Need help so bad.. Iphone Cheap.. worth it?

So here is the deal. I am currently on a family plan with ATT and my wife is allowed to update to an iphone 3g 16gb for only $100 right now refurbished. Neither of us have an iphone now. I want it and she said i can get it but money is tight right now and I cannot afford the data plan. I am not trying to cheat att as we will both still be using our other phones. My question is can I use her upgrade to get the phone but then just use it as a itouch for the time being. I could use the wifi in the house or hotspots and as a nice ipod for $100. What way can I get around activating it and actually having to use it as an iphone? Please help me because it took me like 2 months to convince her to let me do this (she is the only one with a job right now) and now I will not be able to get it if I can't figure this out. Sorry, but you won't be able to do that without paying an ETF. You'd be better off waiting. I know times are tough, but you don't need the phone that bad. My opinion from being where you are at one time in my life.

why not just get an ipod touch? i mean you can get one from craigs for fairly cheap or after a few months of what you would have paid for the iphone plan

I'm surprised you're married, which by default suggest you are an adult. All roads lead to you being quite immature.

Get the free AT&T phone because you cannot afford a data plan. Based on your above post you'll do fine in the PC world. ;)

Insulting people is only going to get you surliness in return. Why don't you get an iPod touch, and then just sell it when you are ready to get an iPhone with a data plan?

Unless you buy the iPhone second hand (not from AT&T) you will have to pay for a data plan. That is the simple answer to the question you originally asked.

if you dont want life advice, dont spill your life story and saying how it factors into your decison:cool:

we only know what you told us and that was money is tight for you. why even tell us that then?

why not just ask "can i use an iphone minus the data plan" without providing any specifics like your wife is the only one working, money is tight, you cant afford it, etc

If you didn't want an answer based on your economic situation, you shouldn't have posted about it. You could have done a quick search of the forum and found all kinds of threads answering this question.
