Why doesn't Apple sell iPhones at the Apple Store?

When I went to NYC, i stopped at at cell phone accessory vendor on the street. I asked where the Apple Store was because I wanted to buy an iphone. He said they dont sell them there, and I would need to mail in the order. So I gave him the cash and he said he would mail it to me once he received it.

Perhaps the OP is confused in that apple authorized dealers (non-apple stores) don't sell iPhones but apple stores themselves do. The same goes with ATT stores, just pop buy your local ATT store and you can pick one up.
