I am considering ordering a BTO Powerbook from Apple.com and (of course) am quite eager to get it. I was wondering how long on average delivery took for other Mac users that have done BTO?

Order:

• 1.33GHz PowerPC G4 with 64MB Graphics Memory
• 256MB DDR333 SDRAM - 1 SO-DIMM
• 80GB Ultra ATA drive @ 5400 rpm - BTO
• Combo Drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
• Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
• AirPort Extreme Card
• iPod w/Click Wheel (20GB) - [i]Cram & Jam[i]
• 15.2-inch TFT Display

All this would be delivered to the Metro Detroit Area...

When I ordered my rev b 12" powerbook BTO here is what happened.

I added an extra 256 MB and ae card. Shipped the very next business day and got it 3 days later(via fedex).

Assuming the parts are in stock, Apple delivers orders very quickly. Now if you were ordering a dual 2.5 G5, that would be a completely different story...

That's great news! Did you have to pay any extra shipping costs?

I doubt he did. Apple's free shipping is very fast, and sometimes they upgrade it to even faster shipping at no charge.

I fedexed it so it cost me $12 more. In my view well worth it.

Sorry, my mistake. I didn't upgrade my shipping and it didn't take more than 3 days for me to get my powerbook, so I just assumed the same was true in your case.

Ordered mine on July 9th. BTO 1.5 GHz 15" PB. Upgraded to the 5400 rpm harddrive, 128 MB vram, 1 512 MB ram stick, and Final Cut Express pre-installed. I also got a 40 GB iPod through Cram & Jam. I had it all shipped at once to avoid getting any of it before a mid-term exam. It all shipped on July 20th. I had upgraded to 2nd day shipping on Monday of that week. I picked everything up at Fed Ex on thursday the 22nd. I think part of what held it up was low stock on the 40 GB iPods and the introduction of the 4 G iPods. It was all worth the wait though....:)

Did they send you a 4G one or a 3G one? Man, If it was a 3G one I would be annoyed! :D

I heared some bad things about the 4G... a lot of complaints since the Mini was released... so I'm very pleased I have my 3G... a pity I have the 30GB since the 40GB was released 2weeks later :-S

when I ordered my G5 I didn't go trough apple.com since my brothers revA 12"Pb took a long time and he only added more ram at the time... I ordered it at a friends company... took me less than 2 weeks to get it with airport extreme + 1GB extra ram (but I had to install it myself since they shipped parts not BTO) and the G5 had the same price as apple sells it but the AE & Ram was much cheaper ;-)

so I think if you don't buy stuff that is high in demand or just newly released apple.com can work fast ;-)

'tis a 4G one. I probably would have ended up with a 3G if I had things shipped when they were available. By holding off I avoided too many new toys distracting me from my mid-term and I got the newer iPod.

BTW the 4 G iPod has worked perfectly for me, not a single complaint.

You can order a BTO system through a local Apple retail store as well right? Has anyone tried that and found that they received their stuff quicker than waiting for it to ship to their home? (I figure bulk shipments to the retail stores) On the other hand, do you avoid paying state sales tax by ordering through Apple.com as opposed to the store?

my dad does this a lot at his work:

if your work place allows you to have items shipped their DO IT. They will come in usually much faster because it is a buisness and not a residential place. This is what i am probly going to do with my g4 tower whenever it gets ordered.

here's how things worked out for me when i ordered my bto powerbook from the german apple store: ordered on july 20th, shipped on 27th july (which was actually within the initially predicted time frame), then a loooong wait until delivery on august 9th. i am told that kuehne & nagel, a german logistics company almost traditionally has a very bad performance on carrying goods from taiwan to germany. by comparison, transport of bto goods from taiwan to the us takes only a fraction of the above.

having eventually received my pb i can only say that it was well worth the long wait...

I ordered my PowerBook on Wednesday 4th August @1PM, by 3AM the next day the Powerbook had shipped. It arrived 11:30 this Thursday morning (12th). I even had a phone call from TNT 15 minutes before hand to see if I would be in (I had to have a day off this week and I chose today- fluke or what :D ).

Thats not bad in my book (excuse the pun  ) coming from the other side of the planet. I never expected the PowerBook to be built in less than 24 hours. However, when I placed the order the (very friendly) sales lady listened to the CTO options I requested and gave me the price immediately, I guess that most 1.5Ghz Powerbook users ask for 5200RPM disk, 128MB VRAM and 1x 512MB DIMM.

Finally, I am very happy with my new arrival and expect to get many hours of use from it!

I ordered a refurb PowerBook from the Special Deals section of the Apple Store, and after I placed my order was informed that it could be 1-2 months before the product even shipped, and then that it would ship by ground for many days.

My PowerBook showed up about three days later. Go figure.

I've noticed a lot of people are experiencing long delays after ordering their products. So my question is, when ordering from apple.com, when do they actually charge your card? I hope its after they ship the product off!

...when do they actually charge your card?
I ordered Tuesday morning at 8:00am PT and was charged a couple of hours later. My printer shipped the same day and arrived yesterday. My PowerBook and iPod shipped separately on Wednesday and will both be here on Monday (after the longest weekend ever). I paid for the quicker shipping.

Where do the powerbooks ship from?

Mine is shipping with an iPod from Shanghai.

[UPDATE]
My order is finally shipping after a harrowing weekend of negotiations between my credit card (Bank One) and Apple.com. Apparently, Bank One, in good faith, saw a large charge come through and flagged it for review. Now it's nice to have good security on your credit card, but it's also nice to be able to use the *@%# thing! I had to spend 2 hours on the phone calling Apple, having them try the transaction again, having it not work, calling Bank One. finding out why etc... In the end it took a 3-way conference call between myself, Apple.com and Bank One to resolve the issue. I don't carry any debt on the card and have excellent credit, it's just the new policies of trying to protect against identity theft etc.

Piece of advice - If any of you are planning on purchasing a system from Apple.com with a credit card call the credit card company and have them note your account. It will save you a lot of hassle and a delayed order. I found out a bit too late, :( but count myself lucky because the woman I was speaking to at Apple.com said that sometimes when there is a payment issue the order will be put on hold for 5-6 days. Don't let this happen to you!!

Ordered through work. Order processed July 23, estimated ship Aug 3, delayed, estimated ship Aug 10, delayed, estimated ship Aug 17. Called Apple to find out what was going on... don't know. And then it turns out the wrong configuration was ordered - good thing I called or else I would have waited another 2 weeks for the wrong thing. Order cancelled. Have not bothered to place another order.

Good luck.

How did you know about this situation? Did Bank One call you? I guess it is good to know (at least) that your credit card company looks out for their customers. Identity theft is a bi#%h!!! I know...American Express called me once when I went outta town for a two days. They noticed that I had two gas charges in two days. Apparently this is one way how credit card thieves tell if a card is still good.

Actually, Apple called me to say that I should contact my bank. From what I gathered, this isn't an entirely unusual occurence these days...

Update:

Ok...my iPod arrived today. I ordered an 4G 20GB iPod and docking station on Aug 14th. The docking station shipped on Aug 16th outta Pennsylvania in the morning. The iPod shipped outta Shanghai late the same day. I got my docking station on the 18th and the iPod arrived on the 19th (@10:30AM). So the delivery was not too bad. Hopefully, it'll be just as good when I order my PB.

I'm curious to see what part of the world it will be in next. And I ordered this with 2-3 day shipping and was promised the ibook would arrive before Monday, "most likely on Friday".

The iPod is still hangin' out in Shanghai, China. I don't expect to receive that for another week or so.

But if the iBook doesn't arrive either today (fat chance) or Saturday (does FedEx Express deliver on Saturdays?) then I'm going to call and request my additional $15 back, or at least insist on getting a credit.

We'll see what happens I guess...

I have a personalized iPod mini on the way for my sister, that's taking about 28 days.

iSight accessory kit is taking about 2 months (god knows why).

My G5 took so long I had to cancel, with two delays adding up to one and a half months (each delay was about 3 weeks, which, among other things, leads me to believe they knew about the 2nd delay).

Usually if they have stock on your PB, it should take only 3 - 5 days to process the shipping.
In this case, if the estimated shipping date is sept 14, my guess is that they might be running out of stock on the PB you've ordered.

Anyway, try calling them on Tuesday and they should be able to confirm the availability for you.

My order took exactly 1 week:
- BTO 15" PB
- iPod 20GB
- Wireless mouse
- APP Kit

Though the APP kit was the first item to get shipped out, it took the longest time to delievered. APP was shipped by a courier company called Same Day Right Away, whereas other items were shipped by FedEx.

I ordered my BTO Dual 2.0 on the 1st. It said 5-7 days to ship. The orderstatus then said it'll ship on or before the 13th :(
I ordered the production suite at the same time and that was scheduled to ship on the 3rd. Late in the day on the third I got a call from Visa asking me if the purchase was valid (I've had this before when buying online, they are just confirming things are valid and ok. I told them all was good and assumed the charge had gone through). I checked the orderstatus page right away to get a tracking # and see that it says the charge was denied. Confused I called Visa back and they said it wasn't 'denied' but had a different status code and that if there was an operator doing the charge on the other end they would have been instructed to call and confirm due to the size of the order. I called Apple and talked to their 'payments' department, she immediately re-tried the charge and it was all good. Oh, I told Visa to allow all charges by Apple in the next couple of weeks because who knows when the system will ship (I'm a switcher and am having a hard time waiting... I'm used to going to the store and buying the machine when I'm ready). If I had known they wouldn't charge the card until it shipped I would have ordered weeks ago instead of waiting until I moved some $$'s around to make room for the single purchase

Oh, and so the production suite did ship on the 4th (Saturday from Sacremento), made it to Memphis on Sunday morning and Toronto (Missasuaga for those that know) that evening. It sat there until this morning where it was flagged "Regulatory Agency Clearance Delay", then 2 hours later it was "Released for Delivery" but I never got it today and when I checked this evening it was set to the regulatory delay again around 12:30. What does customs have problems with the software? Ugh.

And since I'm rambling, I'll mentioned the couple of other accessories I ordered (blank DVD-R's and Myst game) shipped today, but they sent those purolator (did I mention the above was FedEx) - and purolator's site doesn't work with firefox to track so I'm just not going to bother on that.

At least this way the system will probably arrive well after FilmFest so I don't have to worry about missing my new toy while I'm out at all the movies.

All new for a switcher learning the ropes. If only the local reseller had returned my email about getting them to build the system for me... oh well, this way I get the ADC discount (maybe that's why the extra delay...?)

I'm not going to lie, only read some of these posts, but the normal shipment takes about 7 days. Well shipment isn't going to be so nice.

I ordered an 20gb ipod with free shipping. I figured it would take a while to ship, but apple got it to fedex in 2 days. I was so excited. But...fedex has the estimated delivery date 18 days after they received it!!! I guess I should have paid for a faster delivery--18 days is ridiculous.

Ordered a BTO G5 iMac on 9/1/04.
Shipped today.
Not supposed to arrive until 10/13/04 according to FedEx:( That's 19 days too many:)
This is the first time I've ordered a BTO product from Apple and it seems that it is going to take a long time to get it now that it's been shipped. Every other item I've ever ordered has been at my house within 5 days of it shipping.

Bought a 12"pb BTO (only upgraded the harddrive to 80GB and bought the combo drive instead of the superdrive) on Monday July 28 at about 8:00 pm. On Wednesday night my order was ready to go for shipping, but I used my debit card which has a $500 limit. Went to the bank the next morning, explained that i was buying a laptop and needed the limit raised so that I could finish the transaction. After I got home, the bank called about 1 hour later to tell me the limit had been reset to $1800 for that day only. Next, I called Apple and told them that the card should go through. The representative checked my order and retried the transaction. The transaction went through and my laptop was shipped that night.

If it wasn't for the 4th of July weekend I would have gotten my laptop on Monday, but I had to spend another day of agonizing wait. It finally arrived on Tuesday.

Total time from purchase to receiving my laptop was 8 days (thats including the weekend and holiday Monday). Oh, and I did pay the $15 for the express shipping.

Another interesting note: when I was checking the status of my package (which I did every hour), Fed-Ex said the package was shipped from Memphis, Tennessee. It never said anything about coming from Asia.

Way back on January 27, 2004, I placed an order for an iMac G4 (see my web site for the specs). It arrived on February 6, 2004. Unfortunately, it froze/kernel panic'd on me repeatedly when I started it up - that was fixed when I brought it into my local Apple Store, where the folks at the Genius Bar reset my iMac's PMU (Power Management Unit) - it's been crash-free ever since.

Is it a completely different story if you're in Australia?

I ordered a BTO iBook + airport base station on Saturday, September 18 and it's due to arrive before or on Wednesday, 29 September. That's 11 days compared to your responses of ~3-5 days....

If I'm in Australia, where am I getting my iBook + airport base station from?? According to the Apple website (Australian) my order status is still "open". Hopefully they're not going to delay it...
