View Full Version : Powerbook & iPod Education Special

I've just gotten word that people who qualify for EDU pricing might want to wait a week or so before buying an iPod or Powerbook. The PBs were just updated, so I'm thinking it's an iPod / Powerbook special - like buy a Powerbook, get a half-price iPod!! I'm not 100% sure if it is aimed at the back-to-school market - or if it is exclusive to EDU customers.

This may be the start of back-to-school specials. Apple has done this in the past, so it wouldn't be out of the ordinary.

I have never made a rumors claim before - so I have ZERO credibility thus far. But, that also shows that I am careful about flaunting half-baked info. I believe in this - you can too if you like. All I'm saying is - if you are thinking of getting a new iPod - maybe wait a week. :D

[EDIT] THIS WAS JUST ANNOUNCED!! :D :D

I just ordered a 40 gig personalized iPod and it's on its way from China as I write this. If they release 4th gen. iPods I may break down and cry...

But thanks for the info! ;)

My personal opinion is that I don't think it will be a next generation of iPods. I think it will be a special to start diminishing the supply before a next generation in September/October - just in time for the pre-holiday shopping rush!!

Apple did a similar thing last summer. $200 off an iPod with purchase of a Powerbook, $100 off of an HP printer. I took full advantage of it and got a $69 iPod and a free HP 5150 printer.

Ah yes - that was the deal. Maybe Apple will add iSights to the list of discounted hardware when purchased with a powerbook. I think IM is still an integral part of the college experience.

Oh please, I need something more than "a couple of weeks." ;) Am about to buy a PowerBook from Apple's Edu Store (17" most likely), but extra booty certainly would be enticing. I just despise this waiting period -- I never know when to buy!

Well, keep in mind that I didn't say "a couple of weeks" - I would give it one week. If I'm wrong - so be it. But I wasn't saying the notorious "couple of weeks" - I'm saying one week. Absolute tops - two weeks from this past Tuesday.

My school is offering the 15" 1.5ghz/80gb/512 ram for $2149. The HD is 4200 rpm and the video card is the 64mb ATI Radeon. I was really interested in this, but I can't upgrade the HD, single DIMM ram, or video card and still get the extra $150 off compared to the normal educational discount.

Should I buy this one anyway? The only pro-app I use is PhotoShop and just do regular web surfing, iTunes, IM, write papers, digital camera work, and play the occasinal game of WarCraft III. I know this is more than what I need, but the extra HD and video memory is too good to pass up on.

I'm going to consider the iPod deal which is only through the Apple Store, so I'm not in any rush to purchase. I did the same thing last year for the 867 12" PB with a 10gb iPod.

Any thoughts?

(dumb question) "Do you get more money off if you go to school A or school B...or is it the same price for all schools...."?

Most schools (and all BTO) get a standard education discount. However...if your school moves enough Macs, Apple might give a special extra discount for buying in volume. For example, Penn/Drexel/University of the Arts in Philadelphia (three separate universities, one Apple volume buying deal) get special extra discounts because they move so many Macs. So check with your school before you buy.

To state it differently - all orders placed through the Apple education store have the same price - no matter what school you are from. Prices from the bookstore (et al) at each campus might be different. One of the more common deals is the same price as Apple Edu, but Applecare is $79/99 if you buy it at the same time as the computer.

Still, anytime someone says "just wait a couple of weeks" - I get skeptical. Something always happens if you wait long enough. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if iMacs came out in a week or two. But, that is just a personal opinion - I have nothing to back that up.

I do have more than a gut feeling about an Edu special involving Powerbooks (maybe iBooks too) and iPods. If it doesn't come to pass, you can flame me with left over 4th of July fireworks!

Heard that the retail stores will be carrying the 15" PB with 1gb RAM and the 80GB 5400rpm HDD as a ready to go out the door option.

I hope that this turns out to be true. Unlike the word that the iBook 14" was to be made availble with the SDD drive as an out the door option.

I know I'm waiting to buy a new laptop until a promotion appears. I speculate it'll be real soon--maybe tomorrow when the business week starts? July 1st was the rollover point where edu customers who had purchased a computer last year could get another with the discount. But I'll wait a week or a little more. It's possible Apple could make the business decision that 'book sales will be strong enough without a summer promotion, thanks to people who were planning to get an iMac, but need it before September. An iPod promotion would be nifty.

Since they're hyping the 1 billionth song so much, my gut says that when they finish their countdown, something will happen. Maybe they'll premiere the new iPod then? Or a 60gig revision of the current one? If nothing else, they have been buying up all those 60gg hds, right? At that point, it would be reasonable to have a promotion to clear out inventory of the old models while the new ones are in production...then again, it's more like Apple to have the promotion first, and then premiere the new models, like they just did with the displays.

No way, if you wait forever - you'll never get anywhere!!

You have a 10 day grace period for price reductions, but I have heard nothing, zip, zilch, zero about a price reduction. I don't think that would make sense right now either. The Powerbooks were somewhat recently updated and are selling well.

A price reduction has to take into account future costs too. If PB X sells for $1999, that PB X revB shouldn't sell for more. (A G5 PB should not raise the price; do not turn this into a G5 PB thread please!)

Price drops must be sustainable - and are therefore infrequent.

Combo deals with iPods and printers get some people to spend more than they might otherwise. I got my father to buy a Powerbook last year so that I could get a cheap iPod! :D

Just checked my university store's site, and then went in to check on the promotion. Seems to be a 300 dollar rebate for the 15gb ipod with any ibook or powerbook. Though it was a mistake to have it on the site so early they did tell me that was the deal. I also know that office pro is bundled with these computers but I think that offer is just what my school is doing.

But either way check-out http://pcpc.dal.ca/Laptops.html :)

The $300 rebate is a good deal, but your school is selling the 15GB for 369?! It should be 299 regular price, 269 edu discount. Basically, with that $300 rebate you should be getting the 15gb ipod for free. But it seems like your school's store will still make $70 on that...maybe it's a misprint.

Anyways, if this turns out to be the promo, it's not bad - free 15gb ipod with laptop purchase! I already have a 15gb ipod...what should I do with the new one I get, ebay it? Oh I know, I'll just give it to the next poster...

The reason that I am not waiting for my purchase, (might happen today! :D) is because Apple won't offer something for free. There will be a discount of some sort, sure, however, for a student on a budget it's just not practical for me to wait just to have to spend more money.

Go me and my ever so minor investigations (save for the date of course). Yes this is a Canadian university, but with a $69 ipod I am happy, which would lead me to believe it will be a 250 rebate in the states. They may want to compete with Dell on this one, that has the throw an ipod get money off deal. But this is all speculation.

But what I really want is a the rebate to apply to mini's and for the mini to come to Canada!! I want one soooooo bad. I am a runner and that would seem to be a better fit then the bigger ipod.

Some hard choices.

It would seem that with a expiration date of 9/25/2004 that there will be no updates of the iBook, PowerBook, and iPod lines till after that.

We have been thinking about adding a second Mac to the house. Been thinking about the PM G5 or maybe wait for iMac G5 (?). My other half would then get my PB 12" rev. B. This makes it tempting to look at another PB 12" (or maybe upping to the 15" or 17"). So hard being tempted by the speed freaks here about the power of the G5's :)

That's an excellent idea. 5 gigs is a little small for regular storage, but it'd be a great advancement for SneakerNet. No more using flash memory to transfer files between unnetworked computers...hmmm...

Well, I might sell it real cheap to a friend who's been lusting after it for years. Or just leave it on a shelf so one day I can tell my grandkids "D'ya see the iPod yonder? Go on kiddies, touch it, put your finger on the wheel." "Grandpa! It...it moves!" "Yes, dearies...back then we didn't have touch pads on our consumer electronics. And the buttons? They don't. Even. Glow." "Gasp."

BTW, Chip? Nice attention to details. I totally skimmed past the fine print where it says valid till 9/25, and what that portends for future product announcements.

I'm sure the speculation mill will start churning about the end date of this offer. Maybe iPod updates! While I may be strung up from my toes for saying this - the G4 may see one more revision in September.

Yes! This is what I have been waiting for to order my 12" PB. Does anyone know if this can be combined with the HP "great looking deal" printer promo? They both seem to require original UPC's cut from the boxes.

Nice job on predicting this one carletonmusic!

Can anyone answer this question? I would love to take advantage of both offers-a free printer and a $69 iPod-that's awesome!

Damn you, Carleton!;P (shakes fist in impotent rage) You're probably right--again--but my patience was used up waiting for the iPod promo...

I say you're probably right about there being a new G4 lineup in September, because I just placed a call to 1-800-MY-APPLE for a 1.5ghz 15" PB with 128vram, combo drive, 5400 rpm 80 gig hd, and backlit keyboard, with 512 megs of ram and a 15gig iPod, and they will have to update the product line post-haste to make what I ordered obsolete =). But that's fine. Let them introduce new stuff. I'm so happy...this laptop costs $700 less than my original TiBook did 36 months ago, and it will have 3x the speed, higher resolution, 120 megs more vram, 4x the hd space spinning 1200 more times a minute, and a cd burner. Meanwhile, 30 months after getting my iPod, I'm getting a replacement that's 3x as large, half the width, and costs $330 less. The edu store kicks ass!

I would call the Apple Store and see what they say. The offers were able to be coupled last year.

Thanks, I'll try that inless I see something about it on the board. If you remember from last year, how did you go about providing 2 UPC codes for each offer? They seem very insistent that there be no photocopies or anything. Maybe the two rebates can be sent in together, that's the only thing I can think of.

I might be missing something here, but why does the link on the apple.com edu homepage say "save up to $530 on an iPod and Apple laptop"? This is written in the text under Apple Promotions. Just curious.

p.s. thanks for the tip carletonmusic, I held off for a bit just in case you were right!!!

My theory, $200 on PB edu discount, $30 on iPod edu discount, $200 rebate. That gets to $430, the last $100 is the question, possibly the printer rebate? or the $100 iBook discount if you buy both?

you get 300 dollars off the pb 17'' with the edu discount, plus 30 dollars of the ipod with the edu discount, and finallly you get 200 dollars if you buy the pb and the ipod. i think that adds up right...

I was wondering why this isn't a new NEWS item on Macrumors!! Much of the readerbase is in the EDU market - why hasn't this story been posted yet??

Two rules that affect the purchase of a printer also:

This offer is not valid with the purchase of Apple education promotional bundles, used equipment, or refurbished equipment.

Apple education promotional bundle pricing, education institution pricing, and other education promotional offers supersede this offer. • This offer is not valid in conjunction with any other Apple promotion except as specifically permitted by the terms and conditions of such other offer or promotion.

So unless the rebate rules on the printer forbids it, you should be OK.

Well, I had mentioned earlier in the thread that I wasn't going to wait to purchase my computer based on Carleton's hints... So I didn't... I bought myself a new PowerBook *last night* and this promotion started today. Well, thankfullly the helpful folks at the Apple Store, at Mayfair will "modify" my reciept to make me eligible for this promo. Woo Hoo! a $70 iPod!

It seems there is a fair degree of flexibility at the physical Apple stores...I guess the people who ordered yesterday via the online store are out of luck! :(

Does anybody know if the iPod and PB deal is going to happen in Canada? I can't find any info on the Apple Canada site, and the coupon on the US site is of course only for US purchases. I'm kind of surprised: other than the long-awaited-never-quite-here iTunes, Apple Canada is usually in line with Apple US (except that we can't get Apple Refurbished online here - very irritating... )

For some reason, that makes sense... but I dont' know why.

I'm really looking forward to casing in on this promotion. I have to get up there within the 14-day "return period". Then, they will enter into the computer that I "returned" and unopened computer and that I bought a new one and an iPod on the same reciept. But I don't actually have to return my machine, or even bring it to the store. They were very concientious about it... as I was probably the last person to buy a computer from the store before they closed and the new Promo took effect.

I just got off the phone with apple.
They are not sure whether the deal will be available in Canada.
They said that last year's deal was not in fact available in Canada.
Sucks huh.

OTOH if the Dalhousie already has it in store it might be available through your bookstrore on a per university basis.

I just called Apple rebates (1-888-828-9059) to see if it is possible to get both the "Great Looking Deal" HP printer rebate and the "Cram and Jam" rebate and their answer was yes!

The woman I spoke to said that all you have to do is send in a photocopy of the UPC codes to one of the rebate addresses and the originals to the other. In the envelope with the photocopied UPC's be sure to include a note saying that the originals are in with the other rebate form. It sounded like they all end up in the same place eventually.

She also took my name when I called so maybe they keep track of this kind of thing. Hope this helps someone!

Excellent!! I would add that it might be helpful to make photocopies of the receipts showing both purchases - along with the note about the UPC code.

Hey... thanks for the tips that the iPod + PB is available in Canada! Now here's a more specific question... do I have to buy it from a reseller? I actually work at a university - does anybody know if I can go through my purchasing department (like buying any other office equipment) and still get this great deal, or do I have to go into my campus computer store and buy as if it was a normal personal purchase?

The best thing to do would be to call Apple. Better to be 100% sure than be $200 further down than you could be. ;)
