View Full Version : Texting on the Iphone while driving

I’m about to purchase an Iphone, but am concerned that it won’t be as easy to text while driving as a standard phone. Currently I can bomb along the motorway at 80 or 90, one hand on the steering wheel the other tapping away, and it means I can constantly keep in touch with my friends even when getting from A to B. It’s the predictive text you see, makes it easy to text away without looking (much ;) ). If I buy an Iphone I’m worried that I’ll have to constantly look down at the keyboard, because you won’t be able to easily work out the spacings of the KWERTY board. This would obviously be very dangerous, and could lead to an accident. Even worse, I may even have to pull over to send a text , increasing my journey time, creating all kinds of hassle and ultimately putting a frustrated driver on the road. Again, very dangerous.
Therefore, I thought I’d ask people on here how they find texting on the Iphone while driving. Much the same as before, or a frustrating exercise?
Thanks,
Dixie

Is this a serious post!?!?! I cant believe you would be worried about texting and driving at the same time. Do you know how many people are killed or seriously injured by people playing with cell phones will driving? Particularly your mention of a freeway!?!
I really hope this is a joke.

Either this is a joke thread -and one that isn't very funny, or the OP is just waiting for the day when they cause a fatal accident, and have to deal with someone else's death being on their conscience for the rest of their lives.
Either way, this is a pretty sad thread :(

That’s all by the by, the point of this post is to ask for people, who have experience of both methods of texting while driving, to give some information on how much easier or harder it is to do it on the Iphone.

Guys, the OP is looking for answers, not a sermon. Obviously we are all very well aware of the dangers of texting while driving. There's no reason to get all "holier than thou" just because someone is looking for information. He's not going to reconsider his texting while driving just because a few people on a forum say "omg idiot it's dangerous, wtfff!" He'll just continue to look elsewhere for the answers.
OP: I found it difficult to get used to, but as long as you keep it to small messages you will not find it too difficult after about a week or so of practice. I moved over from a Sanyo M1, which was T9. I still would prefer my T9 method, just because I was able to text completely without taking my eyes off of the road. It would be nice if Apple would put in a standard T9 touch keypad option that you could use instead of the QWERTY keypad; just as an option.
Having said all that, you know the risks. Be safe, especially when you first get the phone and are getting used to it. Try it at a stop light or in a parking lot where the risk is minimal.
Edit: I would never text if I had kids in the car. Definitely do not recommend.

The first study of drivers texting inside their vehicles shows that the risk sharply exceeds previous estimates based on laboratory research — and far surpasses the dangers of other driving distractions.
The new study, which entailed outfitting the cabs of long-haul trucks with video cameras over 18 months, found that when the drivers texted, their collision risk was 23 times greater than when not texting.

So its okay to protect your own kids, but not someone elses? Other people on the road may have their own kids in the car who could be seriously injured or killed by someone not paying attention to the road, but instead their phone.
I for one, have been known to pick up my phone at a red traffic light to check something, but as soon as the light turns green, I put it back down and I would never dream of texting traveling 80-90mph on a highway! If someone needs to text that bad, then pull into a parking lot.
It has much less to do with being 'holier than thou' and more to do with making sure that I, as well as the rest of my family come home each night safe and sound instead of in a body bag because of some careless person who just HAD to stay in touch. Dont just think about your own kids, think about others as well!

Talking on the phone is bad enough, texting is just a death wish and usually its innocent bystander and not the driver that suffers.

If you are going to text and drive anyway, stick with what you already know. You must look at a virtual keyboard to type and there is no T9 type functionality on the iPhone.

OP, although I don't think it is a good idea to text and drive, I've done it with other phones that had a keyboard, so I could look where I'm driving and feel the keys. However, the iPhone, of course, doesn't have keys, so it is impossible to text w/o looking at the keyboard and to make matters worse use only one hand. Unless you're stopped at a light, I don't think you should do it. If texting is your main concern, I wouldn't buy an iPhone.

Give the phone to one of your kids. Tell them not to ever give it back to you.
I've seen so many people get into accidents while texting. I was rear-ended twice in the parking lot of my high school while the driver behind me was texting. Another kid I know drove through a fence into a telephone pole, and luckily is still alive. In my first three weeks of college, I've seen two accidents happen where people were texting. I saw another one two days ago where a car drove off the road onto the sidewalk because the driver was texting. Thank god no one was right in front of the car.
It's just irresponsible to even THINK that it's OK to text on the road. I'm 17, and I know that. You're obviously older, since you have kids, and you should be telling ME how to drive safely, not the other way around.
Wait until you're at a red light, put your car in park, and text away. Or just get off the road and park at McDonalds.
I honestly think that if you do something that puts some innocent person's life in a great amount of danger, such as texting while driving, you should be locked up for the rest of your life.

Would you echo similar requests if someone posted a question about drinking and driving? Of course not, same situation. Its not a behavior that should be tolerated, the reason - it kills people.

wow texting and driving with kids in the car. You should be ashamed of yourself. Is it really that important to respond immediately? I thought you were a 17 year old girl when I read this, but since you are clearly older you should know better. You are a danger to your children and a poor example.
As for your question. Texting on the iphone while driving is even more dangerous as you will need to look at the screen and can't find buttons by feel.

Any chance you can find out if texting on the iphone is banned in those states,
If so then i'll put sim card in my old Sony Ericsson..
Thanks in advance.

Huh? Federal offense would make it illegal in all 50 states...
Punished worse than drunk driving... I consider thats federal, you can do BIG time....
So now it’s becoming a discussion of my personal circumstances? I don’t see how my life and offspring have anything to do with it. What is this forum anyway? Seems to me to be many aloof members on here.
You are trying to TEXT while you drive. No one is dictating how to raise your family or live your life; however, in a matter of public well being, it is important that you do not text and drive.
As a matter of fact, for the security of your family in the road, don't do it.

Alright, you want it straight? I hate people who text while driving just as much as I hate drunk drivers. You are selfish. You would rather someone die then for you to not finish a conversation.
BTW, It gets personal when people do stupid things that can negatively effect other people. You made it personal long before this thread.

Thanks in advance. If it's banned, it would be across all phones, not just the iPhone. It's not like you would suddenly become a better drive & texter just because there are physical keys.
See my previous post re: most people suck at multitasking. Yes that includes driving & texting at the same time. And this is not a personal attack, but yes, you are most likely one of the people who sucks at it.

I'd actually bet that someone who drives after a few drinks is less dangerous and less impaired than someone who is texting while driving.
Simply put, if I had the choice to be a passenger in car driven by a drunk or driven by a texter, I'm choosing the drunk.

It's pretty clear the OP has created several accounts on MR and is having great fun annoying us all....
Can a mod please close this thread now. In the meantime the only thing we can do to get rid of this loser is to ignore him, so stop replying to this thread because all it's doing is encouraging him!

To the OP: I'm from Canada and had no problem texting whilest driving with the Iphone. Never had an accident until moving to the UK recently. I'm putting it down to you guys driving on the wrong side of the road, and having to text with my left hand rather than my right. The other thing Canadians will have to get used to while driving and texting is the lower limits. Brits have both lower speed and alcohol limits. And of course age of consent. So don't knock the country until you've tried it!

I'll give the OP a straight, non-hysterical answer.
Don't txt on an iPhone while driving. Period. It's not the easiest phone to txt accurately in normal conditions; I find it's even quite difficult to txt on it while walking. I wouldn't even dream of trying it driving. I was in the car while my boss tried to txt on his iPhone while driving, and the car was veering slightly every time he tried to type a few letters.
If you're driving slowly, on a wide road with no roadside obstacles and no other traffic, it's probably ok (though still likely illegal). Anywhere else, you're being reckless with your and others' safety.

It's a risk i'll have to take..just suppose I get a blinding joke en-route to Universal Studios..i'll wanna forward it to all my mates before they send it to me.:)

It's idiots like you who do my head in.
Either phoning or texting while driving is irresponsible and the reason I get so angry is because at the end of the day it could be my wife, mother, sister, or father in law you mow down as you try to send that message asking what's for dinner tonight. Lives utterly destroyed forever all because you thought you could text and keep control of a large hunk of metal travelling at speed.
Don't be so stupid and irresponsible. Put your phone down while driving, and if you need to text do so when it's for something urgent and make sure it's safe to pull over to send a text.
I can only hope that if you continue to be so arrogant and dismissive of this topic that when you do lose control of your car, and trust me it's a matter of WHEN and not IF, I can only hope you plough into a ditch, down a roadside hill, and injure yourself and not some poor innocent person who happened to be on the same stretch of road at the same time as you when you decided to text home to check if it's a pizza or a chinese for dinner.
Seriously, don't text and drive.

It's sad enough that we have OP trying to see if the iPhone is good for texting & driving.
It's even sadder to see others encouraging him/her to text while driving when doing so is a very dangerous thing to do.

Simply put, if I had the choice to be a passenger in car driven by a drunk or driven by a texter, I'm choosing the drunk.Completely agree. Drunk people have slowed reactions; in other words they actually have a chance of seeing what is going on. The texter has their attention on their phone and not on the road. No chance they will see the accident coming.

No, it's because you're an idiot who thinks they know better and can text while trying to control a vehicle.
Don't try and pass off such piss poor excuses, because there are none.

Listen, I’m a 19 year old male who take the safety of his kids seriously. I refute any allegation to the contrary.
Thats an idiotic statement if I ever heard one.
Ok since plain old common sense isn't getting to you, to make my point, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and believe that you have the hand-eye coordination of a ninja and can text safely while driving(still not saying its a good idea though!).
While you may have the skill to do so, have you ever thought that someone else, who may be doing the exact same thing or worse, does not?
What if in that brief moment you look down to tap out those texts while crossing an intersection, another driver doing the exact same thing accidentally runs the light?
How well do you think you'll avoid that other driver with one hand on the wheel and one on your phone?
When you drive, you gotta be aware of other people too!
EDIT: whoops, people beat me to the point!

It doesn't (i never said it was an iPhone) ... just gives you an overall picture of what texting while driving can result in.

Listen sonny, I'm 68 and have been driving all over North America all my life. I'm not encouraging him, I'm letting him know that it's more difficult to text while driving on the wrong side of the road.
Anyway, to the OP. If you're 19, then how long have you had your license for? I mean, thats going to be a factor if you ever have an accident, rather than texting, or drinking.

Listen, I’m a 19 year old male who take the safety of his kids seriously. I refute any allegation to the contrary.
You can't take the safety of anyone seriously if you think texting while driving is safe ... period. God forbid you text with your kids in the back seat of your car. I mean, can you even begin to imagine the pain your partner will go through when she gets that knock on the door at 2am from the police, telling her that her partner and children are gone, ie: dead.
I'm not being over dramatic here, I'm dealing in facts. My Uncle is a traffic officer in the UK, and some of the scenes he describes are horrific and he's gone to many a door to tell relatives that their loved ones died because of phone use while driving ... and it's even more sinister for the person left behind if the text got sent before impact, leaving that last ever action of yours, which ultimately caused your demise, in physical form as a reminder.
It's not rocket science, if you need to text pull the car over. And even then, do it if it's an emergency.

With outmost respect on my part.
Having 68 years doesn't excuse you from texting and driving as it is equally dangerous. Sure you have never had an accident yet, but still, that's no excuse for giving a post that encourages to such behavior. In the end, your overall post does encourage OP.
I'm sure you may be set in your ways, but this thread is to make OP understand texting while driving is the worst mistake he can ever make on the road way where ever he/she is.

I guess as a scooter rider I have a special perspective on you four-wheelers. Car drivers use their cars as mobile living rooms, clubs, dressing rooms and dining rooms and rarely stop to think that they're in control of a fast-moving hunk of metal.
When you're on a scooter you have nothing else to do except be alert and concentrate on riding.

I've never crashed yet. I've got 4 kids and wouldn't harm a hair on their head so obviously wouldn't text if it was a risk to them.
What an over-reaction.
"I've never crashed yet."
Then your obviously exempt from car crashes.
"I've got 4 kids and wouldn't harm a hair on their head so obviously wouldn't text if it was a risk to them."
If what you are saying is you don't text while driving with them in the car, then your not as stupid as some people are saying so on this thread. However, driving is one of the most dangerous forms of transport so texting while doing so is putting YOU, your PASSENGERS and other ROAD USERS at an unnecessary risk.

I'm come around to the thinking the OP is being extremely responsible for someone so young. He's (I'm assuming it's a he, I mean there's no way a woman would be able to drive and text), so he's asking if it's hazardous texting while driving with the Iphone. All these other guys thought they could do it, and crashed, probably should have done some reaseach like the OP in the first instance.
