I would like to purchase a laptop for a newborn. Ideally, the laptop would be surgically inserted into the womb, so that the child could begin learning OSX from the earliest human developmental stages. The child would be born along with the laptop, so of course it needs to be a thin / light laptop to avoid physical trauma to the mother. Long battery life is also important (for obvious reasons). The laptop should not be fragile, and it should be durable enough to last until the child is at least 1 month old, at which point we plan to replace it with a Macbook Pro.

I think it's a great idea. Too bad the tablet isn't out yet, it would be perfect

Uhhh... these small people can get really rough. You might wanna buy a Panasonic Tough Book.
OS X should be possible on that books.

Not much better in this age range..iPhone, for sure. Look into a good text-before-talking program in your area, too.

I'd say a Macbook Air.
It's fairly light (when you're only ~10 lbs. it really matters), and the lack of USB ports won't be holding her back since he/she doesn't have the manual dexterity to use even one port. I'd get the SSD for the shock resistence and speed (zero attention span at that age) and some kind of "skin" for the drool.
