The new G4 line - when they will introduce it?

And will it have dual processors in all models?

Or maybe one single 933 Mhz, DP 1 Ghz, DP 1,2 Ghz?

And why is it called Jag-Wire - when this beatiful animal is called jaguar?

And what was steves telephone number exactly (in the adressbook) - i couldnt read it cause the mpeg 4 stream was too bad?

And why was this sony guy stealing up my time?

And why there were 5 bottles of water, if steve finished the keynote more then 4 of them left full?

And is this always the same jeans he wears over the past 4 years?

And why is this ichat icon a small guy running away?

And why all the guys in the auditorium have a beard?

And what was the Sushi restaurant they wanted to go after the keynote? Lets meet him....

the answer is H2O, Aqua - it's just there for show. If Steve had managed to make thorough use of that much water he would have had no time left to do anything else. A bit like 10.1.5 and a G4 really.

From what I've seen today, the next blue moon.... or never

Who knows? Just be glad when it comes out

Or maybe one single 933 Mhz, DP 1 Ghz, DP 1,2 Ghz?
refer to the second question

And why is it called Jag-Wire - when this beatiful animal is called jaguar?
It's called Jaguar but Steve pronounces it Jagwire...maybe he was smoking with that girl before the show

And what was steves telephone number exactly (in the adressbook) - i couldnt read it cause the mpeg 4 stream was too bad?
Believe me, if I had this, I would have been calling him up by now.....

And why was this sony guy stealing up my time?
...

And why there were 5 bottles of water, if steve finished the keynote more then 4 of them left full?
...Better to have more than not enough...would you like to see Steve as pissed off as I am

And is this always the same jeans he wears over the past 4 years?
...nah, can't be...hope not....

And why is this ichat icon a small guy running away?
It's to show all the Apple employees running away from the angry mob that just found out they have to pay for their .mac email

And why all the guys in the auditorium have a beard?
...no...I saw at least one guy that didn't have facial hair

And what was the Sushi restaurant they wanted to go after the keynote? Lets meet him....
Soho Sushi? Maybe

The Apple website refers to it as Jaguar in all the documentation I've seen.

There will be no new G4. This quote just in from Mr. Jobs himself:

"***** this PowerPC *****, we're going back to M68K."

Well I assume the you are talking about the pronunciation? There are many regions in the USA where people pronounce the word "jaguar" like "jagwire"
It is just a regional dialect. I am an American, and must admit that many times we butcher the Queens/Kings english pronunciations ;)
I grew up saying "jagwire" which I was tought in school. But I have since learned the correct way.

By the way "Jaguar" is the code name because it is a fast cat, and 10.2 is significantly faster than previous versions. Also "Cheetah" had already been used as a code name for an Apple product back in the days

Even if they have a PowerMac product introduction in August as rumored, I have to wonder if they would actually ship units before Jaguar comes out August 24. The only reason they would is to rope speed starved professionals for an extra $20 bucks for the upgrade a couple of weeks later. After .Mac and QuickTime 6 Pro, I wouldn't put it past them.

Shipping in the last week of August or so would give them another couple of weeks to sell off the old stock or perhaps let Moto get a few more chips ready so they don't have the huge backlogs they've had with previous rollouts. Hell, it could be a combination of both.

Frankly, I'm becoming more doubtful that if the line is updated it will be all that big a deal. Maybe we'll get a new motherboard and DDR RAM, but I'm beginning to think the speed bumps will be minor. They couldn't even bump the speed of the $2000 flagship iMac.

Kind of makes you wonder if they can even pull off something really competitive with the PC world by MWSF.

I thought the whole Jaguar vs Jag-wire was just a play on words... he knows how it is pronouced correctly, but he pronouces it that way because it signigantly speeds up the computer (ie wire) I thought it was just that sort of corny joke!?

Well, as a Londoner living in San Francisco, I have to argue a little bit.

The American pronounciation is always 'jag-whar', whereas the English prononciation is 'jag-you-are'. Jag-wire is a bastardization of either (or a side effect of a Deep South upbringing).

Regarding the new G4s, I'm hoping that we'll see the following trend from Apple: We have a press conference to update speeds and hardware features often, and as they become available (as opposed to waiting for a MW). Like the Xserve, iPod, Ti updates, etc.

We'll use MacWorld as a twice yearly venue to discuss our emerging software/device/display technology.

This would allow Apple to update speeds willy nilly, when they have the technology available to do so, and help alleviate the pre MW sales slumps. It would also put speedier chips in our machines more often, and without delay. Several times in the past, faster machines have been held from production for months, so they could be introduced at a MW.

This also helps schedule major OS revisions in the future. X.1 releases can be soft dated to MWs, and ship dates can follow closely.

Just a thought...

It seems that Apple is starting to spread out the introduction of hardware/software. In the past Macworld shows were blockbusters. Now in between shows will get special events of product introductions. In September Seybold show will bring some type of tower inprovements, or by Apple's new standards maybe a special event on their own in sometime in August.

does anyone think MWNY will actually lead to a pricedrop on the g4s currently available?

is the fact that it hasnt happened already an indication that it isn't going to? or is it possible it could still happen on friday.

Apple already has a Power Mac promo going on (buy one with a 17"+ Cinema Display and get $300-$500 back), and the rumored new Power Macs are expected to arrive a month from now, so I would say it doesn't seem likely, but there will almost certainly be a ton of reduced-price G4 towers in the "Specials" section of the Apple Store after the new ones arrive.

I think the current G4 tower prices are set to drop like a rock everywhere after the new ones come out, because they're currently selling for (in my opinion) a lot more than they're worth, and nobody is buying them.

thanks alex -- good to know.

i agree they are overpriced at 2999 for a 1ghz dual.

what do you think _is_ a reasonable selling price, and what do you think the price will drop to by end of august?

i'm wondering because with the work i'm doing right now, i can't really wait until the end of august to buy one - -which is frustrating. i've seen refurbs here and there on smalldog for around 2400, and now that MWNY doesnt seem to be unveiling anything thats going to lead to an immediate price drop, i'm wishing i had just bought the last one of those i saw. who knows how much longer it will take for small dog to offer that deal again.

It's hard to say what the current dual GHz Mac will be worth after the new ones come out, because nobody knows what the new lineup will look like or what they'll all cost. One thing is for sure though, the current dual GHz Mac is going to take a massive plunge in value the day the new Power Macs are released. If the very optimistic but unlikely rumors of dual 1.4s, dual 1.2s, and dual 1s at the current price points turn out to be true, then the current dual GHz will likely see its value ($3000) halved in a single day. ("Street" prices, not Apple Store prices) But if something more plausible like dual 1.2s, dual 1.0s, and a 933 or something happen all at the same price points as today's models, then the dual GHz might "only" lose $800 or so.

...Maybe you could lease for a month, and then buy? :)

Awesome idea. I think you just solved my problem.

now my next question is -- when you lease a mac, do you agree to ultimately pay the current price? and how _do_ you lease a mac?

THat old bag Sculley once implemented a similar system during his stay as head honcho of Apple. I think he once allowed a "take home" promotion, wherein people were allowed to take home a mac for free for 24 hours and if they liked it, they could buy it. Unfortunately, most of the macs were returned damaged, and some never got back at all.

Just a pointless anecdote:cool:

altho possible for prices to plunge, i'd not be surprised to see them hang up there. not too long ago was looking for dualie 450/533 and they were still pricey; started looking for single processor boxes and <i>they</i> were right up there also. prices on macs stick pretty well, if history is any indication of what's gonna happen next time 'round.

"tiger"? hmmm perhaps but they've been choosing more exotic names. "cheetah" or "leopard" if we've not had 'em; "lynx," "bobcat," "caracol," "serval" may be too small to insinuate the robustness of the OS.

the only place i found that leases macs is this place, and it doesnt actually seem like the best option. below are the details.

Gena, the answer to your first question is yes. You will be tied to the
price of the products at the time the lease begins, even if the price drops
the next day. The FMV is determined at the end of the lease term. The answer
to your second question is: a lease must be a minimum of 12 months, and
leasing is only available to businesses, not consumers. Please let me know
if you have any more questions.

Buying computers is always a nightmare, you choose your moment and step in, knowing that three weeks later there will be a new better faster model. I have just put off buying a new G4 untill after NY hoping for a processor upgrade. Looks like I will just have to get a dual 1GH with the Titaniun card. One thing I would like to see is a 19 inch flat screen, the 22 and 23 are way to expensive.

Steve called Puma "poo-mah" - in Britain will pronounce it "pewmer". I think "poo-mah" is a fairly common American pronounciation. "Jag-wire" is just weird - it's not as if Steve has a deep south accent. It must be some kind of joke.

do you not know how to use the shift/caps lock keys correctly or what?

you've spent more energy complaining about apple than it's worth for sure. why don't you do something more productive with that energy than complaining and whining and annoying people?

all of us also want new hardware and such. but you're one of a very few constantly complaining about it. if it's that big a deal, get a different computer. or at least get a new keyboard with functioning caps capabilities.

Hey people instead of coming up with our own variants on how to pronounce ‘Jaguar’ lets all get together and follow a common standard I mean look at Linux its in a bloody mess. Since the Brits invented English (plus since I’m one too) lets all stick with the way the good Queen of England pronounces it, ‘Jag-you-are’:D :D :D

What if Apple decided to change the name of the "Power Macintosh"? The iMac, eMac, and Xserve certainly are examples of new names, and seeing how Steve likes to do random things at random times, what if it was called the Xmac? Okay that was stupid, but it was just a thought. :p

SO, anyway, I heard that maybe Apple would kill the OS 9 support on the new mobos, and that would suck b/c OS 9 is still a staple of the Mac community. I know many people whose jobs depend on OS 9 for whatever reason (such as software, etc.), and it would suck if Apple axed the 9 support... I think, although it may not strand OS 9 like Apple wants to, it would still play to the strength of the new PM... I mean, why do more work to make a new machine less versatile? Unless this is something COMPLETELY new, which I doubt it is, since *hopefully* the new G4 will be out in August. Welpz, that's enough of my rambling... Have a nice day everyone!

maybe 10.3 will be named Garfield. That might make an impression, and they could steal microsofts paperclip man idea, but make it garfield and you could click on it for help..

but as for the g4 updates, I am guessing a late august update, and it will be a significant one. I would not be suprised by dual 1.4s but I also wouldnt be suprised by dual 1.2s :( - apple has been know to dissapoint...

my $.10 my $.02 is free, eminem sucks, but thats just me. That all ryhmed :D.
