Hi,

I was reading this thread where this guy by some unfortunate series of events managed to let his laptop get rained on, and then his backlight stopped working, and a whole bunch of other silly things... Anyways, I had somewhat of a similar experience, what happened to me is I was in the bathroom with my laptop, getting ready for a bath, and I dropped the laptop into the bath by mistake in my hasty preparations.

Anyways, something is not working in the laptop, and it makes weird noises now when I turn it on (I took out the battery, hard drive, and everything else I could and left it to dry for around a week). I was reading up that you can open up the laptop and take out the strips that say the laptop has been wet. I was speaking to a friend of mine who is an apple person and he said that what I should do is probably set my laptop on fire by placing a firecracker where the battery is supposed to be and then break the battery up into little pieces and set those pieces alight too. then I should take it to the apple store and told them that my laptop exploded and they will give me a new one for free.

Can I try this? What are you thoughts?

Sure -- but remember, video or it didn't happen. :D

That applies to both the firecracker AND filming the look on the Apple Store employee's face when he/she sees the blown up laptop. Then, after Apple decline to repair or replace at their expense, you can then sell the videos and make enough money to buy a new laptop. Ta-da, problem solved! ;)

P.S. Save up some of your profits from selling the videos for the hospital bills incurred during filming. :D

Pics or it didnt happen. Surely no ones careless enough to sit a computer next to a bath.

Jokes aside, be happy you weren't in the bathtub when the laptop fell into it

Remember that teen who wanted to twitter out of the bathtub and she got electrocuted when her laptop fell into it.

People, never take computers or other electronics connected to AC plugs with you into the bathtub.

As you alluded to, you can get hurt if plugged in and your GFI is not working but I wonder what would happen since it's not really the AC in the water...

As long as you and your laptop share a stupid tup together and it's not plugged in, you're safe. Laptop, not so much.:p

Is this the same laptop that got beer spilled on it and you dropped into the lake through the dock? Or a new/different one? Either way, you sure got bum luck when it comes to computers.

Sounds like a solid plan. Except don't break up the battery into little pieces, and don't breathe the toxic fumes from the inevitable battery explosion.

Part it out. Every piece of the laptop has value. Take $ from sales and buy new. Or buy a brain. Who uses a laptop right next to their bath. You're asking for it.

i was lookin for somewhere to post this, and this seems like a good place. I was usin my new macbook (i bought it two days ago) at the dock by my cottage, and my friend who was drunk spilt beer all over the keyboard. I got angry and stood up and droped it, and it fell between the cracks of the dock board.

I read that you can find the water indicators and remove them? Is this true? Can i do this and apple will replace my laptop?

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

I think if you just jumper the contacts on the battery and reinstall it, you can forgo the firecracker. It'll pretty much do what you're trying to accomplish.

If he is going to attempt the firecracker treatment, why not go the whole way and duct tape some high explosives to it?

that's how we fixed the Macs back in my day :p

Uh no, that's fraud.

But it cannot be fraud. If my battery legitimate blew up, apple would be forced to give me a new laptop right? There can't be a law that says "if our stuff blows up in your face, it's not our problem"..

So how is it fraud if they would be giving me a new laptop if it blew up in my face anyway?

Thank you everyone else who gave their positive responses.

It's fraud because it's not a defect in the laptop. It's damaged caused by you, the user, and lying and claiming it blew up on its own is fraud. The AppleCare warranty does not cover accidental damage, therefore, it's fraud. Simple as that.

And yes, if a laptop blows up in your face because you strapped some firecrackers to it, the manufacturer can say it's not their problem, because it's not. It's your problem.

What are you thoughts?

Go for it, but only if the Genius on shift is named Wile E. Coyote.

And next time, keep the pr0n out of the bathroom. ;)

If you try this then I will have less faith in the intelligence of mankind and no faith in yours... This sounds like a bad/potentially dangerous/stupid idea... Sorry for your misfortune!
