotten many of them satisfied for switching :) ) but dude, apple isn't some kind of eternal being. It seems (being subjective here) like everyone thinks apple books lasts forever. Every time I see someone saying something along the lines of, "Oh i still have my powebook running!" thats awesome but some other douche has to say, "Oh, baby ;) it's cause you got an apple laptop." JF*(# it irritates me that people say that because majority (NOT ALWAYS) of electronics' lifetime depends on the user.

Now everyone's gonna reply telling me how their Dell or Hp's died so fast etc... BOTH my brother and sister's have had their dell for 5+ years and I know that that dell is alive because they take care of their stuff. I know couple of my college friends who also had their dell for that long too. I can't say for HP or Sony or any other company but I'm pretty sure if any of those PC owners were OCD like apple owners, their pc's could last just as long.

It just happens to be that people who own apple laptops care about aesthetics, electronics, etc.. more than the average user. Hence, their apple laptops are taken better care of and last longer.

Am I saying PCs last longer? No way. But apple laptops last longer though? Again, no. It all depends on luck and the owner. There are plenty of faults on this forum and plenty of faults on the dell forum I'm sure. I'm just sick of all the people mentioning how apple laptop's somehow just last longer for some magical reason.

edit:
its just a rant, i still love apple products.

Agreed and get your act together, sukanas. :D

Apple computers definitely do last forever, I've had mine for a few years now. Couldn't help myself.

So far my Mac works and I'm content; that's all I need.

And this thread will do nothing but end up causing trouble.

Dude, you hit the nail on the head on one part and COMPLETELY missed the boat on another.

Apple laptops do NOT last any longer than anybody else's - you're right; its all in how we take care of our stuff. I had my last Dell lappie for SEVEN years before I sold it on eBay. My sister had her last HP lappie for SIX years before she handed it down to our Mom, who still uses it. We take care of our stuff, so yes, if physically lasts longer no what brand it is.

HOWEVER, I think you're not getting what many people mean when the imply that Apple products last longer. Most people are talking USABLE life. For most average users, a six or seven year old PC is useful only has a boat anchor. However, I know many people who use Macs that old everyday w/no issues.

There are two sides to this and I think you completely missed the most important one. Again, this is just my opinion - if you don't agree, I don't care. :)

(And I understand its a rant... mine is too, kinda. :D)

Is there a point to this thread other than to stir up trouble?

Nothing is immortal and eternal...

Same hardware in both, Macs and PCs = Same problems. If you think BMW lasts longer than Kia, you're wrong.

Oh wow, I never thought about that... very true
I'd have to simply agree

This might be the most pointless thread I've read on MacRumors to date. ANd there are a LOT of dumb threads here.

What does this have to do with "buying tips"? I wish these forums were better moderated and crap like this was removed more frequently.

If you think BMW lasts longer than Kia, you're wrong.

Not sure on the specific stats for those brands, but surely you're not suggesting that all car brands experience problems at the same rate or last the same amount of time before needing replacement?

That was just a metaphor or something. Sorry if you didn't catch my meaning. Basically, you buy BMW because you think it lasts longer and is better than Kia because it's more expensive. Some BMW fanboy can say it's eternal.

Anyway, forget it. Nothing is eternal

That analogy doesn't really work because apple literally does use the exact same parts as an equivalent pc ie the Core 2 Duo. if you think Kia is using the same parts as BMW your insane!

Nothing except your soul that is, and if you are PC user, well you know where you will end up.

The majority of computers are dumped because either they've been clogged up with malware, crapware, viri or haven't been defragged for several years.

There's a smaller subset that have a minor hardware issue that could be fixed if the user had the knowledge or inclination, not to just buy a shiny new one.

Mac's since OS X have had little in the way of the 3 software types above and don't need defragging and as they are more expensive i would say the owners are more inclined to investigate if their hardware issue can be fixed cheaper than replacing the whole computer. Which lets face it, if you've gone the Mac route you'll have a significant investment in.

Dell deals for $400 laptops or $500 desktops lead to a disposable culture were it's generally less pain for the user to just buy a new one.

As shown by the numerous 2nd hand computer shops/fairs. At least in the UK that is.

Perhaps not, however, Kia's new plants are some of the most advanced automated facilities in the world. For the BMWs and Kias manufactured in the U.S. I'd bet the defect rate on the automated Kia plant is lower than that of the less automated BMW plant. That said, initial engineering and manufacturing are not the only factors contributing to the longevity of a car or computer. Scheduled maintenance, climate, average use, etc have a lot to do with how well anything holds up over time.

I rented a BMW and drove it hard over the Swiss and Austrian Alps. After two weeks it drove and sounded terrible. If you take a Mac and play Windows games daily in a hot room for a few years it may not last as long as a pampered system used for Word and web browsing for a decade.

Price and style isn't everything but personal preference is. Buy what YOU like and don't worry about what others think.

Cheers,
