When it comes to digital camcorders, there is a big difference in manufacturer quality. I can whole heartedly recommend Sony - top quality, ease of use, and a product that won't break down. $499-599 is the range for their entry level mini-dv cameras. i have seen almost all of their models in use (except for the real high end ones) and can say that they are definitely worth any extra $$ you might have to fork out.
