I think I might be going crazy. For wattage, space and noise reasons, I'd like to configure a *Book (iBook, PowerBook, whatever) as a lightweight PPC server.

Here's what I WON'T need (which hopefully lowers my cost):

A working screen (however an external monitor connection must work); detach it if you want.
Battery (it'll be plugged-in all the time)
Any specific OS (it'll run Linux by the time I'm done)
AirPort (again, plugged-in all the time)
A working keyboard (as long as USB keyboards work)
A working touchpad (as long as USB mice work)

Here's what I WILL need:

Ethernet jack
AC Adaptor
Hard drive (at least 2GB)
RAM (at least 128MB)
CPU (at least G3, any clock speed above 0MHz ;-))
All the non-frilly, normal components (e.g. video chip) that make the thing work.
Relatively quiet when not under heavy use (i.e. fans only run when necessary)
Relatively low power usage (anything under 60W is great; below 30W is killer)

I'd like to keep the price below $200 (since this is mostly an experiment), though if a compelling, reputable offer were higher, I would definitely consider it.

Honestly, I'm not sure how well *Books work in a 24/7 environment, but it seemed worth trying. I might put my AppleCare'd 867MHz G4 PowerBook through the stress test just for fun. Who knows, maybe a G4 Cube is closer to what I'm looking for. But it's worth a try.

Anyone got some seriously crippled 'Books they're looking to sell, or know where I might be able to find such abominations?

Thanks,

Tyler
